Extended Summary

At the diner Roo expresses her worries about going on a date to Irene, Marilyn and John. They chat about how things have changed on the dating scene and Marilyn reads advice out from a magazine. Roo laughs it off at first but then really starts to listen.

Zac meets with the loan representative at Angelo’s who is positive that he’ll get the loan, but Zac has a lot riding on him getting the role of Principal. She tells him that she’ll have an answer for him soon and leaves. Charlotte has seen them and asks what Zac’s doing. He lies but she sees the business card from the loan company. Charlotte thinks it’s a bad idea but Zac tells her he needs it and asks her to keep the whole thing to herself.

Roo’s nervously getting ready for her date with Leah and Alf encouraging her. Zac slips in during the cheerful conversation and mutters that he went for a walk. When James knocks on the door Roo lights up but Alf’s there in a flash, telling James that Roo has to be home by ten and that he remembers James as a little ratbag… Then he cracks a smile and says he’s joking. Roo hustles James out and Leah chides Alf who retorts he was getting Roo back for all the times she wasn’t back by ten. James and Roo have dinner but it goes terribly, with Roo trying to use the advice from the magazine and stumbling awkwardly through conversation.

Josh is trying really hard to study while Evie, Maddy and Matt mess around and play music. They turn it up and Josh cracks, turning the music off and shouting for them to get out before disappearing out of the room. Maddy and Matt leave but Evie hangs back, stunned. When Josh comes back in and apologises Evie tells him that it’s not worth getting this stressed over and that he needs to get it together. Evie leaves and Josh grabs an energy drink, sitting back down to study.

Irene and Marilyn try to get into Angelo’s to help Roo on her disastrous date but John bars their way. Meanwhile upstairs the date is still going badly, with Roo babbling. Eventually Irene and Marilyn fool John and rush upstairs and we see them sit at the bar behind Roo and James, trying to be discreet. Roo almost accepts some of James’ dessert them remembers the advice from the magazine and says no. James tries to hide his hurt at being rejected and there’s yet another awkward moment. He tells Roo that he has a lecture to prepare and leaving some money, he gives Roo a quick peck of a kiss and gets out of there at speed, leaving Roo gutted.

It’s early morning and an exhausted Josh is still up trying to study. He knocks his drink over his laptop and tries to mop it up in a panic. When he tries to restart the computer nothing happens and he loses it, hitting the laptop in pure frustration.

Irene and Marilyn go to see Roo who tells them how awful the date was. She’s mad at them for giving her terrible advice and mad at herself for taking it.

Evie speaks to Maddy on her way out to see Josh. Maddy warns Evie to watch Josh, he’s gone crazy at exam time before. Evie arrives to find Josh desperately tired, trying to fix the ruined laptop. Josh doesn’t believe in himself and thinks that no-one else does either. Evie tries to convince him that he can pass the exams, that he already knows what he needs to after all his hard work. Josh seems to relent and tells Evie that he will calm down and sort himself out.

An enthusiastic Irene and Marilyn lead James towards Roo who is staring morosely out to sea. Roo is embarrassed and upset that they interfered again but Irene and Marilyn back off and James tells Roo that her friends explained what happened and they both say how nervous they were and as they reconcile James kisses Roo, who kisses him back. Irene and Marilyn are thrilled.

Zac gets the loan and goes straight down to the diner to find Leah, who has been talking to Irene and Marilyn about finding a buyer. Zac tells them that he’s inherited some money from his godfather but Charlotte has overheard it all and knows that Zac’s lying.

Matt and Maddy are mucking up in the surf club when Evie walks in, she tells them that she thinks they’ll have the old John back in no time. What they don’t know is that Josh is out buying a little something to help him study…
