Extended Summary
It’s nighttime at the crime scene. Kat speculates to Emerson that the safe they’ve just found with the body is the one stolen from the diner. She goes on to talk about the backpack being found nearby, and as she speaks her voice wavers. Emerson tells her they don’t know anything yet and stops her as she tries to look at the body. He tells her to go home, he’ll let her know of any updates. He also reminds her to keep everything to herself for now.
At home Andy tries to offer Josh some food, pulling out Josh’s headphones so that he hears him. Josh isn’t interested and rejects Andy’s attempts to bring him out of himself.
Ash comes down from Angelo’s to meet Phoebe in the surf club. They try to talk about the problems they are having and agree to meet up the following day as Ash doesn’t have much time. As he gets up to leave Alf tells them that it was Billie who found Oscar. Ash wants to go straight over and talk to Oscar but Alf tells him everything Oscar knows anyway, including the location of the shed where they found him.
Hannah bumps into Andy at the diner. They talk about Josh and after Andy fails to be subtle asking for her help, Hannah offers to go round the following day. As Hannah moves off to order her food Andy looks back at her wistfully.
Later at the station Kat and Emerson talk about the body and Kat brings up Charlotte again, despite being warned away from that line of investigation. Emerson tells Kat that the Assistant-Commissioner has decided to go public to appeal for information. Kat follows him into his office and makes a heartfelt plea to convince him that her instinct is correct, Charlotte did this. Emerson just says they have to wait until the body is identified before they can do anything.
The next morning Charlotte is up early making coffee and sees the news report on the body being found. She stares at the tv in horror, watching footage from the spot where she buried Denny.
Kyle sits at the table with Andy and gesturing to Josh, asks whether he’s even left the couch. Andy shakes his head just as Hannah arrives, full of energy. She takes away Josh’s iPod and tries to persuade him to come for a walk. He just asks if Andy put her up to this and feels around for his iPod. As he reaches out he knocks over an open drink can and spills it everywhere. He’s embarrassed and everyone tries to help until Josh snaps, telling them all to shut up. Hannah gently explains that she knows how daunting it is to go back out into the world but that they’ll just go for half an hour and will be with him the whole time. Josh reluctantly relents and they go for a walk, moving slowly towards the surf club. Hannah and Andy keep reassuring Josh but all the competing noises are becoming too much and he says he’s tired asking to go home. Once Hannah’s gone Andy continues to talk about how well it went but Josh makes it clear that he’s not interested. The more Andy tries the more worked up Josh becomes and Kyle arrives just as Josh’s taking all his frustration out on Andy, who quietly leaves the house. A little later Kyle tells Josh to stop giving his brother such a hard time. He’s understanding but tells Josh to stop feeling sorry for himself.
Alf is looking at the Coastal News and talks to Kat about the body being found, he can’t believe it’s happening in their little town. As they speak, Charlotte comes down from her apartment. The two women exchange heavy looks and Charlotte jogs off.
Phoebe sits waiting for Ash in the diner. Kyle walks in and she asks whether he’s seen Ash and they talk about Billie. Meanwhile Ash is at the shed where Oscar was found but there’s no Billie. A text arrives from Phoebe ‘Breakfast was lovely, thanks’ and he jumps in the ute, racing back towards town. Ash finds a troubled Phoebe by the water’s edge. He apologises and explains that he was out looking for Billie. Phoebe is understanding but still upset. Ash promises never to lie to Phoebe again but she tells him that she doesn’t want to be in a relationship where she always comes second. He tells her he loves her and she says she loves him too. There’s a sad moment before he asks if it’s over and Phoebe nods, tears in her eyes. Ash walks away broken hearted, leaving a devastated Phoebe behind.
Andy comes home later to find Josh still on the couch but without the iPod. Andy apologises and Josh asks why, saying he’s the one who’s been nothing but a pain. Andy explains that he’s always going to be there for Josh, who is afraid that he’s always going to be a burden. Andy is stunned as Josh tells him it would be better if he’d let him die.
Phoebe wanders along the pier, declining Ash’s calls. She’s contemplative, trying to work out whether she’s done the right thing. Meanwhile Ash puts his phone away only to find Kat, who’s upset. No longer able to keep it to herself as he asks if she’s okay, she tells him that she thinks Denny is dead. A stunned Ash takes Kat in his arms as her tears fall, overwhelmed with grief.
