Kit’s past catches up with her when an old flame comes to the Bay. Cassie’s decision to return to the Bay has shocking consequences.
Extended Summary
Sally, Brad, Alf and Cassie are discussing how Ric’s going in prison. They still haven’t found who planted the drugs in his cell, but they’re all certain it’s Johnny. Cassie is soon to head back to the city. Sal wishes she could stay, they really miss her. Cassie then reveals that she misses them all dreadfully too, which is why she’s made the decision to move back to Summer Bay! There’s surprise all round… Cass explains she’s been thinking about it for awhile now, but she still hasn’t told Macca. Sally shares an uncertain look with Brad as Cass explains that they can make their relationship work with him still in the city. But Sal has her doubts about this… Back in the city, Macca’s cleaning the flat when Cassie arrives home. He tries to make a good impression – determined for her to feel comfortable in their place. He’s bought her flowers and made the place look nice – she appreciates it, but there’s something she needs to tell him. He’s knocked for six when she reveals she wants to return to the Bay, to live. Macca takes it personally, despite her reassurances that she still loves him, but she misses her family and friends. She wants to stay with him, long distance – they can make it work. He isn’t so sure. He’s shattered and feels like she’s punishing him for his past mistakes. She isn’t – that’s in the past and it’ll be difficult, but they’ll make things work. Cassie grabs her bag, telling Macca she loves him. She’ll see him on the weekend. Cassie meets up with Sally and explains that Macca was disappointed, but they’ll work through it. Sally isn’t entirely convinced. Macca drives to the Bay to try and convince Cassie that she should come back to the city – he needs her. But she’s adamant – he pulls away annoyed, she knows he can’t leave the city, that’s where the decent jobs are!
He gets riled up and grabs her, she manages to pull free, but then he grabs her again and WHACK! He’s backhanded her across the cheek! They’re both stunned – it’s happened again. He backs away and leaves without another word.
Sally, Brad and Alf soon return home and without needing to ask, Sally sees Cassie’s face. She knows Macca’s been here. Cassie goes to the unit – it’s cleared out. She packs her things, still in shock and finds a letter from Macca. It’s heartfelt, and he’s acknowledged that she can do better than him and he’s sorry. Finally it sinks it. She and Macca are truly over.
Rachel and Nurse Julie are getting to know a new intern, James. He explains that a friend of his used to rave about the Bay, so he decided to apply for the job. Then Kit enters and her eyes land on James. She’s shocked to seem him he’s shocked to see that she’s pregnant! Overwhelmed, Kit rushes out the door and James follows close behind. He chases Kit down the beach and finally catches her. She says it isn’t how it looks – she fell pregnant just before they got together, but didn’t realise until after – then James went to Broken Hill for prac, and it seemed easier for Kit to end their relationship and not tell him about her pregnancy. Kit assures him the baby isn’t his and she’s sorry for everything – but it seemed easier. James is hurt – he really cared for Kit and would’ve preferred that she told him upfront than break up with him suddenly then disappear. There’s nothing more to say and a shell-shocked Kit walks away. James is left reeling. He heads back to the Surf Club. Rachel learn that James is Kit’s ex and Rachel tells Kim so he pays Kit a visit to comfort her – this has really knocked her around. She tells Kim the story of how she fell in love with James really quickly – it was a short but intense relationship. She wants to at least be friends with the guy… James then appears at the door – and meets Kim. The pieces fall into place for James – Kim is Rachel’s husband and he’s the baby’s dad. Woah! Kim leaves them to it and James reveals that he’s not angry for what she did. And he still loves her and wants to pick up from where they left off. Kit’s shocked – she’s about to have a baby and doesn’t think it’ll work out. Kim talks to Kit about James – he can see she really likes this guy and lets her know she doesn’t need to push him away – what’ve you got to lose? She finds him and lets James know that she doesn’t want to jump right into the deep end, but… He’s thrilled – they’ll work it out, okay?
That night Alf gets a call from the prison and it’s not good news. It’s Ric. Something terrible has happened…
