Breakfast is a Good Start to Red Cross Calling

AAP MediaNet Press Releases

27 February 2006

NSW Premier Morris Iemma will be joined today in Sydney by actresses Lynne McRanger (Home & Away) and Alexandra Davies (All Saints), newsreader Chris Bath and Parramatta Eels Captain Nathan Cayless to celebrate the beginning of Red Cross Calling.

Red Cross Calling is Australia's largest volunteer and fundraising effort, collecting vital funds for its 23 local community services throughout NSW.

Celebrities, volunteers and supporters will attend breakfast at a giant symbolic Red Cross table in the forecourt of Customs House at Circular Quay this morning. The breakfast is reflective of the Good Start Breakfast Club which feeds 350,000 breakfasts annually to children nationally who may otherwise go hungry.

Other local community services Australian Red Cross funds through Red Cross Calling range from ensuring the daily safety of frail and elderly people through Telecross to teaching teens about alcohol and other drug related emergencies through Save-A-Mate.

This year Australian Red Cross hopes to have 40,000 volunteers door knock to help raise $2.3 million in NSW. The money raised in NSW stays in NSW to help local communities.

"The success of the next month will be absolutely crucial for the ongoing operation of Australian Red Cross services in NSW. I appeal to all NSW people to continue the wonderful support they have shown in the past and give generously when an identified Red Cross Calling collector knocks on their door during March," said Michael Lynch, Executive Director, Australian Red Cross NSW.

"Our supporters at the launch today will be from different walks of life - from politicians and celebrities to our volunteers. It's an apt way to launch Red Cross Calling as it's all about the community coming together to help those vulnerable in our society."

NSW residents can donate via phone by calling 1800 811 700, or online at www.redcross.org.au . All donations over $2 are tax deductible. Details of Australian Red Cross work in New South Wales and across Australia are available on their website http://www.redcross.org.au/NSW
