51-61

If you’ve got five points, it means you might be someone’s favourite character. But if you are, no-one else voted for you. And sneaking in at the beginning of this update is the first of our big hitters with six points, which means they definitely had more than one person vote for them.

51. Gina Austin/Palmer (6 points) ▲30

Played by Sonia Todd
Last time round, Gina was languishing in the lower reaches of the poll. She’s a bit higher this time, possibly down to having a memorable death. After easing into the show by making regular visits to her family, Gina ended up as the local principal when the previous incumbent went on holiday in the Bermuda Triangle, struck a blow for late-blossoming relationships by marrying John Palmer and brought Jett into our lives.

52. Duncan Stewart (5 points) ▼24

Played by Allana Ellis, Lewis Devaney & Brendan McKensy
Decades before VJ, this 1989 birth came back from a stint in hospital having gained a new face, several inches of height and a bad attitude, and started high school when he should only have been about nine years old. After a checkered career when he seemed to switch between being good and bad on a monthly basis, he was last reported to be having a Vegas wedding to…someone.

52= Finlay Roberts (5 points) ◄RETURN

Played by Tina Thomsen
Fin has got a few more mentions in recent years than her younger brother, but her lack of visits to see her old ma hasn’t earned her much popularity amongst recent viewers. But some much needed 7Two exposure, where she’s currently in an age group of her own after everyone else in her year left within about six months, has seen her pick up a few points.

52= Georgina Watson (5 points) ▲38

Played by Jaclyn Albergoni
Georgie disappeared somewhere in the middle of the investigation into Danny Braxton’s shooting, but prior to that she spent four years as pretty much everyone’s favourite cop, pointing out to Jack, Charlie and Angelo that they were all nuts, acting as mentor to trainee officer Xavier and earning some much-deserved sergeant’s stripes.

52= Harry Reynolds (5 points) ◄RETURN

Played by Justin Melvey
Before it became traditional to suspect that every character who left was in witness protection, Harry reversed the trend by coming to Summer Bay in witness protection, which begs the question of how bad the place he was in the first place must have been. After a year and a half as the local cool teacher, he flew away in a seaplane never to be seen again, while his mother kept coming back and ended up marrying Don Fisher.

52= Paris Burnett (5 points) ▲15

Played by Rhett Giles
The Summer Bay High principal who replaced Don Fisher. Twice. His stay in town was short but he managed to become the darling of older women everywhere by becoming Irene’s toy boy and deliver a famous put-down speech to Angie Russell.

52= Sam Marshall (5 points) ◄RETURN

Played by Ryan Clark
One of the few characters to grow from childhood to more or less adulthood on screen without getting recast, Sam got passed around numerous foster families like someone had forgotten to stop the music, had a failed surfing career and rescued a single mother before becoming a carpenter.

52= Sasha Bezmel (5 points) ▼31

Played by Demi Harman
A surprisingly low showing for the show’s resident feisty alternative fashion girl. Maybe it’s because she’s felt like she’s just marking time until her contract’s up since the rest of her family left and she stayed behind with the love of her life, um, what was his name again? But at least she’s made more of an impression than most of the new crowd.

52= Steven Matheson (5 points) ▲15

Played by Adam Willits
The book-smart karate kid of the original fostering line-up who returned as a teacher the following decade and may or may not have ended up marrying one of his students, it’s hard to keep track. One of the once frequent returnees who’s not been seen since Sally left.

52= Tasha Andrews (5 points) ▼18

Played by Isabel Lucas
As out there characters go, you don’t get more out there than spending your first several weeks talking in a made up language before going on nudie runs. Half of one of the show’s most long-serving couples (if you forget about all the break-ups), Tasha went through a gamut of joining a cult, getting pregnant after being raped, suffering post-natal depression and being kidnapped almost as often as Rachel.

52= VJ Patterson (5 points) ▲48

Played by Various Babies, Cooper Scott, Felix Dean & Matt Little
We spent seven years watching Felix Dean age from a child to a young teen…so naturally the role ended up being recast with a guy who looks about a decade older than him. Whether in spite of this or because of it, Leah’s only son has risen from languishing in 100th place with one point last time round to be this poll’s most improved player in terms of position.
