Extended Summary

Matt’s beating himself up about forgetting Evelyn’s birthday, with Roo and Ellie wondering how he could have missed it. He decides he needs to do something to make up for it, and asks for their help. Roo and Ellie brainstorm but Matt isn’t happy with any of their suggestions. He says that it’s about Evelyn and Oscar… then suddenly gets an idea, as he stares at a star shaped ornament hanging in the window. He gets up and rushes out, leaving Roo and Ellie mystified.

Duncan and Tori are talking about what they’re going to do later. Duncan’s being quite suggestive, making it clear that he’d like to spend some alone time with her but Tori’s unsure – it’s been a long time since she’s been intimate with anyone. Duncan picks up her discomfort but she brushes him aside and they head to Duncan’s. Once there in the otherwise empty house, they kiss and Duncan suggests they go upstairs but as they head up, Tori can’t handle it and hurries back out. Duncan downloads to Roo who tells him to talk to Tori. Meanwhile Tori talks to a sympathetic Marilyn, telling her that she can’t get Nate out of her head, and that her last relationship was awful, he cheated on her and she was crushed. Marilyn reminds Tori that she’s allowed a bit of fun. Tori talks to Duncan later, apologising. She put pressure on herself, and hasn’t been with a guy for a long time. He tells her that they can wait, as long as it takes. He suggests that they catch the movie but she coyly says she has a better idea. They’re kissing as they enter a hotel room. Duncan checks that she’s sure? Tori says she is but then keeps finding excuses to stop. Duncan assures her that she doesn’t have to prove anything to him. They start kissing again, then a phone rings. Duncan gets a call from Alf in America – Caroline’s hurt.

An embarrassed Jeannie returns and apologises to Brody, after she rebuffed him. He says he’s not going to fire her over it but she decides to leave, thinking he’s really mad at her. Evelyn finds her upset and tries to talk her around, she thinks it can’t be that bad. When she hears that Brody tried to kiss Jeannie, Evelyn says her boss shouldn’t be hitting on her anyway. Jeannie is upset, she explains that she actually likes Brody but thought kissing him might jeopardise her job, then blurts that it was her one chance to be free, which leaves Evelyn curious. Evelyn goes and tells Brody that Jeannie actually likes him, then Brody and Mason ask all about her, which leads to Evelyn telling them that she doesn’t know Jeannie very well and that she’s a little strange. Evelyn says Jeannie has no phone, and she only attends some of Evelyn’s lectures, sometimes disappearing for extended periods of time. The only thing she can give him is the phone number of the youth centre that she volunteers at. As they talk, Matt rushes in, breathless and tells Evelyn to come with him. He takes her home, where he’s set up a picnic. Evelyn’s not interested though, she doesn’t want to celebrate. Matt protests that it’s all for him, and tries to persuade her to stay our for sunset but she’s determined to go inside and just watch the news, eat something normal – she wants to keep it low key.

Jeannie comes to meet Brody after he made some calls to find her, and tries to explain herself, saying she has a lot going on. Brody stops her, giving her a big box of strawberries and a note. She reads it and is surprised to realise that he wants her to come back to work for him. He’s partway through telling her that he won’t pull any more moves when she plants a kiss on his lips. He clarifies that she meant it, then goes to get them drinks. While he’s at the bar Jeannie gets a call. She lies to the caller, saying that she’s at uni.

Later on, after dark, Evelyn comes outside to find Matt still there, lying on the picnic blanket, staring upwards. She reluctantly joins him and he looks for something in the sky… Then points out a binary star – two stars which orbit each other. He tells Evelyn that he bought them for her: one for her and one for Oscar. Evelyn’s touched, and tears up, before wishing her twin a happy birthday. Matt and Evelyn lie side by side, hand in hand, silently gazing upwards at the stars.
