Belle’s arrested by her own boyfriend. Bridget has Alf out of his depth. Rachel treats a familiar patient.
Extended Summary
Jack decides to visit Martha at the Surf Club, to see how her first day back at work since chemo is going, but when he arrives the bar is empty and customers are getting impatient. He finds Martha in the storeroom, crying, and she shows him the tufts of hair that have fallen out. Jack calls Alf who arrives with Bridget, knowing she’ll be discreet. Then Jack and Martha take their leave.
Bridget offers to stay and keep Alf company at the Surf Club. They’re getting on very well, and Bridget’s clearly very fond of him. But when she finally broaches the subject of her attraction, Alf is taken completely by surprise, and as her boss, feels the only appropriate response is to turn her down. She leaves humiliated, and after some time to think, he goes after her to apologise. He’s an old fashioned bloke, and in all honesty, he was a little intimidated by her forwardness, but this time when she asks him on a date, he agrees.
Rachel is thrilled to see Joe, the child she nearly adopted, and his father Dane when they arrive at the hospital. Until she sees the bruises covering the little boy, and learns he’s been admitted for a constantly bleeding nose. She can’t help suspecting that Dane might be hitting his son, but when she broaches the subject he flies off the handle, outraged by her allegations. Then the test results come back, and she feels terrible. Dane hasn’t been hitting his son, Joe has bone cancer. Worse, his mother isn’t visiting friends, she’s taken off, overwhelmed by the stresses of parenthood.
Belle is too busy to spend time with Angelo, but won’t say what she has on, he gets suspicious. Then, when he’s called in to disperse a protest at the site for the new development, he finds her chained to an excavator. It’s amusing at first, but Belle refuses to take his offer to leave without being arrested, even as some of the other protestors chicken out. Then when the tension between the protestors and workmen sparks into an all out brawl, Angelo and Jack are left with no choice but to start arresting the protestors, including Belle.
