Extended Summary

Roo makes Alf promise to be on his best behaviour at dinner with James. Alf tells Roo to relax, he’ll be good. Later on, walking to Irene’s with James Roo tries to coach him on how to treat each person who will be at dinner but he reassures her that it will be fine. They arrive and everything goes well until Alf notices a discrepancy with James’ dates, and cross questions him. Even after dinner Alf continues to try and catch James out but Roo takes Alf aside and asks him to stop embarrassing them. Alf makes an effort and things continue more peacefully but when James has to leave early Alf tells the others that he still isn’t sure about James. Roo overhears and leaves, upset.

Phoebe goes to see Ash. When no-one answers the door Ricky comes out of the flat to find a tearful Phoebe who says it’s all a mess and cries in Ricky’s arms. Inside the flat Phoebe tells Ricky about the pregnancy. Ricky tells her not to beat herself up about it and looks angry when Phoebe tells her how Ash barely reacted when she told him. Ricky goes round to give Ash a piece of her mind, telling him in no uncertain terms that he has to support the woman he loves. Meanwhile Phoebe is looking after Casey and Ash and Ricky walk in to find her holding him. Ash apologises to Phoebe for how he reacted, saying that everything was perfect and he didn’t know how to deal with this huge new issue. Phoebe says she feels the same but when Ash asks if that indicates that she doesn’t plan to keep the baby she tells him she’s unsure now that she’s actually in the situation. Ash tells her that he’ll support her whatever happens. Later on Ricky checks on Phoebe and Ash, who are cuddled up on the couch. After telling them she is there for support too, she pushes Phoebe to tell Kyle, saying he has a right to know. Phoebe isn’t keen but eventually agrees.

The next morning Alf apologises and Roo gets upset, worried that she may not have many relationship chances left being in her late forties. Alf tells her he just wants her to be happy and they embrace, on good terms again.

Phoebe and Ash are in a good place again but wondering why Kyle isn’t answering Phoebe’s calls. They find Ricky who’s on the phone and she tells them ‘it’s Kyle’ and we’re left wondering what has happened to him.

Roo and James sit on the pier, talking about relationships and family, James says he’s not there for her friends or family, he’s there for her. They kiss, their feelings intensifying. They go into the diner and are invited to sit with Alf, Marilyn and John. James asks to hear some of John’s Navy stories and while Marilyn protests, Roo ask James what he’s doing. He answers that he’s proving nothing can scare him off. Out on Roo, besotted.

Irene see Ash with baby Casey and asks what’s wrong. He tells her he’s taken Ricky and Phoebe to the airport, who are on their way to Melbourne to see Kyle who’s in hospital. Arriving at the hospital they rush into his room, to find him unconscious and badly beaten…
