Extended Summary

Justin shows up at the Morgan house to collect Raffy, whispering to her and Mason as he does so. He says that Ava’s in the car, which excites Raffy. After she’s gone out, Mason tells Justin that Brody is still in bed. Justin wishes Mason had told him that before he started whispering and reminds him not to let Brody know about Ava. No sooner has Justin gone then Brody appears and wonders where everyone is: specifically why Justin’s bed hasn’t been slept in. Mason dismisses the fact and tries to get going but Brody insists on going with him, since he doesn’t want to be left alone. As they walk, Brody wonders why Justin didn’t call and Mason says he probably slept at the garage. Brody offers to help with the ocean swim but Mason dissuades him, suggesting he call Scarlett instead. Mason meets up with Alf and says he can’t stay long. Alf thinks it’s to do with Hunter although Mason claims he needs to study. Alf says Hunter’s had a hard time lately and tells Mason to give him some leeway.

At the Diner, Olivia suggests to Hunter that they meet up for lunch but he says he’s going to be busy. Olivia asks why he didn’t tell her about Zac’s e-mail. She tries to suggest that it’s a good thing that Zac is okay with him looking for his father but Hunter says he’s not interested and leaves. Scarlett enters on the phone to Brody, agreeing to meet him later. Ava calls her over to the table where she, Justin and Raffy are sitting and they joke about the “rush hour” at the bait shop (two customers). Ava invites Scarlett to go down the beach with them and Scarlett eventually agrees to go for an hour. A short time later, Justin has made a sand castle, which Raffy teases him about. Ava notices Scarlett’s bracelet and asks about the locket. Scarlett quickly makes her excuses, saying she has to go and see Brody. Justin warns her he’s having withdrawals.

At the surf club, Mason gives Hunter a sign to put up on the beach, adding that he should then come back and help him take stuff down there. Hunter grumbles a bit but Mason points out they both want to get it done quickly. Meanwhile, Brody is pacing out the back of the house. Scarlett turns up and Brody thinks she’s been sent to check up on him. Scarlett reminds him he invited her around. Brody apologises, saying he’s worried about Justin being AWOL. Scarlett says she was just with him, Ava and Raffy on the beach. Brody is surprised to hear that Ava’s in town. Scarlett gets a phone call but ignores it and offers to make Brody a cuppa.

Justin leaves a phone message for Scarlett. Mason grumbles to him a bit about having to work with Hunter. Justin tells him about Scarlett acting weird about him. Mason suggests that she’s into him. Later, Justin and Ava are in Salt when Scarlett comes in. Justin approaches her and asks about Brody; Scarlett wonders why Justin didn’t tell him about Ava. Justin tries to do a letting-her-down-gently speech, saying he’s not ready to start anything. Scarlett is annoyed and says she’s not interested at all before walking away. Justin looks awkwardly at Ava.

Marilyn arrives at the Diner and apologises to Olivia for being late. She is surprised to find Raffy is helping out; Raffy says she got bored at the beach. Olivia compliments her coffee-making skills and Raffy offers to help with the food, saying she learnt from Brody. Marilyn tells her Alf’s on his way and gives her advice on what he likes. Later, Marilyn heads home and finds John there. He has just got back from a session with Bailey and says he’s going to see him again. Marilyn gives John a present: She has had the last photo of him and his father framed. John puts the letter from his father in the back of the frame before setting it up by the window.

Hunter is ready to move another load but Mason says he’s going and isn’t interested when Hunter asks what he’s supposed to do when the swimmers get there. Hunter invites Mason outside for a fight. Mason goes outside with him but refuses to hit him, despite Hunter trying to goad him by shoving him and slapping his face. Hunter’s exhortations get increasingly tearful until he walks away and sits down in the sand. Mason awkwardly crouches next to him and tells him it’s all right. Later, they are sat together at Salt, with Hunter having apparently filled Mason in. He apologises. Mason says he lost his parents when he was twelve and you have to focus on what you’ve still got, adding that Hunter finding his dad might turn out to be a good thing.

Alf is on the phone at the Diner, telling someone he’ll drop the keys off. Scarlett comes over, complaining about what Justin said. Alf suggests that, however misguided, Justin was just trying to do the right thing. Olivia gives him the food for the event and says she’ll go down the beach with him to check Hunter and Mason haven’t killed each other. When they arrive however, the pair are working together setting up, seeming quite chummy. Alf sorts out the registrations while Olivia hands out drinks. Hunter approaches her and repeats the advice Mason gave him earlier about focusing on what you’ve got. Alf calls the competitors together and invites Hunter and Mason to take part. As the race starts, the pair are at the back of the pack, playfully jostling each other.

Justin has taken Ava to the garage where he is showing her how to check oil levels. Scarlett turns up and Justin sends Ava to get cleaned up. Scarlett apologises for overreacting and Justin says it was Mason that put the idea in his head but is curious as to why Scarlett has twice disappeared on him lately. Scarlett says it’s just stuff in her past. At the surf club, Hunter is cleaning up on his own, telling Olivia he owed it to Mason. Olivia offers to help out. Hunter says he’s going to look for his real dad.

Brody finds Justin, Ava and Scarlett at the Diner. Ava asks if he’s still sick and Brody replies that he’s sick of being lied to. Scarlett takes Ava away as Brody demands to know why Justin didn’t tell him she was in town. Justin says he’s in no state to be around her. Brody asks what else he can do: He’s going to the meetings and staying clean. Justin apologises and Brody insists he’s not about to break. He heads home where he bluntly tells Mason not to keep things from him, then goes into the bathroom. As he is washing himself, he sees Kate behind him in the mirror and wearily notes that she’s back.
