Jett encourages John to seek professional help. Will Hunter break the difficult truth to Zac? VJ struggles to come to terms with losing custody of Luc.
Extended Summary
John enthusiastically hugs Jett and looks him over, saying he’s officer material. Jett cuts the gushing reunion short slightly by explaining that Alf rang him and told him that John and Marilyn have separated. He dryly asks what John did to upset her. In their room at the beach house, Olivia is assuming that Hunter is going to refuse Zac’s offer. She thinks that Hunter doesn’t want to go, especially since he hasn’t spoken to his grandma since Charlotte died. Hunter tries to sell the idea to her however and is annoyed that she keeps giving him contradictory advice. Hunter says Zac needs him and Olivia angrily retorts that Zac isn’t even his father. She instantly regrets it but Hunter looks hurt and leaves.
John has filled Jett in on the reason for the split. Jett, who is referring to Marilyn as Mum, is aghast at the stance she’s taken but John says that she’s been through a lot and he needs to show her that he’s still the same person. They head round there, where Marilyn is even more enthused to see Jett than John was, hugging him to the point that he comments she’s throttling him. John dampens the mood a bit by saying Alf told Jett about their troubles. Marilyn says they’re working through it and John cuts short Jett’s attempt to question her. Marilyn readily agrees to Jett staying there and offers him some rock melon. Jett invites John to join them but John declines.
Next morning, Hunter and Olivia are on the beach together. Olivia apologises for her comment the previous night and says she’s with Hunter whatever he does. Hunter asks if she’d go with him to Robertson but Olivia asks Hunter if he’d even be considering the move if he hadn’t had the DNA test done. Hunter admits he doesn’t really want to go. He meets Zac at the Diner and tells him that he can’t leave, since he finally feels settled in Summer Bay. He feels guilty however when Zac says that he’ll turn down the job in that case, since he doesn’t want to leave Hunter behind.
Marilyn has set up a breakfast banquet for Jett and asks if she’s missed anything. Jett says she has: John. He asks why she’s pushing him away since he only lit the fires because he was ill. Marilyn says she wants the old John back but isn’t convinced he was even real. Jett insists John is still one of the good guys. At the caravan park house, Ash turns up and invites VJ to come for a surf with him, saying Kat’s looking after Luc. VJ is thrown somewhat, since he and Ash haven’t hung out since the custody battle. Ash says VJ is still important but VJ says he has to go to school anyway. After VJ has gone, Alf tells Ash that he hasn’t been the same since Ash went for custody and advises him to give VJ a wide berth.
VJ and Jett run into each other at the surf club and VJ is surprised to see him back in town. Jett teases VJ about wagging school and VJ explains he had free periods. Jett says he was going to drop by to see VJ with Luc and VJ admits she isn’t living with him anyone. Meanwhile, John shows up at the Palmer house to collect Jett. Marilyn, who is a bit teary, says he’s a bit late. She says they had a disagreement and Jett’s disappointed in her.
VJ has filled Jett in on how he lost custody of Luc. Jett notes he was stabbed in the back and checks it’s only temporary. VJ admits that not having to look after Luc hasn’t been so bad. Jett asks if he wants Luc back. VJ says part of him does but the other part just wants his life back. Jett suggests Billie would want him to be happy. VJ leaves as John turns up and has a go at Jett for upsetting Marilyn, repeatedly saying it’s complicated. Jett asks why he’s just taking it instead of fighting. John says that there might not be anything to fight for. VJ heads down the beach to the spot where Billie died, still marked by memorial notes on the post. He sits and cries. Ash watches him from the distance.
Hunter is updating Olivia at the Diner; he feels guilty at how much Zac is giving up for a relationship that isn’t even real. Zac approaches them and says he’s turning down the job. Hunter reminds him that he needed a fresh start and to get away from Leah but Zac shrugs off the fact, claiming he can stick it out. Hunter tries to get him to take the job for himself. Later, Hunter continues to ponder the dilemma back home. Olivia guides him through the issue, asking if Zac might change his mind. Hunter says he wouldn’t and is forced to accept her conclusion that he needs to tell Zac the truth.
Jett tries to convince John that there’s a way back but John isn’t sure he deserves Marilyn. He’s worried that she’s right and the doctors are wrong, that the tumour just brought something out that was already there and he’s not in control. Jett suggests that if he really believes that then he might need professional help. Jett heads back to the Palmer house where he apologises to Marilyn for upsetting her. John turns up and tells them that he’s decided to see a therapist.
Ash goes to see VJ, asking about what he saw before. VJ dismisses the idea of Ash caring but when pushed admits that he feels like he can’t win: Part of him wants to fight for custody and be the dad to Luc that he promised Billie he’d be, the other part wants to let her go. He says he feels like a horrible person. Ash says that the happiest he ever saw Billie was when she was with VJ and he probably knew her better than Ash did. He says Billie would want VJ to be happy and that he’ll always be a part of Luc’s life whatever happens.
Zac meets Hunter on the beach as Hunter has requested. Hunter changes his mind and tries to leave but Zac asks him what it was he wanted to tell him. Hunter says that he lied: He did look at the DNA results and Zac isn’t his father.
