Extended Summary
Justin and Phoebe are debating what to watch on TV in a light-hearted manner. Phoebe manages to get hold of the remote and change the channel but they get more frisky, eventually kissing passionately just before Tori comes home. She tells them that Nate casually said he loves her before disappearing into her room, leaving them dumbfounded. Back at Salt, Nate tries to compose a message to Tori on his phone but gives up.
Olivia meets two friends at the Diner for what she thinks is a study session but one of them, Jess, makes it clear they’re not going to worry about their assignment until just before it’s due, saying they finished studying with school. On cue, Hunter turns up in his school uniform and Olivia makes an awkward attempt to explain and introduce everyone, not helping by noting Hunter’s repeating Year 12. Jess invites him to join them but he says he has to study. Later, Olivia declines to go on with the others, joining Hunter at a nearby table and saying he should have joined them and she wants him to meet her new friends. Hunter wonders when they’re going to see each other. Olivia suggests tomorrow morning but Hunter has school; he suggests the afternoon but she has a tutorial. She suggests coffee now but he has an assignment to do. Olivia eventually insists on lunch tomorrow, despite the lack of time.
Evelyn and Matt are searching for Ellie near the surf club; Matt says he even checked the gym to see if she was cry boxing, a concept that seems to leave Evelyn more bemused the more he tries to explain it. They see Raffy and ask her to call Ellie. She does and learns she’s at home, scornfully chiding Matt and Evelyn for not trying that before going back to the conversation. Matt and Evelyn find Ellie outside the flat and tell her she should have answered her phone. They insist that the guardianship isn’t about Vietnam but about making her feel included. She refuses to believe them however, accusing them of trying to control her.
Next morning, Justin is walking on the beach and passes Nate kayaking. He tries to get away but Nate asks how Tori is and realises she told Justin what he said. Justin reluctantly confirms it. Back at the house, Tori confirms to Phoebe that he just came out with it while they were mucking around. Phoebe asks how he said it and Tori ponders if he just meant as friends, even though she’d rather he didn’t. She says they’re not even together but Phoebe points out that when they were, two other guys swept in and took over. She suggests Tori finds out. Meanwhile, Olivia meets Hunter near the beach. She apologises that her lecture overran but insists they can still do lunch.
Phoebe and Raffy rock up at the Diner discussing Tori and Nate. Raffy asks Ellie if Matt found her and admits he and Evelyn got her to call her. Phoebe sits them down for an explanation and Ellie says Matt and Evelyn are trying to make her go to Vietnam by becoming her guardians. Phoebe says that doesn’t sound like them and asks if Matt would confirm it if she rang him. Ellie says they’d say it was to be a family and Phoebe says that sounds more like them. Raffy agrees they were worried. Phoebe suggests they want to make up for upsetting her. Ellie stammers a bit but can’t disagree. Matt and Evelyn are sat on the beach, beating themselves up. Ellie joins them and says Phoebe gave her a lecture and she believes them. She asks if the guardianship offer’s still open; Matt jokes that it expired at midnight before confirming and she accepts. She also asks if they have beaches in Vietnam and if she’d get her own room and be allowed to bring her Xbox: If they’re going as a family, then she’s fine with it. They all hug.
Justin and Nate have gone to Salt. Justin says it was neither the best nor the worst timing. Nate tries to make out he didn’t really mean it before admitting he did. He didn’t expect Tori to say it back but didn’t expect her to run off either. Justin says both he and Tori struggle with that sort of thing. Nate thinks he should just pretend it didn’t happen; Justin tries to convince him that’s a bad idea. Tori comes in and Justin privately tells her to talk to Nate. Tori and Nate go outside where Nate says they’ve got their wires crossed and he just uses the word too much. As an illustration, he tells a passing Alf that he loves his hat. (“Flaming poms,”mutters Alf.) He goes on to say that it would be crazy to actually mean it, then realises his faux pas as Tori leaves upset. Justin gives a slow clap from the balcony.
Olivia and Hunter are nominally having lunch together at the caravan park house but Olivia is focused on sorting her schedule out on her phone. As soon as she puts it down, she gets a text saying a library book she wants is in. She’s prepared to leave it but Hunter tells her to go. Alf returns as she does and Hunter says they were only together for fifteen minutes, saying with school and uni they barely spend any time together. Alf tells him life isn’t always easy, reminding him how VJ and Billie made the most of the time they had. At the Diner, Evelyn finishes a phone call and tells Matt and Ellie that there’s a place but they’d have to leave in a little over a week. Ellie is fine with it and heads off to school to tell Raffy. In the midst of making plans, Evelyn thanks Matt for them being a family.
At Salt, Justin and Phoebe discuss Nate and Tori. Phoebe says they deserve to live happily ever after like she and Justin are doing. Justin notes it’s the first time she hasn’t freaked out at the idea. Phoebe says as they’re the experts they should help them get together. Justin isn’t as keen but Phoebe insists she has a brilliant idea. Soon after, Justin leads Nate along the beach to where Phoebe is waiting with Tori. They give them space to talk. Nate says he’s an idiot and does want to be with her. They kiss and, in the gaps, Tori says she loves him too and confirms they’re officially back together. Phoebe and Justin congratulate themselves.
Olivia meets Hunter outside the surf club, having skipped her afternoon tutorial. She apologises for before but thinks things will settle down once she’s got the hang of uni. She gets out a calendar, suggesting they schedule time just for them. Hunter however has an idea for how they can spend time together easily: Find their own place and move in together. Meanwhile, Justin and Phoebe arrive home. Phoebe is pleased with their efforts and also happy to be living with him, saying her freak-outs are over. Justin checks she doesn’t have any more problems with commitment, then says he has a surprise for her: He gets down on one knee and asks her to marry him. Phoebe swallows hard.
