Extended Summary

Dean is coming up from the beach and encounters Colby. He only gives vague answers as to why he came back early and what he’s been doing while Colby comments on how he can’t wait to get his moon boot off. He asks if Dean’s seen Mackenzie, wanting to go look for her, but Dean persuades him not to so he goes to a physio session instead. Dean then sees Ari and Mackenzie arriving in her car; Ari is going for a swim before work. Dean asks Mackenzie what’s going on but she hurries off to Salt. Dean reminds Ari he said he’d sort it and Ari awkwardly says he did. Dean goes up to Salt and Mackenzie admits she and Ari have been hooking up. Dean says she doesn’t know anything about him. Mackenzie says she knows about Ari’s brother dying and Dean selling a cell with him. She says she’s fine with it and it’s just casual.

At the Diner, Leah and Marilyn are working in the kitchen while Justin tries to get Irene to give him another coffee. Irene retorts that he’s already had three and convinces him to let them look after Leah. Leah has prepared a salad and says she’ll make her moussaka soon. Irene is busy serving at the counter and asks Leah to take the food to tables. Marilyn can see Leah’s nervous so does it for her. Outside, Bella approaches Nikau and asks if he’s finished work. Nikau knows she’s been watching him from the balcony and Bella knows he’s been looking at her as well. They decide to go for a smoothie.

Colby is chatting to Dean near the board shop, commenting on how Willow pushed him hard. Dean hopes she hasn’t sacked anyone else. Colby sees Mackenzie and invites her to have a coffee with him but she says she’s in a rush. Dean tells Colby that she’s moved on. Bella and Nikau come in and aren’t too pleased to see Colby’s there. Nikau suggests they go on a proper date, such as to the movies, but they realise they don’t have any money so settle for playing pool. At the Diner, Irene convinces Marilyn to leave at the end of the shift, saying she and Leah can cope. However, more customers start coming in. Leah tells Irene to serve the tables while she works the counter.

Colby is filling in forms at the counter with Dean, wondering when Bella and Nikau became a thing. Dean thinks they work together. Bella comes over and convinces Colby to go somewhere else. She rejoins Nikau and comments that at least he can’t sneak up on them in his moon boot. Outside, Colby sees Mackenzie come up from the beach and is pleased when she smiles…only to realise she’s smiling at Ari, who says a job’s been cancelled and he has the rest of the day off. They decide to do something together.

Back inside, Blake comes over and asks Bella and Nikau if they’re going to vacate the table soon. He recognises Bella as one of Ryder’s friends. Bella quietly suggests to Nikau that they have some fun, saying Blake deserves it. Acting clueless, she suggests to Blake and his friend that they play for the table, saying Nikau’s teaching her and asking if she can hit first. Blake agrees. At the Diner, Leah serves a table while Colby comes in and asks Irene for a takeaway. Leah is awkward when she sees him, saying she’s sorry he got hurt. Colby doesn’t blame her and says he’s heard Douglas is pleading guilty. He thinks it’s just to get a lighter sentence and hopes it doesn’t work.

Mackenzie is in bed in Ari’s van. Ari gets her a glass of water, saying it’s tap water, not bottled. Mackenzie says it might be rough around the edges but it does the trick. Ari joins her in bed. Meanwhile, Dean is on the phone at the flat, apparently to Ziggy about the test results. Colby comes in, accusing Dean of keeping him away from Mackenzie to cover for her. Dean ends the conversation with Ziggy, then says he only just found out about Mackenzie and Ari. Colby wonders why Dean isn’t giving Ari a hard time. Dean says he knows Ari and, when Colby questions him, admits he met him in jail.

Nikau plays a deliberately bad shot with Bella noting they’re in danger of accidentally winning. She deliberately pots the black, losing the game. As Blake and his friend prepare to take the table, she suggests they play again for money. Blake agrees. Nikau only has $5 so Bella hurries off to borrow some from Willow, saying she won’t be able to pay her back if they don’t win. She starts the game again and this time pots a ball on the break. Back at the flat, Dean admits Ari was serving eight years for armed robbery. Colby demands to know why he’ll let someone like that date Mackenzie but didn’t want him doing it. Dean replies that Ari looked out for him in jail and he wouldn’t have been there if not for Colby, and only six months before Colby started dating Mackenzie they were burying Ross together. He says some mates make you bury a body and others look out for you when you’re in trouble.

Irene has a lot of customers needing service outside so asks Leah to take an order to a customer. The customer says he ordered the Greek salad and asks Leah to change it, calling her “sweetheart”. Leah has a flashback to Douglas giving her orders and calling her the same thing and angrily says the customer has no right to tell her what to do. Irene checks her and Leah apologises and offers to fix it in on the house but the customer calls her crazy and leaves. Later, on the beach, Leah tells Justin that it had been building ever since she saw Colby. She says that trying to push through what happened isn’t working.

Bella pots the black again, this time winning the game. Blake tries to claim the right to win his money back but Bella and Nikau beat a hasty retreat with $50 winnings, helped by Dean turning up. They head to the caravan park house. Bella notes she’s enjoying dating and Nikau is confident that Ryder will lend them his car to go to the movies.

That evening, Colby is outside the surf club and sees Mackenzie and Ari on the balcony. Dean comes past on the phone to Ziggy again and saying he’ll come and see her. Colby tells him he’s going to get beer and a pizza. Dean tries to dissuade him from doing anything stupid. Back at the Diner, Leah tells Irene and Justin that she’s going to do the victim impact statement: It will be painful but she needs to get it out and it’ll help make sure Douglas gets the right sentence.

Colby comes into Salt; Ari is at the bar but Mackenzie intercepts Colby before he gets that far. Colby says he knows about the two of them but still wonders if there’s anything he can do to get her back. Mackenzie is uncomfortable and Ari comes over. He and Colby square up and Mackenzie tells Colby to leave. Ari suggests Colby should go home before he hurts himself. Mackenzie tells Colby to go again and he reluctantly complies.
