Extended Summary

Hannah is chatting with mystery man, Sean, that she ran into at the hospital. It’s been 2 or 3 years since they’ve seen each other. Sean asks if they can catch up for a coffee but Hannah makes a lame excuse and heads off to do paperwork. Later after Hannah’s clocked off, Sean turns up at her doorstep. What’s he doing here? Oscar interrupts to say hi, clearly knowing who this is. To avoid questions, Hannah tells Sean they should go for a coffee. Maddy asks Oscar who that was – it’s Hannah’s ex. Walking along the beach, Sean asks Hannah about how the twins came to live with her and she asks him how long he’s been back in Australia. Sean admits he’s finally decided to stop the constant jet setting and is looking to put down some roots. Hannah is surprised hearing him say that. Sean convinces Hannah to spend a little longer with him, having a meal together. They run into Evie at the diner and she’s excited to see Sean again. Hannah gets uncomfortable, which Sean notices. He admits that he feels strange being around Hannah again too, but can’t they just enjoy a meal together? Hannah agrees.

It’s Josh’s 18th birthday and Evie’s planned a surprise party. She tells Josh that Sean, along with Hannah, helped her & Oscar a lot when their mum was sick. She organises with Josh that they should just watch a DVD at his place tonight & relax, hiding the party plans. She agrees to meet him back at his place in an hour. As she leaves, Josh checks his voicemail – there’s a message to call his mum in prison.

Maddy is studying hard after the good news about her treatment working. Roo reminds her that she still shouldn’t be pushing it too hard. Maddy gets a text from Oscar signed off with an X. She wonders what it means, as they have been getting a lot closer lately. Maddy heads over to Oscar’s to help out with the party preparations. Oscar’s roped her in to baking a cake for Josh from scratch. They get to talking and Maddy brings up that she feels like she can talk to Oscar about anything – She’s glad their break up didn’t ruin their friendship. Oscar agrees, thinking they’re even closer now than before. Maddy ventures to see if Oscar regrets breaking up but Oscar is certain they wouldn’t have worked. Maddy seems to be hiding disappointment. Later Maddy tells Roo that the X meant nothing, Oscar just wants to be friends. Roo comforts her but Maddy says she’s just going to focus on the things she does have, not the things she doesn’t.

After their meal Sean is asking Hannah about the bus crash; he had no idea she was in the bus as well as Leah. He asks if Hannah had anyone to lean on during that difficult time and she confidently says she did. Sean admits he’s thought about Hannah a lot since their split and asks if she’s thought about him? She tells him she’s in a relationship now, and he’s a good guy. She says goodbye and leaves.

Alf’s psychologist Maria comes over for another session. Alf has been writing stuff down in a diary, as requested, about his memories. Maria asks Alf what it felt like coming back from Vietnam, not being treated like a hero, like the returned veterans of World War I & II were. Alf says it doesn’t bother him, but believes the soldiers that didn’t return deserved more respect. Maria asks why he deserves differently if he did fought the same war as them? Maria brings up Alf’s relationship with his son, Duncan, and asks if he wishes things would change between them. Alf admits he does but there’s no chance of a reconciliation there. They move on to talk about a particularly bad night that Alf has written down – where he lost 12 men. When Maria asks how it makes him feel he’s angry and emotional, he knows that could have been him and how lucky he is to be alive. Maria asks if he feels guilty…but it’s too much for Alf. He walks out, crumbling. Later that night Alf has been distant and doesn’t want any dinner. Roo asks what’s the matter and Alf starts having what looks like an anxiety attack. But he manages to ask Roo to give him a minute to get it under control.

The twins are gearing up for Josh’s party but first ask Hannah what the goss is with Sean. Hannah tries to change the subject but they don’t give up. She gets a bit snappy and says they need to talk about something else – clearly Sean’s return has rattled her. At the party, Evie is so excited about how it’s turned out; Maddy & Oscar can’t believe the effort she’s put in. But then, Josh turns up too early and the surprise is slightly ruined as everyone isn’t there yet. Evie apologises but is happy he’s here. Josh says he told her he didn’t want to make a big deal about it but Evie insists it’s just a party. Josh gets angry and firmly tells her he’s not interested, then storms out. What’s up with Josh?
