Extended Summary

Marilyn is brought into hospital by the ambulance staff, with the ambulance officer explaining to Nate that they irrigated and gave pain relief at the scene. Alf trails them, saying that John’s on his way and imploring Nate to help her. At the beach house, Irene has filled Heath and Bianca in. Heath wants to go looking for Mick but the others dissuade him, with Irene saying the police are handling it. Bianca asks if she thinks he meant his apology and Irene acknowledges that somewhere in his twisted mind he wants to make things right. Darcy turns up and happily greets Heath and Bianca before asking Heath what he’s messed up now.

John arrives at the hospital and asks Alf about Marilyn. Alf says she’s being assessed and was burned. John is distraught, saying he thought she’d left. Alf tells him he needs to hold it together. In a nearby room, Justin comes round and finds Brody and Nate looking over him. He says he feels worse than when he came round from the surgery. They explain about Turner’s visit and the insulin injection but Brody assures him that she’s under armed guard at a Supermax. Justin thanks Nate before reflecting that he missed the meeting with Ava. He also asks Brody to fill Phoebe in.

Phoebe is asleep on the sofa when Brody arrives at the farm house. He shakes her awake and tells her he needs to talk to her about Justin. Phoebe is happy to go back to sleep until Brody tells her Justin’s in hospital. Phoebe goes to Justin’s room where he is also asleep. She takes his hand. At the beach house, Bianca and Heath are going to bed. Heath wants to talk about something, saying it won’t be the same as last time. Bianca accepts they need to talk but says not now.

Alf and John discuss calling Leah, saying she’s waiting for news. Nate rejoins them, saying Marilyn has serious injuries and may need to be transferred to the city. John asks to see her and Nate takes him to her room. There are burns all down her left hand side, with a bandage on her face. John sits by her. Next morning, he is pacing in the corridor. He takes out the lighter and toys with it, his expression fixed, but comes to when Alf turns up. John says Marilyn is sleeping and free of pain but the burns are really bad. He admits he hasn’t slept himself. Alf offers to go and get Marilyn’s things, thinking John should stay with her. John is worried she won’t want to see him after he left her.

Irene is on the phone and says to give her love to John. She tells Heath and Bianca about Marilyn being in hospital with burns. Bianca says they can leave if it’s too much trouble having them there but Irene says seeing Harley around helps. Heath gives Bianca a pointed look. She takes him into the kitchen and says they can’t tell Irene. Heath goes for a surf. At the Palmer house, Alf looks at a photo of himself and Marilyn. Leah has got Marilyn’s clothes, dressing gown and make-up, as well as a change of clothes for John. Alf worries about how they’ll cope.

Marilyn wakes up and calls out for John, who is asleep in a chair next to her. He also wakes and reminds her she was burned in the bush fire. Marilyn recalls dark and smoke. She cries out in pain and John calls for Nate who arranges for pain relief. Marilyn asks John how bad her burns are and he claims they’re fine and she’ll be back to normal soon. In his own room, Justin leaves a message for Nina, saying he expects she’s in New Zealand but has a good reason for not turning up. Nate comes in and checks on him, discussing his family going home. After Nate’s gone, Justin phones Phoebe only for her to enter the room.

Heath arrives back at the beach house. He again tries to talk to Bianca, saying he was there last time and things were stressful. Darcy comes downstairs and is angry that they’re fighting again, rushing out. Bianca and Heath track her down near the surf club. Heath sits beside her and she says she’s going to live with Bianca when they divorce. Heath says they’re not divorcing and weren’t arguing. Bianca agrees that it was justed a heated conversation. Heath explains that Bianca is pregnant. Darcy is delighted and hugs them both.

Nate rejoins John and Marilyn. Marilyn’s pain has improved. Nate says he needs to change her dressing and lifts up the gauze covering a thick burn on her side. John holds her hand during the procedure but looks horrified. Meanwhile, Phoebe is reflecting on the fact she didn’t even know Justin was in hospital and says she doesn’t know what their relationship is. Justin comments on missing meeting Ava and thinks getting stabbed won’t go down well with Nina. He apologises for missing her song and Phoebe admits she didn’t sing it. Justin convinces her to sing it now and she croons a soulful romantic song with the refrain “Can we work it out?” Justin says it was beautiful and they kiss.

Nate tells Marilyn that her burns should heal in 5-10 days, although they’re not sure about the ones on her side and hand. After Nate has gone, Marilyn tells John that she knows from the look on his face that her burns were worse than he said and tells him to leave. John runs into Alf in the corridor and Alf convinces him to go home and get some rest. John says to tell Marilyn he loves her and she can call him.
