Extended Summary

Called to the hospital by Nate, Hannah faces an anxious wait for her test results. Trying to do the right thing Chris calls Oscar and Evelyn who arrive, full of concern. When Hannah learns they haven’t yet got their results, her fears about her own results amplify. She tries to stay strong, sharing in Oscar and Evelyn’s relief when they learn they tested negative to the cancer gene. But her joy is short lived when Nate confirms her fears – Hannah has tested positive and has a high risk of getting cancer.

Nate tries to discuss Hannah’s options and organise further counselling, but Hannah is already shutting down. She leaves the hospital as quickly as she can. Chris promises Nate and the twins he’ll look after Hannah. But as the couple disappear into the lift, Oscar and Evelyn realise Hannah’s behaving the same way she did after the bus crash and pushing people away.

Oscar and Evelyn have conflicted feelings over the results – although relieved neither of them carry the cancer gene, they feel guilty and scared for Hannah. Having watched their mother die of cancer neither can handle the thought of losing Hannah as well. They make a pact to support her and are relieved she has Chris to help her too.

But Chris is having a hard time of reaching Hannah. His attempts to get her to open up fail and Hannah ends up asking him to leave. Chris talks to Nate about how inadequate he feels and how he worries he’s not strong enough to help Hannah through this. Evelyn talks to Hannah, getting worked up as she points out although they’re not the results she wanted, at least Hannah has a chance to do something. Unlike her mother, Hannah’s sister, Hannah can take action to beat this. Wasn’t that the point of getting tested?

Hannah remains circumspect. When Chris returns, pledging his support and promising to stick with her through this, it reminds Hannah of how much has changed. She tries to break things off with him – to set him free. When Chris won’t listen, Hannah’s forced to cut him down in the cruellest of ways.

Meanwhile, Kyle continues to grapple over how to get the money Dave has demanded from him. A phone call from Isla makes it clear Kyle is running out of time. Dave wants his money today. Desperation growing, Kyle takes out the insurance papers from Angelo’s again. Feeling he has no choice he decides to burn down Angelo’s to claim the insurance money. But it’s not an easy decision and Kyle is on edge. When Ricky arrives to go with Kyle to the solicitor’s, he snaps at her. His behaviour has Ricky suspicious, but she’s too busy dealing with Casey and organising the sale of the gym to pursue it. It’s Billie, who comes to check on Kyle and accidentally finds the concealed kerosene and matches, who realises what he’s planning.

After her own experience of being trapped in a fire, Billie can’t believe Kyle would intentionally set a fire, telling him all the reasons why this is wrong. What she says makes sense to Kyle, but he doesn’t have a choice and fears Dave will kill him if he doesn’t come up with the money. Billie points out there’s another option – one too obvious for Kyle to see – he can go to the police. Kyle’s allergic to the idea. Billie knows that’s the Braxton in him talking. She thinks it’s time Kyle put that behind him and handle this the right way. Taking her advice on board an apprehensive Kyle tentatively enters the police station, hoping like anything he’s doing the right thing.

Matt and Maddie continue to drive everyone crazy with their bickering. But when Matt makes an offhanded comment about Hannah’s test results, he oversteps the mark. Realising he’s upset Maddy they have heartfelt conversation about Maddy’s fears for her future and the possibility of her own cancer returning. Matt reassures her no one knows what’s waiting around the corner and suggests they need to make the most of every day.
