Extended Summary

While searching a drawer for scissors, Evelyn stumbles across Oscar’s wristwatch. Still affected by Oscar ‘appearing’ to her at the accident, she’s emotional at the discovery. Alf is concerned for her. But Evelyn’s happy as she puts it on, even though it doesn’t work – it makes her feel close to her brother.

At the Pier Apartment, Matt fusses over his sister. Ellie is casually grateful he’s made her lunch but is more focussed on getting to school. When Ellie’s gone, Roo admits to Matt, Ellie’s settled in more easily than expected. Matt admits he was spooked by his aunt’s warnings but it seems unfounded. Roo tells Matt how proud she is of him for taking on this responsibility. Matt smiles – life’s okay right now.

Life’s not so rosy for Leah and Zac who meet separately (with Roo and John respectively) to discuss their marriage crisis. Zac feels Leah isn’t supportive of him in his new role as Principal. Leah feels Zac is putting her and their marriage second and can’t see it changing. John and Roo individually suggest the couple need to foster the romance in their relationship, like it was at the start. Leah and Zac wonder if this is the problem – they never had the excited anticipation phase – they went from housemates to parents with nothing in between. Leah has an idea how to go back to this – by Zac moving out. And Zac agrees. They put on a brave face when Zac prepares to go, reminding each other they’re on an exciting adventure.

Mason bumps into Marilyn who asks after Brodie and Evelyn post plane accident. Mason reveals Brodie is recovering well but he’s less sure about Evelyn. They haven’t seen each other since she told him she ‘saw’ Oscar and Mason corrected her, giving a scientific explanation for her vision. Marilyn muses if it gives Evelyn comfort to believe this, does it matter if she’s wrong? Mason takes this on and goes to visit Evelyn. Evelyn’s excited when she realises Oscar’s watch is suddenly working now. Mason doesn’t buy into the significance of it but says nothing. He apologises for their earlier disagreement, but Evelyn is fine. She gets Mason doesn’t believe her but she knows what she saw…

At the beach, Roo’s stunned when she discovers Ellie there. Ellie makes excuses for why she’s wagging, but Roo’s not buying it. Ellie needs to face the music – and Zac. At the Principal’s office, an embarrassed Matt reassures Zac this won’t happen again. But Zac reveals Ellie hasn’t been to school at all. Matt is shocked then relieved when Zac says he’s not going to officially note her absences given she’s had a lot of adjustments. Matt’s horrified as Ellie stalks off with out even a thank you. He chases after her for explanation, but Ellie defiantly reminds him of his own truant history and storms off. Roo offers to help but Matt doesn’t want Roo to think he’s not in control.

At home, Ellie is furious at Matt for having a go at her at school, and not trusting her. Matt says he understands what Aunt May was on about now. He’s immediately apologetic. That was unfair. Ellie accidentally breaks a vase as she storms out of the kitchen. Matt’s left feeling out of his depth. Roo offers to help anyway she can, and makes Matt recognise that their must be something else going on with Ellie. Roo doesn’t know what it is, but suggests that it’s up to Matt to find out. He can’t give up yet…

Evelyn seeks out Marilyn for a tarot reading: she has questions about Oscar. Marilyn warily agrees, but when the cards don’t tell Evelyn what she wants to hear she storms off. Mason returns to Evelyn with her uni notes to find her distressed, planning to drive…somewhere. Concerned, Mason jumps in the car with Evelyn. As she drives Evelyn opens up about her belief that Oscar is protecting her, so nothing bad can happen – at all. Despite not wanting to argue, this is too much for Mason to swallow. Evelyn drives recklessly around corners as Mason freaks. Evelyn is determined to demonstrate how Oscar is looking out for her and plants her foot firmly on the accelerator.
