Extended Summary

Roo thinks Alf should see a Doctor. Alf tries to distract her concern by asking about James. Roo doesn’t need James’ support when she has her dad. VJ seeks out Leah to check how she’s feeling about her divorce with Zac. He insists it will get easier with time, something Leah acknowledges. She agrees it is time for change and reveals she’s going to sell her share of the Diner. VJ is floored, feeling like this is a snap decision, one she hasn’t thought through, but Leah is determined.

Meanwhile, Irene is subdued after Leah’s declaration. Irene’s not ready to give up on their partnership and friendship. Their conversation is interrupted by John whose spirits have been buoyed by Marilyn’s appearance yesterday. John offers to repaint the bathroom, much to Irene’s chagrin, as John still has to rehang her door. She questions who John really wants to help and suggests he put his energy into something more productive than her house.

With this push, John reveals to VJ that he has decided to raise money for the Surf Club, and ropes him into helping. However John’s efforts seem more to do with impressing Marilyn than actually helping the community. After a hasty and poorly planned pitch, John doesn’t get permission from the Surf Club to host a charity ball. Frustrated John takes it out on VJ. After hearing from VJ that John’s ball is no longer going ahead, Marilyn finds John attempting to move the boat engine in the Surf Club by himself. She’s concerned he’s taking on too much. John misreads this as criticism and fires up at Marilyn. Shocked she asks why he’s doing so much. John reveals it’s all for her. Having thrown out his back, John is helped to the couch by Marilyn and given a hot water bottle. He apologises for snapping at her, but she reveals she’s more disappointed that he’s only doing all this to impress her and not to help others. VJ comes to visit John. John moans about Marilyn being upset with him. VJ tries to get him to put his efforts elsewhere if the surf club doesn’t want the help.

Alf and Roo are visited by James’ father, David Mayvers, who wishes to speak with Roo. He wants her to sign an agreement that will give two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to Roo’s child if she agrees to never seek contact with their family. Roo is outraged and asks him to leave, but David tells her it was James’ idea. Sensing his daughter’s hurt Alf gives him a helping hand out the door. After speaking with James, Roo gets definitive confirmation that he doesn’t want anything to do with the child. Alf tells her to tear up the contract but Roo hesitates knowing the help the money would be in raising her child. Alf reminds her she needs to make a decision she can live with, and the easy road is not always the right one. Roo and David meet up again and she tells him she doesn’t want his money. Alf is proud of Roo for turning down David’s offer. Both Alf and Leah assure her she’ll have more than enough support when she raises the baby.

Leah tells Irene she’s spoken with a lawyer about selling her share of the Diner. Marilyn overhears and is shocked. Irene is still resistant to the idea, but Leah is adamant, she will sell. Irene’s compiling a list with all the reasons for Leah not to sell. Nate is surprised that Leah won’t even meet Irene half way and listen to her. He suggests that Irene step off and allow Leah some space to think.

Leah hears that Irene will be leaving the bay for a break and seeks her out. She assumes she’s leaving because of her decision to sell. Irene tells her she thinks they could both do with some space. Leah, relentless, says they still need to talk about the sale, and Irene tells her she needs to gather her thoughts if Leah can give her a week or two to make a decision. Irene gives a letter to Leah, who is hesitant to take it, feeling as though everything has been said. Irene tells her it hasn’t, and leaves.

Leah and VJ talk about Irene leaving. Leah, thinks it’s a good idea. VJ still isn’t convinced his mother is making the right decision but Leah is sure. Alf has a coughing fit in the kitchen and VJ and Leah think he should see a doctor, but he is adamant it’s just a cold.

Roo is driving to Yabbie Creek but is hit with severe abdominal pains. She pulls over and gets out of the car but is overwhelmed with pain. Unable to reach her phone to call for help Roo looks over to the road but there’s no one around.
