Extended Summary

Mackenzie and Levi walk outside the surf club after their appointment at the clinic. Noting how quiet he is, Mackenzie wonders if Levi saw something she didn’t on the ultrasound. Levi assures her he’s simply anxious waiting for the test results. Mackenzie just wants to keep busy. At the police station, David gets a call from Harper saying that Cohen has finished at the hospital and tells Adrian he’ll be escorted there. He adds that he and Cohen will be kept apart until they get confirmation. Cash arrives as Adrian argues that he wouldn’t be there if they didn’t think there was a good chance he was the father. After Adrian has gone, Cash asks about him and David explains he might be Cohen’s father. He apologises for not letting Cash know and confirms Roo knows and isn’t happy.

At the Diner, Roo tries to reassure Cohen over the tests and sends him to get a treat. Harper comes over to Roo and says Adrian’s on his way to the hospital. Roo tries to question her about Adrian but Harper refuses to give information. Marilyn comes over to Roo, who worries that she’s raised Cohen’s hopes over an adoption that won’t happen.

At Salt, Levi comments on Mackenzie being glued to her phone instead of keeping busy. Cash comes in for a double espresso and asks about them, causing Mackenzie to realise that Eden has told him about the IVF. Cash wishes them luck and notes Eden has locked herself away in a rehearsal bunker across the road. Mackenzie gets a call from the clinic and goes out onto the balcony, with Levi following. After talking to them and asking them to put it in an e-mail, she tells Levi there were seven follicles, meaning they could have seven mature eggs.

Alf arrives at the station looking for David and asks him for some straight answers about how it’s playing out. David says they need to make certain but Alf asks what will happen if Adrian is Cohen’s father. David says it depends on what Adrian and Cohen want and on what the department will allow. Meanwhile, Roo and Cohen are walking by the beach. Cohen wants to go and get his school stuff. Roo tries to put it off again. When she sees Adrian approaching, she changes her mind and tries to steer Cohen away. Adrian chases after them, calling out to Cohen, and, despite Roo trying to claim not to know who he is, tells Cohen he remembers him and might be his dad. Roo calls over to Cash who blocks Adrian, reminding him he was told to keep his distance.

Cash takes Adrian to the station, with Adrian protesting that he hasn’t committed a crime. Cash explains to David about Adrian introducing himself to Cohen. Adrian says he ran into them by accident but David isn’t impessed and has him taken to the interview room. At the house, Adrian is desperately trying to get information from Roo as Alf turns up. Roo eventually admits that his mother knew Adrian before he was born. She also admits the adoption process is on hold. Cohen realises his tests at the hospital were part of it and worries that he’ll be sent away.

Back at the farm house, Mackenzie asks Levi to translate the e-mail for her. Levi says they have to do the trigger injection tonight. The egg harvesting will be 36 hours later, then he’ll do his bit. He reminds her it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and worries about the new side effects she’ll have to deal with. At the police station, David tells Adrian he can’t do what he pleases. Adrian suggests David would do the same if he saw his son for the first time in years. David says he’d do what the police said and asks why Adrian didn’t fight for him as a baby. Adrian says he tried but Samantha threatened him with an AVO. Cash, who has come in during the conversation, offers him a lift back to his car.

Cash drives Adrian back to the Bay and checks that he’s okay. Adrian realises that he’s freaked Cohen out and notes that Cash talks as though he knows him. Cash says they’ve got a lot in common, he plays footy with him and Roo takes good care of him. At the police station, Harper tells David that the DNA tests will take a week, since it’s not considered a priority. David tells her about Adrian telling Cohen who he is. Harper decides to go and see him, noting if the DNA doesn’t match, then Cohen’s left with another disappointment.

Roo notes that Cohen is sitting still without reading. Harper turns up and says she heard what happened. She talks to Cohen who says he doesn’t want to live with Adrian if he is his father and wants to stay with Roo. Harper says it’s complicated and Cohen asks if what he wants doesn’t matter. Roo makes an attempt to reassure Cohen, who goes upstairs. First Alf and then Marilyn join them as Roo wonders if her starting to adopt Cohen makes a difference if she goes for custody. Harper says, as far as the law’s concerned, she’s just an emergency foster carer. Roo realises she won’t be able to stop Adrian getting custody.

At Salt, Cash approaches David to discuss the situation. Cash thinks Adrian is genuine and is still there to see Cohen. David says that if his story’s true, he’s been robbed of most of Cohen’s childhood. After ascertaining that Cash is engaged and has no children, he notes that Cash would make a good dad.

Levi looks up advice on how to help a partner through IVF on his laptop. Mackenzie arrives back from work and he says he was just looking up the trigger injection. He checks she’s ready. Later, Mackenzie is laid out on the couch as Levi prepares the injection. She points out she’s already put her body through the emotional wringer. Levi gives the injection to her.

Alf, Roo and Marilyn are preparing dinner. Roo wonders if she should get a second opinion about her chances of custody, grumbling that she’ll lose Cohen if Adrian’s his father. She goes up to get him. Alf tells Marilyn he’s worried that Roo’s not coping. Marilyn suggests Alf’s not doing too well either and Alf admits Cohen has grown on him.

Next morning, Mackenzie is lying on the couch in some distress, snapping at Levi and saying she’s gone from being cold to being hot. She apologises and asks Levi to get her some water. He does, looking worried.
