Sasha is angry when she finds out that Matt has decided to go back to school. Chris sets his heart on becoming a lifesaver, much to John’s chagrin. Zac blows up at Irene when she tries to help him.
Extended Summary
It’s a new school year, but with Hannah facing the slow road to recovery, Evelyn is in low spirits. Josh tries to cheer her up, but nothing seems to work. Matt suggests Josh use his creativity to try to do something nice for her. Evelyn finally tells Zac about the seriousness of Hannah’s injuries. After Zac blows up at Matt and Spencer in the Diner, Irene starts to worry about how Zac is coping with VJ at home. Irene comes around to give them some food and to write a cheque to help him care for VJ. Zac reacts with hostility, imploring Irene to leave him alone. Recognising his pain, Irene leaves, but urges Zac to call her if he ever needs her.
Chris is at a loose-end with Spencer returning to school for the year. After bugging Irene, he gets the idea of contributing to the community. He goes to John and asks him if he can be a volunteer surf life saver. John reluctantly agrees to give him a one-day trial. Chris completes a long list of chores for John, including polishing the Polaris. Finally, John admits to Chris that anyone can volunteer at the Surf Club – there is no ‘trial period’. John entrusts Chris to lock up the Surf Club, handing him the keys. After Chris locks up, Josh comes creeping towards the Surf Club with a backpack full of spray paint. But what has he got planned?
Sasha is upset when she learns from Irene that Matt has returned to school to repeat Year Twelve. When Matt shows up to meet her in his school uniform, Sasha is still angry. She tells him that Matt should’ve told her he’d made this decision. She’ll have to reassess all her plans for their future as they’ll no longer be able to live together in the city. Spencer is also disappointed to hear that Matt Page will be in his class this year. They begin to antagonise each other immediately. Will they ever be able to see eye to eye?
