Bec's baby joy

From: By Sydney Confidential's Fiona Connolly

THE nation's most anticipated million-dollar baby has arrived with Bec and Lleyton Hewitt welcoming a baby girl early yesterday.

The baby arrived at 1.45am at the lightning speed that has shaped their 12-month relationship - a 4½ hour natural birth at the Royal North Shore Private Hospital.

The girl was a surprise for the pair, who had a "gut feeling" it would be a boy and had settled on the name Cody.

And in a happy twist, Lleyton's former Davis Cup coach Tony Roche visited the same hospital yesterday - to take a peek at his new granddaughter, Claudia.

The Hewitts have sold their story and first pictures of the baby to Woman's Day for more than $1 million.

Within 12 hours of Bec, 22, giving birth, the magazine began speaking on behalf of the couple.

"Bec and Lleyton are absolutely thrilled. The birth went very smoothly and they have been touched by the public's well wishes and support," editor Alana House said in a statement yesterday.

The hospital pulled out all stops to help the couple protect their lucrative deal, laying on five security guards around the clock.

RNS Private CEO Greg Brown even gave up his own car space to accommodate Hewitt's Mercedes M-class 4WD - believed to have been bought to confuse media prior to the birth.

"We're trying to help them as much as we can, I mean given the media interest in this situation," Mr Brown said.

The couple arrived at the hospital around 9pm on Monday night and were quickly ushered in to the luxury Crow suite of the birthing centre where Hewitt, 24, remained with his wife and newborn.

As of last night, the tennis ace had not left his wife's side.

One pregnant woman due to give birth in three weeks told The Daily Telegraph a friend inside the hospital had told her: "Don't have your baby yet - Bec Cartwright has taken over the entire Crow Suite".

"The Crow Suite is the one everyone wants. It's like a hotel," the woman said.

Mr Brown said while security had been employed, "no one has been inconvenienced" by the celebrity patients.

While media camped outside the hospital from dawn yesterday and a steady flow of flowers arrived throughout the day, it was not until the afternoon that family and friends arrived.

The parents of Mrs Hewitt, as she now likes to be called, arrived around 4pm, shielded by what appeared to be a heavy-set minder.

Hewitt's hometown of Adelaide was celebrating the news yesterday, with his proud grandparents Max and Dawn reporting he was "as happy as a lark."

"He was up all night - there for the whole thing," Dawn Hewitt said.

Bec's former castmates also welcomed the news.

"I'm so thrilled for Bec and Lleyton, a little girl how gorgeous" Home and Away star Ada Nicodemou said.

Mother and child are expected to be discharged sometime before Friday.

Read it again - Lleyton's former coach was visiting HIS new granddaughter called Claudia - which happens to be in the same hospital where Bec has just had her baby, whose name has not been revealed.

I've changed the topic title accordingly
