Josh has a plan to save his brother from jail. The gulf between John and Marilyn widens. Hunter immediately finds himself offside with his Community Service supervisor.
Extended Summary
Matt chases after Josh, hoping to convince him not to just run off and leave Evelyn after biting her head off the way he did. Josh, however, is overwrought with guilt – about everything – and needs to be by himself. Mason, meanwhile, tries to offer comfort to Evelyn, but inadvertently fuels her growing sense of the inevitable. She tries to explain why Josh is so angry without revealing anything, but only grows frustrated when Mason isn’t getting it.
Hunter arrives for his first day of community service and immediately gets off on the wrong foot with Danika, the very hard line supervisor, who’s determined to whip her wayward teenage crew into shape. As Hunter and the other teens get to work picking up rubbish, it looks like it’s going to be a very long, hot day…
Leah and Zac arrive to help John prepare a surprise lunch for Marilyn. John admits that Marilyn’s homecoming hasn’t been as seamless as he would’ve hoped. It feels like they’re both in a “readjustment” period that he certainly wasn’t expecting.
Marilyn, meanwhile, visits Irene, wanting to know how she’s coping after her kidnapping ordeal. Irene is adamant she doesn’t want to talk about her experience, and by way of deflection, is determined to concentrate on Marilyn and her travel stories. Irene takes Marilyn home for the surprise lunch, and Marilyn’s overwhelmed to see all the trouble John’s gone to.
Hunter, meanwhile, gets himself further offside with Danika, when he shows concern for Jordan, one of his fellow Community Service comrades, who’s not holding up too well in the hot weather. When Hunter voices his concerns to Danika, she shows little regard for Jordan’s wellbeing.
Evelyn and Josh meet up – and both of them know the writing’s on the wall. What they had is gone now. They take a walk together fearing the future. She’s sorry she made him lie for her to the police. He’s sorry too, he knows Evelyn will never be able to look at him the same again – he’ll always be someone that killed somebody. But Josh doesn’t want to leave her alone. Together they wonder what other choice there is…
Marilyn’s lunch is going swimmingly, until she announces that she’s called DOCs, and asked them to put her and John back on the waiting list to become foster parents. John’s taken aback, and suddenly an awkward silence descends… John wishes Marilyn had talked to him about this first, and Marilyn’s surprised. They were so gung ho about this before she left? She didn’t realise John’s feelings had changed… John later admits how much failing with Skye hurt him. Marilyn works to convince him that Skye wasn’t a failure. He helped that girl, even if he doesn’t realise it yet. John remains unsure if he has it in him to try again.
Roo, Irene and Leah quickly bid their farewells, eager to leave Marilyn and John alone, to talk through their differences. Leah walks Irene home, and checks in on how she’s coping. Irene assures Leah she’s fine. When Leah leaves, however, Irene obsessively checks the door is locked… And it’s obvious she’s not coping nearly as well as she’s trying to make out…
Zac, meanwhile, arrives to pick up Hunter, just as Jordan passes out from heat exhaustion. Zac offers to take Jordan to a doctor, and now he’s the one who’s in Danika’s bad books as she castigates him for interfering. Zac’s none too impressed by this woman and her hardline attitude.
Matt confronts Mason on his sombre mood, clearly down about his relationship status. Evelyn enters, devastated – her and Josh are over. Matt takes her home where she collapses in Leah’s arms … She can’t believe she and Josh are over…
Josh arrives to see Andy, begging him to back him up if he confesses to Charlotte’s murder. Andy refuses. There’s no way he’s letting his little brother go to jail, even though he’s guilty.
Josh now marches up to Sergeant McCarthy, producing his phone. Josh says he’s just recorded a conversation with Andy that proves Josh is Charlotte’s killer!
