Extended Summary
Charlotte stands over Trystan’s body, then hears a car coming. Making a snap decision she runs out, shouting for the car to stop. It’s Irene and she calls triple zero. When the emergency services arrive, Kat interviews Charlotte, who gives a convincing story about the man just stepping out in front of her car. When they find out the victim’s name, Kat immediately realises that Charlotte knew him, and starts to feel that something isn’t right. At the hospital Kat finds out from Nate that Trystan’s in a critical condition, so she won’t be able to speak to him. Kat’s suspicions heighten when Nate says that he’d expect Trystan’s injuries to be consistent with a side impact, and yet he was hit front on. At the station Kat interviews Charlotte again, commenting on what a coincidence it is that Trystan harassed Charlotte, then was found badly beaten, Hunter went missing, then Charlotte accidentally runs Trystan over… Charlotte agrees that it is. When they’re finished Kyle picks Charlotte up and after they’ve left, Emerson asks Kat how the interview went. When Kat says she thinks Charlotte hit Trystan on purpose Emerson, tells her to prove it. As Kyle and Charlotte walk into her apartment, she’s telling Kyle the same thing that she told Kat, but he’s not buying it. He tells her to trust him and she tells him the truth about Trystan’s threats, and that he said he’d kill Hunter. Kyle tells her to stick to her story but Charlotte is scared, saying Kat is suspicious. Kyle comforts her.
Matt, Maddy and Oscar are studying before their last day of exams. They talk about going to a party to celebrate then decide that they’d rather not, given that Josh is still lying in hospital. There’s a moment between Maddy and Matt, and thinking that Matt might misinterpret it as encouragement, Maddy heads to the couch to read.
Ash and Phoebe are at the diner, and Phoebe’s worrying about not hearing from Denny. John’s at another table writing to Marilyn on his laptop, and Phoebe asks him to check if Marilyn’s going to meet up with Denny, as they’re both in Europe. Ash scares Phoebe by talking about how much pressure there is on teachers.
The next day Maddy, Matt and Oscar are on their way to their final exams, Oscar muttering facts to himself. He goes to get juices for them and Matt turns to Maddy, asking what’s wrong. She says she’s just tired but Matt’s not buying it, blaming himself for telling her how he feels about her, but Maddy insists it’s not that, she just wants to finish the exams.
Matt walks with Maddy after the exam, celebrating loudly until he sees that Maddy’s still feeling down. He makes her confess that she’s feeling sick, like the way that she did when she had cancer. They go straight to the hospital and after some tests, Nate assures Maddy that she’s still in remission, she’s just iron deficient and needs to look after herself. Caught up in the relief, Matt takes Maddy’s hand and neither of them thinks anything of it until after Nate walks away, quickly letting go. Kat enters and asks Nate about Trystan’s condition. She goes straight to see Charlotte, breaking the news that Trystan died. Charlotte knows that Kat doesn’t believe her, but is sure that she can’t prove anything, so taunts her, while giving her nothing she can use. Kat leaves, her resolve to prove Charlotte’s guilt growing even stronger. Kat goes to try and get some information about Charlotte’s connection with Trystan from Kyle, but he covers for her. Kat’s disappointed and warns Kyle off Charlotte.
Oscar joins a quiet Maddy and Matt, happy that the exams are over. He’s stopped in his tracks when Maddy tells him she was at the hospital, but she quickly reassures him that she’s fine. Oscar’s relieved and wishes he could have gone with her but Maddy tells him Matt was there, and Oscar thanks him, compounding Matt’s guilt over his feelings for Maddy. Maddy changes the subject, suggesting they celebrate in some way, and they end up toasting marshmallows over the campfire. Oscar goes out of his way to thank Matt, unwittingly making the other two feel very awkward. Desperate to escape the situation, Matt goes to the house to check on the food. Maddy asks Oscar for a kiss and then he also goes to the house to get more marshmallows. At the house Matt offers to help Roo, who’s preparing food and although she says no he wants to stay, and Roo correctly guesses he’s struggling over his feelings for Maddy. She asks how he’s coping and after realising that Maddy told Roo the whole thing, he tells her he wishes he had kept his mouth shut. Roo is sympathetic and they talk about how hard it is to turn off having feelings for someone. Unbeknownst to them, Oscar has overheard everything and is stunned, hurt by the betrayal.
