Evelyn’s fears threaten to destroy her chance at love. A teenage love triangle spells trouble at the formal. Olivia is forced to question who she wants to be with.
Extended Summary
Evelyn’s horrified as Matt continues dousing the garage fire with an extinguisher. She begs him to get back. Fire fighters arrive and take care of the situation. Evelyn remains severely rattled by the situation.
Heath and Bianca are in a better place now, but Heath has come to the realisation – suggesting they try therapy. He’s made an appointment for tomorrow. Bianca is charmed; he still manages to surprise her.
There’s tension between Olivia and Hunter as she offers him his formal ticket, but he refuses to take it. He’s not going – so why doesn’t Olivia take Mason, instead? Hunter now shows off some photos of other girls from Schoolies last week, to prove that he’s moving on, too. Olivia’s appalled by his lack of class, and is about to leave when Hunter fires a parting shot about Mason, now that he’s revealed to have been part of Witness Protection. Olivia stares at him – what?
Mason confirms to Olivia that yes, it’s true. As Olivia absorbs the fact that Mason and his family have been on the run for the past seven years, Mason admits it’s hard getting used to the fact that his story is now out in the open. But he’s looking forward to gaining some stability in his life now he doesn’t have to be looking over his should the whole time.
Olivia asks Mason if he’ll escort her to the formal. Mason would be delighted – so long as it won’t be a problem with Hunter? Olivia assures him it won’t be. Hunter’s not going, and besides – they’re both moving on with their lives.
The next morning, a teary Evelyn breaks down to Zac, yesterday felt like her worst nightmare about to come true. She thought she was going to lose Matt, and it made her realise there’s no way she’s strong enough to go through the loss of another loved one. She recognises that her reaction wasn’t normal. Zac insists that Evelyn surely doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life alone. Oscar and Hannah would want her to be happy.
Olivia prepares for the formal, but Irene is suspect – if she’s so excited about going with Mason, then why isn’t she jumping for joy? Irene suggests it’s about Hunter. Olivia remains determined to have a good time tonight and move on.
Matt runs into Hunter, and teases him over his Schoolies antics last week (drunkenly professing his love for Olivia etc.). Hunter downplays it, blaming the booze. Hunter claims to be over Olivia, so Matt challenges him to go the formal – prove it to himself.
Heath nervously paces, waiting for Bianca to show up for their therapy session, but she’s delayed by Zac, with a job offer – covering a teacher on maternity leave. Heath is frustrated that she would blow off their therapy session for MacGuire. His bad mood continues into the evening, as Mason arrives to take Olivia out to the formal. Bianca confronts the brooding figure on his moodiness. He’s frustrated because they used to be on the same page, and now they’re not.
Matt arrives at Evelyn’s door, rose in hand, to remind her that she’s supposed to be going to chaperoning the formal with him tonight, and be really into him… and answer his calls. Evelyn is apologetic and together they arrive at the dance. Matt takes her in with wonder. The magic of the moment culminates with him declaring his love for Evelyn. This is too much for her however, and she flees.
Evelyn returns and admits, she’s scared of how much she loves Matt back. She can’t lose him as well. Matt tells her, he doesn’t know what the future holds, but he knows he loves her right now. The two kiss, as Evelyn allows herself to be in love.
Hunter arrives at the formal and immediately locks eyes with Olivia. The chemistry – and love – between them is still clearly evident. He asks her for a dance and she can’t help but say yes. Hunter takes the opportunity to apologise for his actions, for everything. All he wants is her happiness. Mason interrupts the moment, and a confused Olivia hurries off with him. Evelyn finds Olivia afterwards and tells her that Hunter has been pining over her since schoolies. Olivia is shocked to hear this, and looks at Hunter across the room as she grapples with her feelings. Mason spots this. Caught out, Olivia escapes both of them.
Mason finds Olivia on the beach, but before they can talk, Hunter arrives to check on her. It’s a loaded and tense moment between the three. Seeing she’s okay, Hunter backs off, but it’s more than clear to Mason that Olivia still has feelings for Hunter. A frustrated Mason is left feeling like he’s wasting his time and stalks away, leaving a thoroughly confused Olivia…
