Extended Summary

Tori comes home to find Raffy lying on the sofa. Raffy heads off to bed after telling her that Brody’s gone again and Mason will be leaving soon as well. Tori heads out the back where Justin is sitting and calmly asks him what he did. Next morning, Tori finds Mason looking for rooms to let outside the surf club. She tries to talk him out of leaving, saying they shouldn’t turn on each other. Mason is reluctant to back down, even when Tori says it would be another person walking out on Raffy.

Inside, Alf watches as John sets up for the fun day. John checks Alf will be there but Alf says he has to take Roo to the city: It’s implied that she’s checked herself out of hospital already. Marilyn comes in and is surprised to see John helping out. John mumbles an excuse, saying he’s just moving stuff. Alf rolls his eyes. Back at the caravan park house, Alf tells Leah he thinks John’s underestimating Marilyn and should be straight with her. Leah argues that he’s worried about her getting the wrong idea. Zac turns up and, after a few awkward greetings, asks for his mail. Alf gets it for him, including a postcard from Evelyn. Alf and Zac chat in a friendly manner but Leah bluntly asks if he’s got what he came for and Zac leaves. Alf makes a quip about how cold it is.

At the Diner, Marilyn asks Hunter and Olivia if they’re going to the fun day and they tell her they have a study date instead. They are somewhat bemused that she thinks Nate is organising it, telling her he’s gone away. They bump into Zac, who tells Hunter about the postcard. He suggests Hunter visit Evelyn some time, even offering to pay for the trip, and Hunter awkwardly fumbles excuses. Back at the beach house, Olivia tells Hunter he needs to learn to cover better. She suggests that he tell Zac and that it wouldn’t change anything but Hunter is worried he’ll lose him if he does that.

Tori brings Mason home to talk to Justin, but despite her efforts to placate them it soon turns into a full-scale row, with Mason blaming Justin for driving Brody away and Justin insisting he was trying to do the best for everyone. Tori interrupts after finding the card and tells them it’s Raffy’s fourteenth birthday. They all beat themselves up for not knowing. Raffy comes home for her lunch and they ask her why she didn’t tell them. When Mason makes a dig at Justin, Raffy says it proves her point: She’d rather have no birthday than a birthday where everyone hates each other. After she’s gone, Justin silently starts baking and Tori and Mason join in.

Outside the surf club, Heather, the local woman who was making comments about John when his arson first became common knowledge, is berating him for organising a fundraiser for a burns unit, dubbing it insensitive. Marilyn approaches and is somewhat bewildered when Heather says John’s behind it. Heather says her family won’t have any part of it. John and Marilyn head inside and John admits it was VJ’s idea, stressing he just wanted to help people. Marilyn believes him. John is thinking of cancelling but Marilyn tells him to see it through and that she’ll help him.

Hunter turns up at the caravan park house looking for VJ. Leah is finishing off muffins for the fun day but Hunter is awkward around her and quickly leaves the room. Zac turns up: He has a letter from his lawyer suggesting they arrange a meeting. Leah is more concerned with the muffins and they quickly realise they’ve both bought tickets for the fun day. Zac tells Leah it doesn’t have to be this way but Leah says there’s nothing more to say. Hunter listens in from the hallway.

Meanwhile, Justin, Tori and Mason put the finishing touches on the cake. Justin apologises again and this time Mason is more accepting, saying he won’t move out. Raffy comes home and they all shout “Surprise!” Raffy isn’t keen to join in, saying things will just go back to being bad afterwards. Tori and Mason try to claim otherwise but Justin agrees that eating the cake won’t fix anything or bring Brody back, but she still shouldn’t be alone on her birthday.

Leah drops the muffins off at the surf club and Marilyn slaps John’s hand away when he tries to take one. She tells them she isn’t staying after all; John senses it’s women’s business and makes himself scarce. Leah tells Marilyn that she doesn’t feel up to it with everything that’s happening with Zac. John is despondent that only a few people have turned up. Marilyn suggests that the others are fashionably late. Meanwhile, Hunter finds Zac sitting on his own at the Diner and wonders why he isn’t at the fun day. Zac admits he’s avoiding Leah. Hunter suggests they have dinner later.

Tori, Mason and Raffy make polite noises while tasting the cake but when Justin tries it he admits it’s awful. The others thank him for trying and Mason and Raffy rush to get ice cream from the fridge. Justin apologises to Tori for how he handled things with Brody. Tori says they’re in new territory: Now they’re out of witness protection, they will go their separate ways and Brody is just the first. Justin decides to give the others some space by going to see Ava.

Meanwhile, Hunter and Zac are having dinner at the Diner and Hunter helps himself to something from Zac’s plate that he never eats. Zac’s phone rings and he has a brief conversation. He tells Hunter it was Terry from the Department: He’s been offered a position in Hunter’s home town, Robertson. He attempts to sell the move to Hunter: He’ll see his old friends and his grandma and can still go to uni. Hunter doesn’t seem sure but agrees to think about it.

The few people that came to the fun day leave and John expresses his frustration that only seven people came. Marilyn points out he sold tickets so the burns unit will still get the money but John sees it as a personal humiliation and that his attempt to prove himself failed. Marilyn is angry, saying it’s not about him, and walks out. Later, John is cleaning up on his own and tries a Test Your Strength machine. Jett comes in and says John can do better than that. They smile at each other and Jett says “Hi, Dad.”
