Extended Summary
Sat on his own in the caravan park, Dean rings Ziggy and leaves her a message which is mostly small talk about the surf. Ziggy texts back saying they’ll talk later. At the race track, Ziggy observes the races for a moment before being called over by the pit boss, Kurt, with the other candidates. He says it’s time for a timed run through and that it’s their job to make sure the driver is safe and can win. He puts Ziggy in charge of changing the tyre, saying the record is five seconds but he’s giving her ten. Ziggy is shocked but Kurt says if she can’t do it she doesn’t belong there.
Willow and Alex are walking near the surf club. Alex offers to be with Willow when she tells people about them but Willow wants to do it alone. They see Colby and Mackenzie come out of the surf club arguing. Mackenzie refuses to discuss things furthers and goes back inside. Alex makes herself scarce as Willow approaches Colby, as does Dean. Willow tries to talk to them both but Colby is preoccupied with Mackenzie and walks off. Dean quickly goes after him, telling Willow to talk to Mack. Willow goes up to Salt and asks Mackenzie if she’s okay. Mackenzie notes that Colby only wants to spend time with her when he isn’t busy with Bella and he’s always busy with Bella. She says that this early in a relationship you’re meant to want to spend all your time together, before admitting that she does.
Colby and Dean walk towards the caravan park. Colby complains about Mackenzie not understanding his reasons for not calling her, saying Bella was in hospital. Dean points out that Colby found time to call him with an update and calls him a terrible boyfriend. Later, Colby protests to Dean that every time he takes his eye off the ball with Bella, something bad happens. He says Bella’s his responsibility but Dean says he can’t make Bella his whole life: Eventually she will grow up and move on.
In the Diner, Irene asks Maggie about how Ziggy’s doing. Maggie hasn’t heard but assumes she’s enjoying it. Bella comes in and asks for a coffee but Irene insists on giving her a green smoothie because she’s looking out for her health. Bella chats to Maggie about the schoolwork she’s missed out on and fails to get Maggie to agree to getting her teachers to say she doesn’t have to do it. Irene asks about Colby not being with Bella and she explains he went into work. Irene says things will soon be back to normal for them. At Salt, Dean runs into Willow and asks about Mackenzie. Willow tries to arrange to speak to him and Colby but soon gives up. Dean approaches Mackenzie who isn’t interested in discussing Colby and instead asks him about Ziggy, realising he misses her.
Kurt times Ziggy as she completes a tyre change. He tells her she’s getting slower and Ziggy admits she got the position wrong. The driver, Alana, comes over and warns Kurt about driving people into the ground. Alone with her, Ziggy blurts out that Alana’s a “chick”. Alana says Kurt’s only hard on people he thinks have potential. Ziggy doesn’t notice her phone getting a text from Dean saying to call him when she has the chance. Meanwhile, Colby goes round to see Bella and fumbles through answering her questions about him supposedly going to work. He asks her what she wants to do after her HSC. Bella says she’s only interested in getting it and afterwards she’ll just go along with whatever Colby wants.
Willow and Alex arrive at the Diner. Willow is apologetic about not telling Colby or Dean but Alex is understanding. Alex takes a table as Willow approaches Irene at the counter. Irene asks if she sorted things with Alex and Willow admits they’re dating. Irene notes she seems happy. Willow decides to go and tell Colby and Dean now. Irene gives Alex a cake and welcomes her to the family. Down on the beach, Dean wonders why Willow has summoned him but she wants to wait until Colby gets there. When Colby arrives however, he instantly launches into a speech about how Bella doesn’t have any plans except for him and he needs to focus on her. Dean gets an alert and heads off to a lesson; Colby asks what Willow wanted and she says it’ll keep.
Ziggy and the other pit trainees push the car back into the garage. Ziggy tells Alana she doesn’t think she’s up for it but Alana recalls how she couldn’t even get a start time once. Kurt tells the crew they’re going for drinks but Ziggy decides to stay and practise. Kurt okays it so long as she turns out the lights. Meanwhile, Colby finds Mackenzie at Salt and admits she was right: He will always put Bella first and it’s not fair to expect her to wait until he’s got the time for her, so they should call it quits. After he leaves, she starts crying.
Alex turns up at the beach house and is greeted by Irene and Bella, who invite her to stay for dinner. Willow emerges from her room and invites Alex to join her. Irene and Bella check the other knows they’re together. In the bedroom, Willow and Alex are lying on the bed. Willow is again apologetic, saying she could have said something but was scared. Alex notes she was so scared of telling her parents she was gay that she blurted it out at Christmas dinner after she got drunk and started crying. She points out Willow told Irene, which is why they can be there.
Mackenzie joins Dean at the caravan park with a box of beers, noting he won’t catch her in bed with Colby again. She accepts he’s chosen Bella and says things started great between them but then they changed and he stopped making time for her. Although optimistic about him and Ziggy, she says if there is a problem he needs to fix it straightaway. Meanwhile, Ziggy is working on the car and fails to spot her phone ringing with another call from Dean.
Next morning, Ziggy is chatting to Alana. She sees her kiss Kurt and is surprised they’re together; Alana says they keep it out of work hours to stop people making assumptions. Dean then pulls up in his car to surprise her. Ziggy runs over in a panic and tells him he can’t be there.
