Extended Summary

Alf runs into Marilyn who can’t wait to catch up with Roo now she’s back from her trip. Having heard from John that Roo didn’t seem her usual self earlier today, Marilyn wonders if Roo’s still upset about losing her baby. Alf decides to speak about it with Roo again. Leah’s made a feast for Roo’s return dinner. Alf asks Roo what happened with John, and neither Leah nor Alf are convinced by her jetlag excuse. In the morning, Leah and Alf try to get Roo to speak about what’s bothering her. Roo unloads. She feels stupid, she was lonely and aimless overseas. She couldn’t find the only daughter she’s ever going to have and she realised she has nothing to show for her life. She doesn’t feel great about herself. Maz and Irene are concerned to hear from Leah that Roo isn’t doing well. The ladies decide to throw a quiet afternoon tea to make Roo feel better. The ladies welcome Roo home and the four sit down to try to buoy Roo’s spirits. Roo feels like she’s at a crossroads and whichever way she turns, there’s nothing. The ladies try to break down Roo’s life to figure out how they can improve different parts of it. Maybe a career change? But the ladies think Roo is an amazing teacher and so great with kids, it would be a shame to see her leave lecturing. The discussion gives Roo a lot to think about, her spirits perked a bit. The ladies toast themselves, good friends and great minds! When Roo arrives home, Alf notes her spirits have been lifted. The ladies reminded Roo how much she enjoys working with kids and she thinks she might go for her Dip Ed and become a teacher in Summer Bay. It would only take a year. Alf thinks it’s a great idea. They hug, Roo happy to have some direction.

Olivia, Hunter and his grandmother (Peggy) are eating a very silent dinner at home. Hunter puts on an act, surprised his grandmother has shown up and pretending he must have pocket-dialed her when his phone hung up on her earlier. It’s obvious Hunter is holding back, but he offers the spare room to Peggy for the night. In the morning, Hunter blurts out that Zac’s not his real dad. Peggy’s furious. After everything Charlotte did for him, how can Hunter accuse his mother of lying to him about this. She storms out. Hunter and Olivia find Peggy at the bus stop. Peggy thought Hunter had changed, but he’s still the same selfish boy he always was. Charlotte died trying to protect Hunter. Olivia and Hunter are confused, what’s Peggy talking about? Hunter did community service for the fire, everyone knows about that. Peggy asks about the robbery, Charlotte was beside herself with worry about it, crying down the phone to her about Hunter stealing a safe from a café and a woman that had been electrocuted. Hunter’s gobsmacked. Peggy says Charlotte did it all to protect him, she loved Hunter more than anyone and then Hunter ruined her life. Hunter can’t believe his grandmother knows about the robbery and Olivia worries she will go to the police. Hunter doesn’t think she will, it would make her an accessory. Olivia realises she knew everything too and worries she could go to gaol as well! Olivia insists Hunter speak with his grandmother to dissuade her from going to the police about the robbery, but Hunter knows how to play his grandmother, she just needs time to cool off. Olivia’s not convinced. When Hunter leaves, she picks up Hunter’s phone and pulls up Peggy’s details. Olivia meets Peggy at Salt and tries to explain that Hunter has changed. He’s matured. Emotional, Peggy thinks Olivia is just trying to stop her from going to the police, it’s not about reconciling with Hunter at all! She stalks out. Peggy goes to the diner and confronts Hunter, accusing him of being a coward, sending his girlfriend to manipulate her. She storms out again, pushing past Olivia. Angry, Hunter demands to know what Olivia said to Peggy. At home, Olivia apologises for going behind Hunter’s back to Peggy, she thought she could make his gran understand that Hunter’s changed. If Peggy says anything to the police, there’s nothing they can do about it. There’s a knock at the door. It’s the police. Both of them are required to go to the station for questioning.
