Children: Unnamed son

Tom was a WWII veteran who shared a room with Alf when he was admitted to hospital following the Canberra excursion. He introduces himself and, after seeing Roo fussing over Alf, tells Alf that it’s good that someone cares about him. When Jett comes to visit Alf, Tom tells him that family is very important. On learning that Alf is a Vietnam veteran, he tells Alf & Jett that he joined the air force in 1941 and that he was in bomber command, heading up Lancasters. As Jett says his goodbyes, Tom urges him to remember the importance of families.

Tom returns from a scan and says goodbye to Roo as she leaves, at which point Alf asks Tom if he has any kids. Tom reveals that he has one son, but that he hasn’t seen him for years and that there is no point crying about it now. Later, a distressed Tom awakens Alf and tells him that one night after a raid, the plane he was flying was shot by a night-fighter and that he was forced to crash land in a field. He says that all six of his crew died and thus, never got home to see their families.

When Alf later wakes up and finds Tom’s bed empty, he is informed that Tom has passed away peacefully. The nurse looks at a tin that holds Tom’s war medals, and pictures of his son, and Alf tells her that he will deliver it.

After Alf arrives at the ANZAC Dawn Service, he hands Jett Tom’s medals and tells him that although he has a son, he knew that Tom would have wanted Jett to wear them at the Dawn Service.
