So on the early years instagram page they made video of how horrible Ben was. Really worth the watch. I've mentioned it in an earlier post. They could have played that relationship as a really believable toxic, domestic abuse storyline but it was a little ahead of it time instead got played off as normal

So all the retcons have been pretty bad but which do you think was the worst? Irene having a serial rapist son was over the top what was even his back story did they give a reason behind how he was? All all just weird only thing that kinda like that could of been interesting was the Billy VJ Irene connection. Had VJ and Billy stayed for awhile as little family unit could of given Irene little family and some purpose to her character outside of the diner but instead all we got was horrible custody battle. Martha I just never warmed up to it was horrible and now continue to dreadful now she left and Alf has a wife who never goes and see him. Again this had possibility give alf some purpose and life again but instead just ruined history of the show seem erase Alisa from history and just gives Alf a reason to go away. Roo having a brother could of given her something to do as well but instead he was just vilan of the month to never be seen again. Rather Martha been whole different character and new lost interest for Alf if anything Marilyn daughter is the rewrites that annoys me the least and if Heather had stayed as a new character she could of been really good for Marilyn character could still started the same way but build a bond over time really like the actress but no instead she becomes a insane killer who is never mentioned again. In theory all 3 of these had real potential to of given some under used characters new life but they all just handle horribly making the rewrites in history not worth it. Going further back Colleen being a Stewart never sat right with me I stopped watching not long after (for other reasons) and didn't see it play out long term but I just never liked it Colleen daughter happen when I was a kid so never thought much on it but another character vanish from existence and it just icky when you think she dated Alf who thanks to the retcon was her uncle

I'm going to add McKenzie and Logan to this I was absolutely loving Logan was damn shame his time was cut short they were a couple i was invested in and it been very long time since I've said that. I understand the real reasons why but it very disappointing I'm just going have try tell myself at least Logan didn't stay around to the point I couldn't stand him. Would love a return some day.

They really did a huge rewrite of history for such little pay off. Are we ever going to see Martha again? I doubt it. How long they going keep this long distance marriage for and dropping excuses why she never visits the bay? I know gives Ray good excuse to come and go as he pleases but seems to clunky and unrealistic to have a long distance marriage. Wish could get update on Ric and Matilda like Alf going over for thire wedding or birth of thire baby as an excuse for Ray to have a brake. Wonder if they would ever kill Martha off or just keep this going until day Ray had enough and they have to write Alf out. I watched the first year of the Braxtons brothers then missed pretty much the rest. I started watching again when Ricky was on her way out. I want to watch Casey's death, where a good jumping in point so I can see all the build up to it?

Sally and Flynn were another one for me wish were end game. Again Sally time on show after he left wasn't anything great her and Brad felt so forced and rushed seeing as both not long lost a spouse. I can understand this one bit more don't think Kate had expressed any desire to leave at the time so had no real choice but to kill Flynn off and was one of the better cancer storylines we've had. I'd been way more annoyed if they had just simply split so I know show did best it could but still doesn't stop me wishing they got a happy ending

What couples do you wish were endgame and got their happy ending together? Biggest Biggest one for me is Nick and Jade, they were my absolute favourite couple and their break up was so awful. It's coming up to 20 years since they broke up and I'm still really dirty on the show for it. Adding insult to injury was Jade getting with his best friend, I couldn't stand her and Seb together. Jade did nothing great after Nick left than got one of the worst endings ever. Noah and Hayley - Noah's death was dramatic and made for an amazing moment for the show, but again Hayley's remaining time of the show wasn't great. The Kim/Scott who's the father storyline, than ending what was a great character time on the show with a recast. Will and Gypsy got a happy ending, then they split them up and both got horrible returns as our last memory of the characters. That was insulting. Might as well add Ken and Irene I don't feel as strongly about this one but even if they weren't endgame I wish Irene had got to marry him and be happy for a little while, since over 20 years later she been on her own for a lot of it. The whole Smith family really did get done dirty in love

There's the Alf Maureen relationship as well, years later turning out she was his niece. By memory I'm very sure they did have sex. Something that you may not know is it is perfectly legal to marry your neice/nephew in Australia as well as your couisn (no I don't mean second cousin). I'm a marriage celebrant and i didn't find out this until I did my training, our whole class was grossed out. But then it illegal to marry an adopted sibling who you aren't biologically related to, it's weird.

Yeah but that was always painted as something bad wasn't something that came off acceptable at the time and looks terrible re watching it decades later

What do you think been the darkest storyline over the years? Sarah Lewis storyline up there for me especially the hostage climax. I was only a kid at the time but remember Gypsy being held hostage and that really creeping me out when I was younger. If anyone could give me a run down on what that was all about be appreciated. I haven't gotten that far yet but not surprised. It would have been better if their relationship turned into a domestic violence relationship. It doesn't even have to be a physical one but just a controlling one. Show how slowly it can all start but might been bit too advance for the 90s

Been watching 89/90 and just noticed some things that didn't age very well over last 30 plus years. The storyline where Martin girlfriend just came and got taken by her ex bikey boyfriend and was last ever heard of her. And in general lot of the guys outlook on girls and expectations of them waiting on them and doing all the housework. And I'm really amazed at how often the word bitch gets used in the early years didn't think a family show in that era would get away with it. Going ahead a little in time but how they glorified Kane and Kirsty love as star cross lovers against the wolrd. No way they'd get away with that today What some other storylines or aspects that you can think of
