Extended Summary
Justin and Scarlett are in the city, where he assures her they lost her pursuers. Scarlett thinks she can’t go back to Summer Bay but Justin tells her she can if people think she’s left. Alternately, he could give her the money to set herself up somewhere else. He tells her her credit card will be tracked so she needs to use it to lay a trail. He gets her a new phone and tells her to go to Cairns, buy a ticket to Bali, then use cash to get back. He also tells her to bin her old phone and dump her credit card afterwards. Scarlett protests that all her stuff is on her old phone and Justin tells her to send it to the new phone. She says there’s a voice message she wants to keep so he tells her to play it and record it. Justin gives her some privacy as she gets in the car and records the child’s message. She asks Justin why he’s helping her and he says he cares about her. After a slightly awkward moment, they go to get food.
Hunter bangs on the bathroom door, asking Olivia to come out. She does so but isn’t in a great mood, saying he shouted at her when she was trying to help. Hunter says they’ve argued before but Olivia says she thought they’d always have each other’s backs but instead he turned on her. Later, at the caravan park house, Hunter tells VJ that Olivia’s right: He did turn on her when she’s the one person who’s always stood by him and he doesn’t blame her for not wanting to be around him. VJ thinks she’ll get over it. He asks about Hunter’s search for his father, suggesting he talk to Peggy again. Hunter says she thinks he’s a pathetic coward and has left town anyway.
Kat runs into Ash and Luc near the Diner. She apologises for being late with the rent but he thinks she shouldn’t be paying rent on a flat where she doesn’t live anyway. He comments on the difficulty of getting a new flatmate who’s fine with living with a baby. Kat says she’ll be round later to pick up her stuff. Tori watches the tail end of the conversation from a distance and afterwards approaches Ash and asks if he’s all right. They head into the Diner where Ash jovially notes that he doesn’t get women and has given up on them. Tori tells him he needs to have a beer with Justin and suggests he get Leah to look after Luc. She ends up accepting an offer to spend the evening with him instead.
Olivia is helping Irene at the Diner, despite Irene telling her she doesn’t need to. VJ turns up and Irene makes herself scarce. VJ tells Olivia that Hunter’s a mess and asks her to give him a break, adding that she did talk to Peggy when Hunter told her not to and that Irene and Marilyn have forgiven him. He says that’s what you do with someone you want to spend the rest of your life with. Not long after, Peggy arrives at the beach house in answer to a summons from Olivia. Olivia says Peggy was right about her: She was afraid of going to jail. Peggy says that since the police aren’t pressing charges she doesn’t have to worry anymore. Olivia says Hunter still needs her. On cue, VJ brings a confused Hunter in.
Ash roots through the fridge in the Diner flat and can only find leftover pizza. He tells Tori that it’s hard to shop with Luc, adding that people judge him more for having a screaming baby with him now Kat isn’t around. He notes he misses having an adult to talk to. Tori says she’ll get some food and drink, assuring him he’s fine to drink while looking after Luc. Later, Ash is regaling Tori on the waste product now Luc is on solids, while she’s putting food out. She calls him a super dad, then spills wine down her front.
Justin lends Scarlett his car, saying he’ll get the bus back and hoping that it’s a reason for her to return. Scarlett says she needs to tell him the full story: The message she recorded is from her son Max, who died nearly a year ago. She cries and Justin comforts her. Later, Scarlett tells Justin she’ll text him from the new phone. Justin tries to check that she’s coming back but Scarlett doesn’t give a direct answer, simply saying that she’d better get going. She drives away.
Hunter, Olivia and Peggy are at the Diner. Hunter acknowledges that Charlotte might still be alive if he hadn’t acted the way he did. Peggy admits that Charlotte made her own choices and had other options: She could have come to her. Hunter says she was keeping things secret from him as well at the end. He suggests the last year has been tough for both of them. Peggy regrets not being there for him and going to the police. Hunter says it’s good she did: He’d have kept lying for the rest of his life but now it’s out in the open. He suggests they start afresh and spend the next few days together. Peggy agrees and says she’ll also help him find his father. Hunter and Olivia head home and find VJ still there: He wanted to know the outcome and points out they only made up because of him. Olivia tells Hunter she’s proud of him and VJ decides to leave them to it. Hunter promises he won’t shout again and Olivia promises she’ll put up with it if he does. They kiss and he promises to marry her one day.
Tori has changed into a different top and is trying to clean the stain from the old one. She comments on how she’s a klutz who lives with her siblings, has no social life and spends all her time around sick people. Ash replies that she’s smart, funny, cool and beautiful. Tori looks affected, although Ash has looked away. Downstairs, Kat tells Justin she couldn’t find out anything about Adelaide and he tells her to forget it. He apologises if he said the wrong thing about her and Ash and asks about them. Kat says she cares about him and Luc but they want different things out of life. In the flat, Ash has hung Tori’s top up when she cuts her finger chopping. He takes her to the sofa and bandages the finger. They look at each other, clearly having a moment, then Tori rushes out.
