Extended Summary

Horrified at what he’s overheard Ash is searching for answers. He begins to question Billie, getting more and more upset before he moves off to find Kat in order to report her assault. Billie stops him and pleads that she doesn’t want him to go to the police. Assuming she’s embarrassed Ash assures her she has nothing to feel ashamed about, but Billie reveals the real truth: VJs not the father of her baby, her rapist is, and she doesn’t want anyone to know. Ash now understands why Billie couldn’t go through with the wedding. Speaking privately with her he asks why she wouldn’t come to him, her brother. She explains that she just wanted to ignore it so it wouldn’t be real. Ash understands but questions whether hers and VJ’s relationship will overcome this hurdle, especially further down the line.

Matt, meanwhile, has taken Evelyn home and is trying to comfort her but all she wants is to see Josh. Trying to cover his hurt, Matt asks if that’s really the best idea, but Evelyn is adamant. Hearing her resolve Matt agrees to help her. Clearly unhappy with her decision Matt rants to Roo the next morning about Evelyn’s wish. He thinks seeing him will only stir up unnecessary feelings for her, especially when she deserves better. His tirade is cut short by a phone call from Kat, who tells him something he doesn’t wish Evelyn to know. Evelyn’s a nervous wreck in the face of visiting Josh in prison, but Matt has come bearing bad news. He tells Evelyn that Josh has specifically asked not to see them. Evelyn doesn’t understand why, and assumes they’ve gotten the wrong message, but Matt is adamant; Josh won’t see her. Upset by this, Evelyn finds Zac, and tells him that Josh doesn’t want to see her. She insists she loves him as much as ever, but Zac questions whether Josh feels the same. Convinced by the drawing of her she found at Josh’s hideout, Evelyn is sure he does and asks Zac if he can find out why Josh is being so evasive.

Zac meets up with Evelyn later, having spoken to his contacts at the prison. He tells her maybe it’s best to just forget about him because he’ll be away for such a long time. Evelyn can’t, and demands to know what Josh said.Devastated over what Zac’s told her, Evelyn barges into the Pier Apartment livid at Matt who knew all along the reason he didn’t want to see her was that he had a new girlfriend. She’s furious he didn’t tell her, and when he argues that he was just trying to protect her, she tells him it wasn’t his decision to make. Distraught and betrayed Evelyn tells him to leave her alone. Evelyn returns home still reeling from what she’s found out about Josh. She empties her bag, tears up Josh’s drawing and removes his ring. Overwhelmed by disappointment and loss she tears the room apart in frustration.

Ash is working in the garage when VJ comes to visit. He wants to discuss the other night, and reaffirm his intention to stand by Billie despite not being the baby’s father. Ash tells him he doesn’t need to, that VJ’s just a kid, and he can look after his sister and the baby. VJs adamant; he’s stood by her this whole time, but Ash isn’t convinced he’ll stick around if it gets harder down the track. Hurt by Ash’s lack of faith in him VJ passionately declares that he loves Billie and so does his family – he’s not going to let her down. Ash finds it hard to trust him, but VJ states that he doesn’t need his trust, he’s got Billie’s and as far as anyone’s concerned the baby is his.

Impressed by VJ’s resolve, Ash visits his sister. Billie assures him that everything will be ok. Ash questions whether she really has to lie to everyone, but Billie argues that she doesn’t want her daughter to grow up knowing the truth and living with that burden. She makes Ash promise he won’t tell anyone, but a run in with Zac who refers to Ash as family makes him uncomfortable about the ruse. Ash asks Billie if she’s positive she wants to go through with the charade, especially when they’re lying to VJ’s whole family but Billie is emphatic that VJ loves her. Ash is more concerned with how VJ’s family would react if they found out it was all a lie. Billie wants a family for her daughter and insists that they’d never find out from her or VJ. She eyes him carefully, concerned that he might tell them. Ash reassures her he wont, but he’s obviously struggling with this lie.

Olivia runs into Hunter on her way to see VJ at Summer Bay House. Hunter reacts poorly to her arrival assuming she’s there to see him. She assures him she’s not, but then goes on to ask what he thinks about why Billie ran off at the wedding. Still wounded from their breakup and frustrated that Olivia is behaving like nothing has happened, Hunter snaps at her saying she can’t have it both ways. Stung, Olivia leaves accusing him of being immature.
VJ pops into the Diner to see Olivia, who’s happiness at seeing him only slightly masks her concern. VJ tells her that everything between him and Billie is sorted but Olivia is sceptical and suspicious by the ease of their reconciliation. When VJ brings up Hunter, Olivia accuses him of being an immature child, who’s been horrible to her since they broke up. Feeling for Hunter, who’s clearly trying to deal with the breakup, VJ defends his friend by pointing out that she did break his heart and perhaps she’s pushing this friends thing far too soon. Chastised by VJs words Olivia retreats to the kitchen, knowing he’s right.

Alf and John are doing inventory for the Surf Club, but John’s having difficulty with his memory. As Alf continues to count it becomes clear that John is not feeling well, and he bends over to steady himself. Alf, spotting that John seems a bit off balance asks if he’s feeling ok, but his concern is harshly rebuffed by John who stalks off in anger. Having regrouped after lunch the pair begin arguing again after John snaps at Alf, who’s fed up with his foul mood. It’s now Alf’s turn to leave in anger. Now alone, having driven Alf away John’s clearly unwell again and collapses outside the surf club.
