Extended Summary

Irene runs into Colby and Bella near the Diner. They have collected Robbo and Jasmine’s things from the motel, since with the investigation over, they’ll be moving back in once they’re finished in the city. After Irene has gone, Bella reminds Colby they’ve got no food in. Colby wants to go to Salt for breakfast. Bella, keen to avoid Mackenzie, suggests the Diner instead. Colby is happy for her to go there and he picks her up later so Bella decides to go with him. Outside the surf club, Ziggy is talking to Willow about Dean losing his temper. Willow doesn’t find that particularly surprising for Dean but Ziggy says he never does it with her. Colby and Bella come along and are filled in. Seeing Mackenzie on the balcony of Salt, Bella convinces Colby they should go and see Dean.

Willow and Ziggy go to the gym. Willow says that Dean mentioned he was having trouble fitting the surfing lessons in around his shifts at Salt, which seems to make Ziggy think. She cries out of helping Willow out and leaves, just as Alex arrives. Willow realises she’s forgotten they have a PT session which she nevertheless refuses to let Alex out of. Later, Willow is having a fraught telephone conversation with an employee who can’t make it in until later, while also managing to drop a customer’s change. Alex offers to help out.

Dean admits to Colby and Bella that he was a bit harsh on Ziggy but explains that since the lessons are free he’s having to rely on his shifts at Salt for cash. Colby suggests he explain that to her. Dean goes back to his students and, despite Bella trying to get him to stay, Colby makes another attempt at heading for breakfast. At Salt, Ziggy asks Mackenzie to cancel Dean’s shifts so he can concentrate on the surf lessons and Mackenzie agrees. Mackenzie admits she’s missing Colby but doesn’t see the point in getting in touch with him when nothing’s changed.

Colby and Bella arrive at the surf club. Bella convinces Colby to play a game of pool with her to work up an appetite. Ziggy comes down and briefly chats to them before going to see Dean at the old board shop counter. She tells him about cancelling his shifts. Dean is annoyed and tells her she’s not helping. Ziggy leaves upset. At the farm house, Ben is on the phone to Maggie chatting about his therapy session but hangs off when Ziggy comes in. She tells him about her run-in with Dean, then senses she’s about to get a lecture. Ben points out she was taking over and suggests she asks Dean what he needs. Ziggy asks about his session and Ben says it was a start.

Willow and Alex have made a list of everything that needs doing at the gym, including paying the laundry and updating the online information. Alex asks if anything can go and Willow crosses out the midday classes. She acknowledges she needs to hire someone but has no idea how to choose a candidate. Alex offers to help practise interview techniques since she’s on call, saying she enjoys role play. (Cue awkward smirks.) A short time later, the two of them are in the office, with Alex posing as an interviewer and Willow as an interviewee. Alex gives Willow pointers as they go along, saying the candidates should be confident, not give glib answers and be focused with repartee. Willow gives direct answers, saying it’s best to be yourself. Alex compares interviews to first dates, with Willow indicating her dates have never been as good as this. They look awkward and break eye contact before carrying on.

Dean has gone to see Mackenzie at Salt and tells her Ziggy didn’t think it through and he still needs the shifts. Mackenzie agrees to give them back and Dean mentions Colby and Bella are downstairs. Dean goes to meet his class, walking past Bella when she tries to talk to him. Mackenzie loiters on the stairs, as if undecided whether to approach. Seeing this, and Colby looking at her, Bella drags her brother out on the pretext of helping Dean.

Dean is preparing the class, telling them to wax their boards when Bella and Colby arrive. Bella volunteers Colby to help with the lesson, which Dean agrees with as long as he’s in charge. Bella checks the lesson will last two hours and leaves them, looking pleased. Some time later, Dean’s part of the class are doing well practising jumping up onto the board but Colby is berating his section. Ben and Ziggy arrive and Dean tells Colby he’s fired, to Colby’s relief. Dean puts Ben in charge while he and Ziggy talk. Ziggy apologises for bulldozing him but Dean says he’s going to cancel his shift at Salt tonight because he does need a break.

Still playing the part of an interviewee, Willow claims to have been a stuntwoman and private detective. Alex notes she’s gained the confidence they were talking about and suggests she draws up a short list for interviews. Later, Willow thanks Alex for her help while Alex notes it got her out of the session. Willow suggests they get a coffee together but Alex is called in to work.

At the Diner, Irene notes Bella finished her meal quickly and also looks happy. Bella says she’d built up an appetite and had a day when everything has fitted into place. She predicts that Colby will be too busy to think about Mackenzie and will soon forget about her. At that moment, in Salt, Mackenzie sends Colby a text suggesting they talk and then hears a text alert: Colby is standing behind her.

At the surf club, Dean and Ziggy meet up with Ben after the lesson. He notes one of the girls caught her first wave, which Dean attributes to his own teaching. Bella comes in and asks where Colby is but Dean hasn’t seen him in an hour. She looks worried. Upstairs, Colby tells Mackenzie the investigation and threat are over. Mackenzie says he’ll still be in danger but Colby claims most of his cases are stolen garden gnomes and parking fines. He takes her hand and says he misses her. Bella arrives and is furious, saying she can’t believe it. Colby tells her they’re talking and Bella shouts that Colby would be better off throwing Mackenzie downs the stairs than getting back with her.
