Extended Summary

Dean is surprised but pleased by Karen’s presence in town. She refers to being in the loony bin, making Dean uncomfortable since he put her there. He says she looks good and she replies he looks like hell. Dean notes it would take time to tell her everything and Karen says she has all day. Dean suggests they eat first. Karen wants fish and chips to go and tells Willow, who is at the bar, that Dean’s getting them food. Dean, bewildered, asks when they became besties. Karen says Willow signed her out so is babysitting her. Later, the three of them drive into a park area. Karen reminisces about the chip shop near where they used to live, before asking Dean what Colby’s got him into. Willow gives them space and Dean asks Karen if Willow mentioned being shot. Karen says she just told her Ross came back and Dean and Colby got involved with something. Dean says Ross shot Willow, he and Colby went after him and Colby lost it.

Ben makes his way to Maggie’s office with lunch and hears her on the phone to the department, angrily saying that she has two students in need and was told it was just a question of doing the extra paperwork. After finishing the call, she tells Ben that she’s worried Bella will drop out of school and Raffy’s struggling: They need help now. Later, Ben runs into Ziggy on the beach. Ziggy says she just heard from Coco. Ben notes Maggie could do with a call from her after the day she’s had. He asks about Ziggy and Brody. Ziggy says things are better now Simone isn’t working at Salt.

Brody is pleased to see Simone when she turns up at Salt. She notes she can go there for lunch now she’s not working there. As they’re flirting at the bar, Justin comes in and bluntly notes he thought Simone had quit. Brody says she’s a customer and Justin asks if he treats all his customers like that. Simone leaves and Justin realises the affair is still going on. Later, Simone is on the pier, chatting on the phone to Brody, who is in the store room. She doesn’t fancy running into his family again but is disappointed that Brody can only offer a meeting at her caravan after work. Justin, at the bar, loudly greets Ziggy and Brody quickly hangs up. Ziggy suggests they go to a movie. Brody isn’t sure, saying he has things to sort. Ziggy says she’ll stick around, since Justin owes her a beer for closing up.

Karen is frustrated at Colby’s idiocy, saying Dean’s still on probation and could go to jail. She asks what they did with the body. Dean won’t tell her but says they covered their tracks and the police think Ross did a runner and aren’t looking at them. Karen tells him not to be sorry about Ross. Dean says he keep seeing what happened. As they go for a walk, Karen says this is nothing like her. Dean doesn’t know how she coped and Karen points out she didn’t. She wants Dean to get some rest. Willow appears with coffees but Karen knocks Dean’s out of his hand, saying it’s stopping him from sleeping. Dean says he doesn’t want to sleep because of the nightmares. He says Karen used to party for days and Karen tells him to look where it got her.

Ben and Maggie go to the Diner. Maggie says she can only think of one solution to the problem: She’ll have to take on the learning support job herself, which would mean doing her admin work at night and giving up her classes. They both know it’s not ideal. Ben goes to see Colby about flat renovations. Simone, who has been listening in, sits with Maggie and says she might have a solution. Meanwhile, Dean and Karen are by a lake. Karen says there have been times Dean has needed to be straight with her. She says her treatment’s been a hard struggle but it’s let her have her first clear-headed conversation with him. She advises him to see a doctor. Dean isn’t sure about telling them everything. Karen didn’t mean that: The doctors can give him pills to help him sleep and he can talk to her or Willow. Willow appears, saying she and Karen need to get back. Dean says he’ll make his own way.

Ziggy chats to Justin about the date and checks with Brody that they’re definitely going. Brody says he’ll meet her after sorting out some things. Justin realises that means Simone. At the Diner, Simone is showing Maggie her CV. Maggie is surprised she wants to go back to teaching, since she was planning to become a chef. Simone says she’s waiting for a job to come up. She gets a text from Brody saying they need to talk, which she hides from Maggie. Maggie explains about the funding problem. Simone is happy to work voluntarily until the funding comes through.

Dean waits on a darkened road as a car pulls up. An acquaintance, Mutt, sells him a bag of pills. Dean checks if they’re the same as from a chemist. Mutt says they’re as good as and two will knock him out. Dean asks for a lift back to town. He goes to his van and lies down on the bed, immediately falling asleep.

Simone leaves the table as Ben returns. Maggie tells him about Simone’s offer, but still has to check her credentials. Ben thinks Maggie should snap her up. Maggie stops Simone as she’s leaving and tells her she can start on Monday if everything checks out. After Simone has gone, Ben wonders how Ziggy will feel. He heads to Salt and finds Ziggy there all dressed up; she turned up early and found Brody had ducked out. Ben tells her about Maggie hiring Simone. Ziggy isn’t too happy, since it gives Simone a reason to stay in town, but reluctantly accepts it for Maggie’s sake.

Brody and Simone meet up on the beach. Simone notes it’s a nice change from the caravan. Brody admits he has to cancel. Simone is in too good a mood to mind, telling him she has a job. Brody is pleased until he hears it’s at the school. Simone says she needs something to stop her getting bored and explain why she’s in town. She isn’t happy to realise Brody cancelled on her to see Ziggy, saying she’s made all the sacrifices, including giving up her dream job, and she thought he’d have made his mind up by now. She says to call her when he’s made a decision.
