Stefan Posted May 19, 2006 Report Share Posted May 19, 2006 Part 1 Irene came down the stairs. She looked flustered. “Has anyone seen my other shoe?” She said. Belle appeared from the other side of the couch. “I think I saw it under the table” She said, grinning. Irene moved to the table and bent down to find her shoe. The phone rang. “Belle can you get that for me” Irene said as she stood up with her shoe. Belle got up from the couch and answered the phone. “Hello?” Belle paused for a moment. “Yes, sure I’ll get her, what was you name sorry?” Belle moved the phone over to Irene. “Who is it?” Irene asked. Belle looked at her. “They didn’t tell me...” Irene held the phone up to her ear. “Hello?” “Who is this? I can’t hear you” Irene said. Irene paused. A look of horror and surprise appeared on her face as she fell back, clearly she had fainted. Ever since Jack took Peters job, Martha had barely seen him. He was always working or doing some job that would have him away at certain times of the week. She felt separated from him, as if they didn’t know each other anymore. Martha sat on the couch watching some show. She started to circle the outline of the mug, and she went into a trance. There was a knock at the door. Martha continued to circle the mug. There was another knock. Morag came down from the stairs. “Would it trouble you that much to answer the door?” She said. Martha snapped out of her trance. “What?” She said. “Sorry, Aunty Morag” Morag opened the door. “Yes, officer what can I do for you? Martha got up from the couch and looked at the door. “May I speak to Martha McKenzie?” He said stepping into the house. Martha looked at the officer. She hadn’t seen him before, but the Yabbie Creek Police station had just recruited new officers. So she thought he must be new. Morag looked at Martha. “Is she in any trouble?” Morag asked. The officer looked at Morag.” No. she is not in any trouble, I need to giver her some information” Martha looked at Morag and then back at the officer. “What is it?” “Could we talk in private?” He said. “No, it’s ok. Aunty Morag can hear this.” Martha said, getting worried. “Is this about Jack?” The officer was silent for a moment. Then replied “Yes” Irene sat up in the hospital bed. “I’m fine” She said. Barry, Tasha, Robbie and Belle all surrounded her bed. “Who was on the phone Irene?” Belle asked Robbie looked at Belle. “What do you mean who was on the phone?” “Before Irene fainted she got a phone call” Belle said. Tasha looked at Belle then at Irene. “Who was it? Is there bad news?” Tasha asked.
