Maddy ends her relationship with Oscar. Irene’s strong façade begins to crack. Hannah is drawn back into Andy’s orbit.
Extended Summary
As Maddy fumes about Oscar kissing Asia, he accuses her of having feelings for Matt. Maddy can’t admit the truth, and marches off. Oscar returns inside and Evelyn checks that he’s ok, but he doesn’t want to talk. Oscar goes to Matt and tells him Maddy’s left, and Matt goes to find her, leaving Oscar hurt.
Josh tries to avoid Andy as he encourages him to get out of the house. Andy notices the pain in Josh’s hand, but Josh tells his brother to back off, forcing Andy to keep his hurt feelings to himself.
Olivia thanks Irene for supporting her through counselling, especially when she’s got her own issues to deal with. Irene doesn’t want to get into it, and covers by being cool about Olivia having VJ and Hunter over. But she’s struggling to keep her demons at bay.
Matt finds Maddy at home trying to pull herself together. She allows Matt to comfort her, but pulls away, not trusting herself with him. Maddy sends him away as Alf comes out to check on her. She falls into his arms, still heartbroken.
Chris vents to Irene about being lenient with Olivia, but she shuts him down. Hannah thinks it’s sweet that Chris cares about Olivia, and he asks if it’s one of the reasons she loves him, making her embarrassed and uncomfortable. But Chris has made dinner so she’s stuck there – so regretting ever saying the L word to him.
Andy offers to help Josh eat, but he snaps and is embarrassed when he tips the food into his lap. Josh accuses Andy of making things harder, pushing Kyle to intervene, but Josh just walks out, getting harder to manage by the second.
Olivia and Hunter gang up on VJ as they play a video game, leaving him surprised at how close they are. Olivia shows the boys the dress she wants to wear to the wedding online, but Hunter tells her he likes the shorter one better. When Olivia moves off, VJ points out the dress Hunter suggested will expose her cuts, but he thinks VJ just needs to relax.
Alf thinks the fact Maddy has feelings for someone else may have led to Oscar kissing Asia. Evelyn arrives home with Oscar, and she and Alf move off. Oscar apologises and offers no excuses, but wants Maddy to apologise too. Maddy argues that she didn’t act on her feelings, but admitting she likes someone else hits Oscar hard, and he leaves, their relationship on the brink of disaster.
Hannah’s still awkward around Chris, but when she sees Andy, she’s concerned to hear that Josh isn’t adjusting well to being home. Despite agreeing to keep their distance, Hannah heads off with Andy to try and help. Meanwhile Irene unloads on Chris, and Leah suggests she get some help. But Irene pushes her away, making Leah even more worried for her state of mind. Meanwhile at her place, VJ realises he’s the third wheel, and advises Hunter to be more sensitive about Olivia’s scars. But Hunter thinks she shouldn’t be treated differently because she’s got issues. They continue to look, and VJ throws aside Irene’s baby blanket, unaware of its significance.
Trying to get through to Josh, Hannah reveals that the doctors wrote him off – it was Andy who fought to keep him on life support. Josh is stunned as he processes how lucky he is to have a second chance.
Unable to sort things out with Oscar, Maddy breaks up with him, harshly. Oscar’s shattered, and walks off, leaving Maddy finally free, but wondering if she was too vicious. At the diner, Matt fills Zac and Leah in on Maddy and Oscar, but as Zac heads home, Oscar arrives and tells Matt he won. Zac tries to settle him down, but Oscar’s a broken unit and goes off by himself, as Matt takes in his hollow victory.
Irene arrives home and loses it when she notices the baby blanket on the floor. Olivia tries to apologise, but the teens are left rattled by Irene’s overreaction as she moves to the kitchen, barely able to keep it together.
Matt asks Maddy if she broke up with Oscar for him, but she’s not ready to admit it yet and asks him for space, leaving their future up in the air.
Andy tells Hannah that what she said to Josh worked – he’s finally asking for help. Hannah knows better than to get caught up in the moment, but as she leaves, Andy tells her he misses her. His feelings for her are still strong.
Feeling sorry for Evelyn, Zac offers to dance with her, and she’s touched. It’s not the formal, but it’s not a bad consolation prize. Meanwhile Oscar sits on the beach in turmoil, and decides a swim might take the edge off. The next morning, Zac finds out that Oscar never came home. Back at the beach, Oscar’s shoes and jacket are still where he left them. But he’s nowhere to be found…
