Extended Summary

Macca’s life hangs in the balance and Cassie watches on with fading hope, as the doctors whisk him away to theatre to treat his severe internal injuries. Sally and Ric are both deeply relieved to discover Cassie is not injured. Ric, however, is still troubled by Cassie’s decision to risk her life for Macca.

The news arrives that Macca’s condition has stablised and Cassie races to his room. Macca is weak but finds the strength to thank Cassie for being there for him, even after all of the bad things he has done to her. Cassie doesn’t want to talk about the past but Macca wonders if her actions were a result of the feelings she may still have for him. The doctor interrupts with the results of the tests on his arm injury and Cassie and Macca listen on, stunned, as Macca is told his arm may need to be amputated. Cassie tries her best to remain positive, but Macca insists this is his punishment for hurting her.

Dan is lost in his reverie, when Leah approaches, concerned by how Dan is dealing with Peter’s death. Leah informs Dan that Jack’s transplant was a success but Dan takes the news in with no more than a little nod – it seems he is deprived of any emotion. The moment is interrupted by Amanda. She moves to comfort Dan, devastated by the news she has just heard of Peter’s death. The three of them are having a cuppa as Amanda begins to reminisce of their good times. Dan listens on quietly, until suddenly his manifestation of emotion overflows and he rips into Amanda, accusing her of depriving him of quality time with Peter. Dan is left seething, as Amanda races out, deeply shocked by Dan’s outburst. Leah tries to comfort Dan. He admits his outburst was not aimed at Amanda, but more at himself for the feeling of guilt that he wasted so much time being angry at Peter – and now he’s gone. Dan finds some resolve and knows the time has come – he picks up the phone, ready to call his parents with the devastating news of Peter’s death.

Dan is withdrawn following the phone call and Leah places down the mail on the table before moving off, knowing Dan needs some space to grieve. Dan sifts through the mail and comes across a card. He opens it and discovers a “Happy Anniversary” card from Peter. Suddenly, all the emotion take over.

Meanwhile, Amanda is reeling over Dan’s outburst but when she arrives home she is reminded of the appointment Kitty had at the hospital to see the cancer specialist. Kitty tries to come up with a quick excuse, after all, Kitty isn’t even sick, but Amanda isn’t taking ‘no’ for an answer and insists she escort Kitty to the hospital. Uh-oh…how’s Kitty going to get out of this one?! Kitty is nervous as she enters the hospital. As she moves off down the corridor alone, she is surprised to hear a voice calling out her name – it’s Belle. Belle explains she was transferred back to the local hospital and proceeds to introduce her grandmother to Morag, Sally, Ric and Alf, who are in the nearby treatment room. Kitty is getting flustered – Amanda is just around the corner! Kitty makes a quick excuse to leave and finds Amanda before dragging her out the door. That was way too close for comfort! Ric makes a beeline for Cassie who emerges from Macca’s room. He can’t believe Cassie is even wasting her time on him! His comment sparks an argument but Cassie is stunned when Ric reveals he is still in love with her. Cassie doesn’t want to hear it and thinks that Ric is being completely selfish. She storms off, back to Macca’s room, leaving Ric saddened by Cassie’s rejection.

Both now free from hospital, Alf and Morag are walking near the church as they talk of the town’s suffering. In the distance, Morag spots Kitty and Amanda. She is curious as to what Belle’s grandmother is doing with Amanda? Kitty is becoming overwhelmed by Amanda’s questions about her illness and decides to head home. Amanda continues on and crosses with Morag, who is surprised when Amanda reveals the other woman she was just with is, in fact, her mother. Amanda clocks Morag’s strange reaction and is shocked when Morag mentions that Kitty was just down at the hospital, claiming to be Belle’s grandmother. What the..? Amanda is utterly confused!

Amanda storms in to the house, seething and desperate for an explanation. Kitty is taken by surprise as Amanda demands to know what’s going on. Kitty braces herself – she’s just been caught out but will she tell Amanda the whole truth?
