Extended Summary

James wakes Roo up after she fainted in the Apartment. She tries to brush it off, but James won’t feel better until they get a professional opinion. The doctor assures them that it was probably just low blood sugar, but took blood anyway. When Morag suggests that perhaps Roo is experiencing menopause, Roo’s initially offended. Then she googles the symptoms and begins to think Morag could be right. Shocked she’s reached menopause already, Roo admits her suspicions to James. James’ positive reaction – he never saw himself having kids anyway – is a pleasant surprise for Roo.

Hunter finds Olivia staring absent-mindedly, avoiding her uni study. He guesses she’s just distracted by the thought of her birthday, she’s turning eighteen tomorrow! He makes a bunch of fun suggestions that they could do together – go to a casino, get tattoos etc. But Olivia doesn’t want to. She’d like a low-key birthday for her eighteenth. Hunter surprises Olivia with a fancy dinner out to celebrate her ‘birthday-eve.’ She eventually acquiesces, but her energy remains low. Hunter and Olivia are both surprised when the bartender brings over a cocktail, on the house – it’s just turned midnight, she’s now eighteen. Olivia marches off, devastated. Hunter is apologetic and Olivia admits she hates birthdays, they remind her that she doesn’t have any parents. Hunter knows it’s not the same, but she has him and Irene. They love her. The next morning Hunter surprises Olivia with the option of a nice lunch with all her loved ones in Summer Bay. Olivia really likes the idea, as Hunter proves she’s not alone.

Marilyn arrives at prison to visit John, she’s got the sign in routine down pat, knowing the guards name. She updates John on life in the bay, but is distracted as she realises that other inmates are staring at her. John admits that he thinks he would go crazy without her, she’s all that’s keeping him going while he’s in here. John fails to notice how anxious Marilyn is growing under the eyes of the other inmates. Morag arrives at the prison with good and bad news, John could be walking out of there thanks to an appeal, but they would only be appealing the sentence, and not the verdict. He would still, forever remain guilty. They would simply argue that the sentence was excessive. Marilyn is completely adverse to the idea, he’s innocent after all. John disagrees, he has always felt guilty. He wants Morag to make it happen. Morag tries to assuage Marilyn’s feelings. She’s busy waiting for a miracle that won’t happen. After a chat with Roo, Marilyn returns to visit John and informs him that she agrees with him, appeal the sentence not the crime. Marilyn is heart broken that he has to suffer, but she knows he’s innocent no matter what the courts think. As Marilyn goes to leave the prison, another prison smacks her backside, causing her to snap at him. John comes over furious, shirtfronting the man until the two are pulled away by the prison guards. Morag is surprised when Marilyn announces her turn around on the idea, she wants John home, whatever it takes. Marilyn downloads to Roo, she’s horrified, during the scuffle at the prison things escalated so quickly. She saw John in a different, more violent light – she’s beginning to wonder if John really is the man she thinks he is.
