Extended Summary
Kat arrives back at work after her suspension and wants to dive straight back in to investigating Charlotte but Emerson tells her she’s not to pursue it. She takes on his warning and moves on to the search for Oscar. Down at the surf club Alf updates Kat who leaves to organise more people to help. Across the room Matt approaches Maddy who assumes he wants to talk and tells him not to even try.
Oscar is being dragged along by an unseen figure who shakes Oscar awake, then gives him water. Urging him to only take small sips the mystery person helps him drink, then sits him up as he chokes. Oscar sees her face come into focus and recognises Billie! As she tends to Oscar’s injuries he asks what she’s doing there, last time he saw her she tried to burn down his house with him inside it. Billie tells him to believe what he wants but that she didn’t do it and explains that she’s been roughing it. Oscar tells her how he went for a swim and got caught up in the storm. Billie calls the police station and Kat answers, quickly taking down the details of where Oscar is. When she asks who it is Billie hangs up, then rushes around picking up her belongings, readying herself to leave. Oscar asks why she doesn’t stick around, doesn’t she want to see Ash? She has to appear in court soon anyway… Billie just goes, with Oscar stopping her to thank her for saving him. As the ambulance officers prepare to take Oscar to hospital Kat questions him and he tells her it was Billie who saved him. He also tells her that the backpack which she spots was found by Billie, washed up by the storm. Kat takes the backpack to the station with her, reporting back to Emerson that Oscar is fine. She’s looking at social media, scanning Denny’s photos when she stops, finding the photo that she’s looking for: Denny’s belongings, packed ready for Europe, including a backpack which looks like the one she’s brought in. Kat tells Emerson her theory and in the midst of explaining she lets slip that Charlotte had Denny’s itinerary. Emerson can’t believe she went into Charlotte’s apartment before they got the search warrant. He tells Kat that he won’t report it but that if anything else happens he won’t protect her. After he leaves the room Kat tries again to call Denny, leaving another voicemail urging Denny to call her.
Leah and Irene continue to talk about what happened to Irene all those years ago. Irene explains the significance of the blanket, that she embroidered it as she imagined the life she would give her child. But the baby was taken away without her ever even holding it in her arms. Back at home Irene folds the blanket and apologises for how she reacted when Leah used it to stem the blood from Irene’s cut hand. Irene goes on to say how she feels that her true life was taken from her when they took her baby away. Leah suggests trying to find the ‘child’ but Irene thinks it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie.
Zac brings Oscar home and Evie rushes up and hugs him, intensely relieved to have him home. He and Maddy exchange a loaded look and Leah subtly gestures for Zac to leave the room with her. Maddy and Oscar know they need to talk but as they move to go outside Matt arrives, pulling up as he sees Maddy, Oscar and Evie. After a pause he tells Oscar he’s really glad he’s okay. Oscar thanks him, then continues outside with Maddy. She apologises for being cruel but Oscar shrugs it off, saying he doesn’t know why things turned out the way that they did and that they’re probably both to blame but that it’s time they moved on. They say that they still love each other and want to remain friends. Oscar says it’ll take a long time to heal but he does want her in his life. Soon after, Maddy goes and tells Matt what happened. She also tells him that she really likes him and Matt acknowledges that they can’t do anything now, he doesn’t want to hurt Oscar either. They agree to wait, and to see how things will go.
Home alone, Irene frantically scrubs at the bloodstains on the blanket but can’t get them all out. She sobs in frustration and starts to search the cupboards. She finds a bottle of wine and downs a glass.
Kat’s at the station when there’s a call out to all available units. When Kat arrives Emerson is already on the scene and he briefs Kat – some hikers have found the body of a female in her mid twenties. Kat stares at the tarpaulin covering the body and is suddenly hit by the awful thought that it could be Denny…
