Ash breaks down at Kat’s funeral and is driven to drastic measures. Leah discovers that mystery girl Jasmine is running from something – but what?
Extended Summary
Ash has set himself up in Robbo’s cottage, with a row of beers and his phone laid out on the table in front of him. Back at the hospital, Jasmine is more settled and Tori gives instructions for medication. Jasmine grabs her arm as she’s about to leave and says sorry for before. Tori reminds her about the car accident and says they’ll help her sleep. She exits and meets Leah, telling her Jasmine’s a bit calmer. Leah asks if her reaction is normal. Tori says not exactly but it’s not unheard of, and she was probably reliving the trauma of the car accident.
Outside the Diner, Leah relates the incident to Marilyn. She thinks Jasmine’s reaction was about something other than the accident and is going to see her in the morning. Meanwhile, Justin leaves the surf club, on the phone to someone (probably Brody) confirming he took a delivery at Salt. Tori comes up and asks if he’s seen Ash. She says she knows she agreed to give him space but it’s his baby’s funeral tomorrow. Justin says they can’t force him to go but Tori thinks he’ll regret it if he doesn’t.
Ash looks out the window and checks his phone; he has missed calls and messages from Tori, Justin and Irene. He takes another swig of beer and examines the broken cot. He pours alcohol over it, makes a pyre around it with wood and paint, then drops a match onto it, before walking away from the burning building. Next morning, Justin encounters Ash on the beach. Ash rambles about how Robbo didn’t show up. Justin reminds him it’s Kat and the baby’s funeral. Ash doesn’t think he can do it.
Irene and Marilyn are making preparations at the Diner and Irene asks Leah to help take things to Salt; Leah is willing but wants to get away to the hospital. John arrives and tells them Alf saw Ash with Justin on the beach. His arrival means Leah can leave. She goes to the hospital but finds Jasmine’s room empty. She asks a nurse who says Jasmine should be there and calls security.
Justin takes Ash back to the house. He tells him that Kat’s family are staying at Yabbie Creek and Ash can make changes to the funeral and say a few words if he likes. Ash doesn’t like the idea of saying goodbye to Kat and his son while Robbo’s still on the loose. Justin says the police will find him and Ash shouldn’t be concentrating on that today. Tori comes in and awkwardly greets Ash, with Justin giving them space. Later, the two of them are in the bedroom. Ash is still angry that Tori kept things from him. He says he doesn’t want to say goodbye, he wants to give his baby the life that he’d planned. Tori says she wants to be there for him.
Leah is driving when she sees Jasmine walking along, looking lost. She pulls over and introduces herself, explaining she sat with Jasmine. Jasmine admits she doesn’t know where she’s going and asks about her car; Leah says it was written off in the accident. She tries to get Jasmine to go back to hospital, then convinces her to come to the Diner for a feed. Later, Jasmine is finishing her meal and asks why the Diner is closed. Leah says it’s the funeral of a friend today, the local police officer. Jasmine presses for information and Leah admits she died in the car accident Jasmine was in. Jasmine is horrified, saying she never wanted to kill anyone, just get away. Leah says it wasn’t her fault and the other car ran a Stop sign, but Jasmine starts having a panic attack and Leah gets her water.
A group are gathered outside the church including John, Marilyn, Irene and Roo. Ash is standing with Tori and Justin. He identifies an older woman and younger man talking with Alf as Kat’s family but declines to go and talk with them. The hearse draws up with the coffin. Most people go inside and the minister instructs them to stand as Alf, Justin, McCarthy and Murray carry in Kat’s coffin. Ash follows carrying in the baby’s small coffin and takes a seat with Tori and Justin. Alf addresses everyone, saying usually you say goodbye to someone when they’re old. He addresses Kat’s family, Devera and Paulo, saying he doesn’t have answers for them but can tell them Kat was liked in the community and made a difference.
A number of residents including Alf and Roo place flowers on the coffin. Ash steps forward and places a small teddy bear on his child’s coffin. Tori and Justin join him and Tori offers to talk while Justin takes him back to his seat. Tori says that they need to mourn another life, one whose mummy wanted to meet him and whose daddy had plans for. Ash gets up and walks out. Justin follows and tries to get him to go back inside but Ash still wants to find Robbo. Justin says Robbo’s one man in the whole world and Ash won’t find him on his own. This seems to give Ash an idea: He gets his phone out and walks away.
A convoy of vehicles, including several SUVs, drives into town. Alf, John and Marilyn are walking near the surf club. Tori joins them and asks if they’ve seen Ash, adding that Justin is driving Kat’s family back to the city. They see Ash waiting for the convoy: The occupants emerge, all rough-looking types, most with “Blood and Sand” tattoos. Alf and John are horrified and explain to Tori that they’re the River Boys and won’t want anything good. The group’s leader, Dean, greets Ash, saying there’s more on the way. Ash says Brax said he could call them if he needed help and asks if that’s true. Dean says that they’re there.
