Extended Summary
With Billie well enough to be discharged from hospital, Nate stresses the importance of telling VJ he isn’t the baby’s father as soon as possible – the longer she puts it off, the harder it’ll be. The secret threatens to overwhelm her when she arrives home the next day, and she takes VJ upstairs to speak alone. But when they enter the bedroom, she finds that VJ has set the room up perfectly for the baby, and she can’t bring herself to ruin the fantasy. Later, Phoebe notices something’s up with Billie, but she forces a smile and covers.
Back at the hospital, Nate learns from Dr Benson that Billie’s conception date has been changed on the computer system. Nate visits Billie and asks her how she did it, but she denies the charge. Billie tries to kick Nate out but when he won’t leave, she admits she changed it. Nate’s disgusted – she’s protecting herself, and taking advantage of VJ and his family. He thinks it’s time everyone knew the truth, and walks out into the main house.
After hooking up again, Kat and Ash find it hard to hide the truth from Phoebe and Billie. Kat knows that if Sergeant McCarthy learns what happened, she’ll lose her job. Phoebe suggests she make sure that Ash knows nobody else can find out. But when Kat meets up to tell him, it’s not long before they’re back in bed together. Kat admits that she loves Ash – and he feels the same. As long as no-one finds out they’re back together while she’s on probation at work, they’ll be able to keep seeing each other. Ash agrees to keep their secret. Later, when Kat sees Phoebe again, she tells her that Ash knows nothing can happen between them again now. Phoebe buys the lie and Kat leaves, convinced she’s doing the right thing.
A well-dressed Zac runs into Nate in the Surf Club after a school fundraising meeting at Salt. Nate asks how Billie is, reminding Zac that he was supposed to be there when she got home. He heads off, promising to let Nate know about Billie. Leah gets a text from Zac apologising, but she understands that his head is in his work at the moment. When they meet back at home, Leah points out that Zac’s been missing out on a lot of things, and he admits he’s struggling to get his work/life balance right. But when Leah asks him how the meeting went, he tells her it was about trying to lock in staff for next year. Leah doesn’t suspect anything – but why is he lying to her?
