Extended Summary

Mali and Abigail are walking along the beach. Abigail complains that Mackenzie still hasn’t responded to Eden’s message. Mali suggests she’s still thinking it over. Abigail asks Mali to call her but he isn’t keen after what happened last time. Abigail suggests he call Dean and he agrees. Abigail is pleased they have each other’s backs, unlike some people.

At that moment, Levi is surprised by Mackenzie turning up with her bags. They briefly greet each other and Levi says he’s glad she’s back. Mackenzie asks about the arrest. Levi thinks they have other things to talk about first but Mackenzie says it’s the whole reason she came home and asks how much trouble he’s in.

Cash and Lacey walk through the park. Lacey says she understands Leah blaming her for Theo, because she was the same with Jo after Kristina died. Cash says that wasn’t Jo’s fault. Lacey says not to say this isn’t her fault because it is. Cash asks why she approached Leah. Lacey explains about it being Theo’s birthday and says she thought it would be nice to spend it together. Cash insists on walking her home.

At the motel, Tane has filled Jo in on his conversation with David, saying David’s right that he is on a suspended sentence and she’s only just learned what happened to her mother. Jo wryly asks what other secret conversations they’ve had. She tells him to let her know next time David has an opinion. David calls her at that moment and Tane asks to keep things quiet anyway. She rejects the call and starts kissing him again.

At the beach house, David is leaving a message for Jo wondering if Lacey’s with her when Lacey and Cash turn up. Although Lacey tries to stop him, Cash tells David about Leah having a go at her. Lacey says Jo has work stuff and heads upstairs. David wants to talk to Leah. Cash tells him to take into account that it’s Theo’s birthday. David asks Cash about Tane, saying he knows he’s on a suspended sentence and thought he was a good guy. Cash says he is and leaves.

At the surf club, Abigail asks Mali to see if Dean’s replied. Cash turns up and tells Mali that Lacey’s had a rough morning so might not be in if she’s rostered on. He asks Abigail about the night with Eden and Levi. Abigail sarcastically says Levi told them he really loved being arrested by his brother-in-law. Cash walks off as Mali chides Abigail, saying it would have just been another police officer. He gets a text from Dean saying Mackenzie left first thing and should be there, and notes something good came out of Cash arresting Levi.

Levi has filled Mackenzie in, saying he’s not been himself since the miscarriage but shouldn’t have taken it out on a patient, even an aggressive and intimidating one. Mackenzie asks what happens next and Levi says he’ll plead guilty at the hearing. Mackenzie is aghast that he’s just given up. Levi says there were a dozen witnesses. Mackenzie asks why she’s there if he’s throwing his life away. At Salt, Abigail brings Cash a meal, saying his arresting Levi brought Mackenzie back so he gets free food instead of being poisoned.

Mackenzie is wandering around the house ignoring Levi, who asks to talk about their relationship and wonders if she’s avoiding doing so because she thinks there isn’t a them anymore. Mali turns up to interrupt, apologising for what happened with the phone, and Mackenzie takes the opportunity to leave. At Salt, Abigail stresses to Cash that he doesn’t need to pay. Mackenzie turns up and asks Cash how to make the charges go away. Cash says it’s up to the court now and Levi’s done the right thing in being co-operative which will go well with the magistrate. Abigail suggests this means Mackenzie cares what happens to Levi. Mackenzie agrees but tells her to go clear some tables.

Jo reflects on how if they didn’t have families and jobs they could stay there forever. Tane offers her the rest of the afternoon. Jo then gets a text from David and says she’s been summoned for a family lunch to mark Theo’s birthday, saying goodbye. At Salt, Abigail tries to talk to Mackenzie but she insists she has a lot of work to do. Tane comes in and runs into David, who apologises for questioning him but says he still thinks he should stay away from Jo. Abigail gives him his takeaway and he leaves. Tane greets Mackenzie and they briefly discuss Levi’s arrest before Tane says she doesn’t need the stress. Mackenzie realises he doesn’t know and tells him about the miscarriage.

Tane follows Mackenzie downstairs as she insists she’s fine. She says it happens to a lot of people and is why you’re not supposed to tell people until three months but she was excited. Back at the farm house, Levi talks to Mali about how Mackenzie is using him as her punching bag. Mackenzie turns up and Mali leaves. She asks Levi why Tane didn’t know about the miscarriage.

At the beach house, Lacey teases Jo about meeting Tane at a motel again. Jo says she’s missed her being annoying but asks her not to tell David. David turns up with takeaway and notes that you want your kids to meet someone special who’ll love, respect and look after them, and he’s glad Theo was in Lacey’s life. They make a happy birthday toast.

Mackenzie reminds Levi that he said he’d tell people precisely so she didn’t have to deal with this. Levi agrees that he did but says he was trying to work out if they still had a relationship or not. Mackenzie says she lost a baby. Levi says he did too. Mackenzie says he pasted on a smile and went to his sister’s wedding. Levi says he understands she’s angry and in pain but if she wanted to push him away, it’s worked. He walks out, saying he’s getting away from her. Mackenzie looks upset.

At the Parata house, Tane is on the phone to someone, saying he put his foot in it with Mackenzie. Mackenzie then turns up and breaks down in tears. At the surf club, Mali greets Levi, who says he’s been focused on Mackenzie coming back as if it would solve everything but it hasn’t. He says she’s looking for reasons to hate him, and if she thinks they’re over, he wishes she would say it.
