Extended Summary

Maggie is on the phone and tells the rest of the family that the mechanic will be another three hours, meaning they won’t arrive at her mother’s until gone midnight. Ziggy silently celebrates. Coco asks to borrow Maggie’s phone and gets turned down. Ziggy suggests she eyes up a surfer; Coco is annoyed that Maggie told her. Alf approaches and tells them they’re in Summer Bay, offering to help out. He takes them to the caravan park, where they can stay the night while the car’s being fixed. As he gives Ben and Maggie details, an unenthusiastic Ziggy and Coco check out the van. They run out screaming on finding a possum in a cupboard and aren’t mollified by Alf saying it’s just Mr Bojangles.

Kat tells Ash they should have talked adoption through. Ash points out that she just gave a straight no. Raffy comes home and awkwardly goes to her room. Kat says she was expecting things to just go on as they were, adding that she’s not Luc’s mother. Ash ignores his phone and says he’s going to the hospital. There, he finds Leah and Tori with Luc. Leah thanks him for talking to VJ and agrees with the adoption idea. Ash hesitates but says it’s still going ahead. After Leah’s gone however, he admits to Tori that there have been problems.

At the Diner, Alf tells John and Marilyn about the Astonis, including the fact that he thinks Ziggy has Ben wrapped round her finger. John isn’t really listening though and makes his excuses. Marilyn tells Alf that John is worried that his memory will never come back. Alf tells her to talk to him, saying he needs some tough love. Marilyn heads home where she finds John has put some flowers on the table. He says he picked them and that his headache went when he had a lie down, but doesn’t want to talk. Marilyn says she’s not moving until he does. John says he’s angry: Mostly at George for leaving them alone but also at Enid for covering it up…but there’s nothing he can do about it.

Kat makes a phone call to Raffy, apologising for earlier. She runs into Leah, who is again appreciative of the adoption plan. Kat says that she and Ash still have to talk about it but claims that it will be all right in the end. At the hospital, Tori suggests to Ash that if the main aim is to keep Mick away then he could adopt as a single parent and maybe add Kat on later. However, Ash things Kat will bail on them and it could be the end of the road for them.

Alf is setting up the water tank at the caravan park. Nearby, Ben comes back from a run and Coco refuses an offer to join him. Ziggy approaches having got dolled up. Ben and Maggie decide to go and get some food, leaving the girls behind. Neither are happy about it so Ziggy takes Coco to Salt. She orders them drinks and tells Coco to get whatever food she wants, although she is vague about how she’s going to pay for it, saying they’ll be back before anyone notices. Tori comes in and joins Kat at the bar. Kat asks Tori to stay, saying Raffy is joining her and also adding that she needs someone to talk to, saying she thinks she and Ash are breaking up. Tori agrees to stay for a drink. Ziggy watches as Kat puts her wallet down on the bar. Coco suggests ordering a salad but Ziggy tells her to get a pizza.

Leah nearly bumps into Ben as he enters the Diner. Maggie enters a notable gap later and, seeing Leah looking at Ben, jovially notes that that’s why she married him. Leah is somewhat flustered and makes herself scarce, while Ben is bemused by Maggie saying Leah was checking him out. They agree that Summer Bay was a good place to break down. At Salt, Ziggy goes over to the bar as Kat is telling Tori about her argument with Ash. Ziggy “accidentally” knocks Kat’s wallet off the bar and takes the opportunity to remove $50. However, Raffy, who has just entered, sees her and tells Kat. They approach the girls’ table and Kat asks for the money back. Ziggy sarcastically asks if she’s going to call the police. Kat produces her badge.

Ben and Maggie arrive at the police station and are greeted by Coco, who tells them Ziggy is being questioned. They ask Kat if they can see her. Kat goes to the interview room and tells Ziggy her parents are there and she’ll have to sign out before she can go. Ben assures her Ziggy will never do anything like this again. Kat isn’t convinced but lets Ziggy off with a warning. At the Diner, John apologises to Marilyn for his outburst but says it was good to get it off his chest and he knows he has to get on with his life. Nearby, Tori tells Leah that she felt like a fraud listening to Kat when she’d already heard it from Ash. Before they were interrupted, she thinks she advised Kat to tell the truth and is worried Leah will think that she only got involved because of her crush on Ash. Leah tells her she did nothing wrong.

Next morning, Kat goes to see Ash at the garage. She tells him she considers him and Luc family and he should press ahead with the adoption, although she’ll need time before she can get on board. Ash says he’s meeting a lawyer. Ben turns up and assures Kat the family will be leaving town soon. Ash tells him the car’s running but he needs to hold onto it because the clutch is stuffed. Ben says that if it’s running he’ll take it.

Back at the caravan park, the family load up the car. Ziggy tries to apologise to Maggie, while Coco seems glad to see the back of Summer Bay. Ben struggles to get the car in gear and when he finally accelerates the car goes into reverse…straight into the water tank. Ben says at least they didn’t hit a pipe… which is the cue for them to be sprayed with water, as he did exactly that. A short time later, Alf patches up the damage. Ben says he’s a builder and will fix it. Alf accepts the offer, telling Ben to use his first name. Ben joins the rest of the family in the caravan and tells them he has to stay on a week. He suggests they go on to Maggie’s mother’s alone. Ziggy wants to stay and Coco wants to go. Maggie, with casting vote, decides she doesn’t want to face her mother alone. Coco is horrified but Maggie tells her to go out and make friends.

John comes home from a stroll and assures Marilyn he’s fine. Marilyn heads out to the shops. No sooner has she gone then Bede appears. He says Marilyn’s phone call convinced him to look up in the roof. He produces a suitcase with John’s name engraved on it. John checks inside, finding what looks like a sports trophy and papers…notably a letter from George to Enid and John, written the day he died. They conclude it must be his last words…
