Extended Summary

Denny is on the beach looking at the note she found – “Ash lied! Brax is alive” – when Kat comes up, causing Denny to quickly hide the note.

Kat reveals that Nate just broke up with her – or, rather, ‘they’re on a break’ – but Kat thinks it’s the same thing. Denny then suggests Kat doesn’t have to agree to this break, telling her that if she wants to be with him she should fight for him. An enthused Kat heads off, buoyed by Denny’s words. She turns up at Nate’s and offers to go with him to the hearing, to explain Kyle’s history with the police and his reluctance to go to the hospital. Nate thanks her, but tells her that this is something he has to do on his own.

Ricky has gone to check on Kyle but his spirits are low. Ricky tries to pick him up, telling him help might be just around the corner. Kyle asks if they’ve found a match for the kidney donation and Ricky nods – it’s Ash. Later as Ricky and Nate are talking, James walks past and tells Nate they’ll call him in shortly – so Ricky asks what’s up. Nate admits he has to talk to the Head of ED about what happened with Kyle. Ricky’s annoyed that he didn’t tell her; this isn’t even his fault! Nate says he had a duty of care, as Kat keeps reminding him.

Later, In Nate’s review, the head of ED and James both question Nate about what happened with Kyle. They tell him that he should have monitored Kyle more closely after removing the stitches – his condition was treatable and now Kyle needs a transplant! Nate understands he should have taken it more seriously, but later as he and Ricky wait outside for the verdict, Ricky gets agitated, unable to believe this is happening to Nate.

A riled riled up Ricky storms into the office and lectures the pair on how amazing Nate is and how many lives he’s saved. She soon realises she’s overstepped the mark and leaves, while the doctors ask Nate to stay. They deliver the bad news: Nate is being suspended for 4 weeks.

Later, the pair bump into each other again, and Ricky apologises for embarrassing Nate in front of his bosses but Nate brushes it off. He tells her he’s been suspended and she’s sorry. He then thanks her for the words she said about him; it was very kind. There’s another moment between them but Ricky breaks it and rushes off. When Nate’s back at home, Kat arrives to check on him after the hearing and he tells her he got suspended. Kat says she just wants to support him; she’s sorry he had to do this alone. He mentions that Ricky was there to defend him, although he didn’t ask her to. Kat lets that go and says she came over to say she doesn’t want to take a break from their relationship. She offers to take some time off work and they go away together, to work out what they want. Nate is hesitant but agrees, much to Kat’s relief.

Meanwhile, Ash has been getting all the information from James regarding donating his kidney. James lays out all the risks involved but Ash seems to have already made his mind up: he’s going through with it. James thinks it’s a decision that shouldn’t be rushed into and Phoebe agrees, however Ash says he understands the risks but wants to go ahead with it.

Later, Phoebe is concerned that Ash isn’t fully taking in how big of a deal the transplant is. Ash assures her he is, but what James told them has really hit home for her. What if his other kidney fails later on, or something else happens to him? Ash says he can handle it but Phoebe is getting emotional. She needs Ash and she doesn’t want him to do the transplant. Ash tells her that he wants to do this for Kyle. Phoebe wishes he wasn’t the match but Ash is happy it’s him. Brax can’t be here for his family but Ash is glad he can be, and save Kyle’s life.

On the eve of the transplant, Kyle is still surprised that it’s all happening so quickly. He asks Ash if he’s just doing this to make Phoebe happy. Ash assures him that he wants to do this. Kyle looks him in the eye and thanks him. The next morning, the boys are prepped for surgery and Kyle gives Ash one last chance to bail but he’s not backing out. As they get wheeled off to the operation room, Ricky and Phoebe watch on with anxious fear.

Denny and Ash meet up – Denny believes that Ricky deserves to know about Brax, but Ash says it doesn’t matter now that he’s a match for Kyle’s kidney – they don’t need to do anything. It’s been months nows and Ricky’s finally moving on; what good would it do her to know? Denny says it’s not their decision to make, and despite Ash’s pleas, she tells him that if he won’t say anything, she will.

Denny gets a text from Ash telling her to trust him. Soon after, Ricky and Denny talk, and Ricky brings up the moment she told Denny about things between her and Nate, and admits she lied, she does have feelings for Nate! She explains how she never thought her life would turn out like this – a single mum. She misses Brax everyday, but she feels free now. She wonders if she knew everything she does now, would she have ever chosen Brax over Nate? She needs to make smart decisions from now on, with her head not her heart. As Ricky heads home, Denny pulls the note about Brax from her pocket. She tears it up. She send Ash a text “the secret is safe”.
