Extended Summary

The emotions are high as everyone reacts to Dan waking from his coma. It’s the first positive step towards Dan’s recovery. Slowly, Dan becomes more alert and the others are relieved to learn the truth about Dan’s accident. With all that was pending on his mind and lack of sleep, he recalls nodding off behind the wheel and waking up with no time to stop. Leah apologises to Dan for the way she has been treating him and offers to take care of Dan. Dan accepts. Things are beginning to look brighter for them both.

Meanwhile, Peter is back at work, struggling to keep on top of things. It’s been a long and emotional day. Jack questions if Peter has seen any results from forensics about the hair found at the scene of Josh West’s murder. Peter insists he hasn’t, as he proceeds to his office. Once inside and out of sight, Peter retrieves the forensic results in question and stares at them. He picks up the phone and promises the person on the other end that he’d do anything to keep the results a secret. The documents reveal the hair found at the murder scene belongs to Peter…Uh-oh…did Peter kill Josh?

Rachel is stunned into silence as she absorbs the truth about her mother’s accident. Rachel is hurt and angered that her father is responsible and that she has been lied to all these years. Things start clicking into place and Rachel realises her father’s help in gaining her new position in the emergency department was motivated by his intentions of asking her to cover for him. Rachel’s anger spills over as she tells her father there is now way in hell she would lie to save his career! Rachel bursts into tears as she informs Kim of her father’s terrible confession. Kim is not at all surprised, as he admits to the phone call he heard at their dinner. Rachel berates herself for being a fool for not seeing through her father’s ways.

Robert later returns to see if Rachel has reconsidered his request to cover for him. She is disturbed by the nerve of her father to even suggest it, after all he has put her and her mother through. Robert warns if he loses his career he will not be able to provide the appropriate care for Rachel’s mother. The horrible implication sinks in – her own father is blackmailing her – what will she do? Rachel is torn as she realises she can not provide the money for her mother’s care but is utterly disgusted by Robert’s lack of remorse for his actions. Kim vows to support Rachel and together they will look after Elaine. Rachel is touched by Kim’s generosity and love.

Rachel confronts her father with renewed confidence and tells him there is no way she would help him now. Robert warns Rachel she will regret her actions but Rachel insists she never wants to see him again. It has been a long day, as Kim and Rachel begin to inform Jack what has happened. Their conversation is interrupted by Rachel’s mobile ringing. Her face falls as she discovers her father’s office has been cleared out – Robert has vanished! Rachel now faces the challenge of providing her mother’s care – a thought that overwhelms her – but Kim reassures her of his support. Nothing will beat them if they’re fighting it together!
