Extended Summary
Ash and Kat arrive back at the farm house. Kat asks if Ash is ready to talk. Ash says he has nothing to say: He has a lot of questions about why Luke did it but can only conclude he’s an idiot. Kat reminds him that Brax faked his death and suggests Patrick might have a good reason too. She says she’ll support Ash but needs to look into it officially. Ash says as far as he’s concerned they can throw the book at Luke. Meanwhile, Leah arrives home and she and Alf agree it’s been a hard day. Alf mentions having to tell John what the surf club decided, saying it felt like kicking a man when he’s ill. He also tells her about VJ being in a state and yelling at Luc; Luc dropped off soon after and VJ went upstairs to rest. Alf says VJ knows it was wrong but might still do it again.
Marilyn is fussing around John at the hospital but he is barely paying attention, not even reacting when she describes one of his shirts as pink, something he usually objects to. She says she’s going to spoil him when he gets home and things will get better. Soon after, Marilyn is welcoming John home, but almost straightaway someone throws a brick through the window. Marilyn tries to hide the note wrapped round it from John but he insists on reading it. It says “Burn in hell Monster.”
VJ comes downstairs and admits to Leah that he only had a short sleep before Luc woke up hungry. Leah says this is why she wanted to help him. VJ insists he can handle it but Leah disagrees and says everyone has to accept help and it doesn’t make him a bad parent. VJ says Billie wanted him to look after Luc. Meanwhile, Marilyn is on the phone, arranging for someone to come and fix the window. She tells John that not everyone feels like that and the fires weren’t his fault. John however thinks he deserves more than a brick. Marilyn decides they should go for a walk; John is reluctant but Marilyn reminds him the doctor said he needed to keep moving as part of his recovery.
Ash arrives back at his caravan and finds Patrick waiting inside. He tries to tell him to leave then, when he doesn’t shift, leaves himself. Patrick follows, insisting they need to talk. Ash pins him against the van, telling him to save it. Later, Ash is calmer but no more forgiving. Patrick says he came back from his last tour depressed: He saw a doctor but the only way to get past what he saw and did was to become someone else. The other members of his unit helped but his family needed to think he was dead. He says he kept tabs on them which is how he knew about Luc and Billie. Ash is unimpressed and tells him to stay away.
Leah is showing Luc photographs. VJ joins them and apologises for before. Irene turns up and VJ thinks Leah called her but they remind him they arranged for Irene to have Luc. VJ thought that wasn’t starting until next week. Irene happily takes Luc in a pram she’s brought round; VJ tries to give her advice but Leah points out Irene has looked after children before. VJ looks unhappy as Irene leaves. Later, Leah catches him cleaning and says he should be making the most of his freedom to surf or sleep or do school work. VJ says it’s not right that he’s palmed his kid off. Leah says no-one raises a child alone and it’s good that lots of people love Luc. VJ heads upstairs.
Kat goes to Patrick’s rental in uniform and in a police car. Patrick is surprised she’s a cop. Kat says she needs a statement about him faking his death. Patrick thinks that since no-one benefitted from his “death” there’s no crime but Kat says he wasted police resources with the search operation. Patrick protests that he came out of hiding to help Ash but Kat is still angry about what he did to Ash and says if he can’t properly explain he’ll go to jail. Later, Kat meets Ash on the headland and tells him about taking Patrick in. The DPP are looking at it but she thinks they’ll go easy on him. She is now more sympathetic, saying Patrick was depressed and she’s known people at the station with PTSD. He wouldn’t give details but just said he did something forgivable and couldn’t see any way out. She tells Ash she dropped him by the pier and suggests he go talk to him.
Ash watches Patrick from a distance. Irene comes along with Luc, telling her she’s her grandmother and is going to look after her, before introducing Ash. Despite Ash’s protests, she insists Luc understands everything. Ash seems to get an idea when she says Luc makes everything feel better and asks to borrow her for half an hour. Irene says she has to go get her nappy bag anyway. Ash takes Luc to Patrick, telling Luc to meet Luke, before correcting it to Uncle Paddy, which he dubs a stupid name. Patrick says she has Billie’s eyes and thanks Ash. Meanwhile, John and Marilyn arrive at the surf club. Marilyn says no-one’s noticed them but is proved wrong when a man and woman recognise John. The man calls out for him to take responsibility. John makes to approach them but Marilyn tells him not to. The woman calls him a coward and Marilyn has a go at them for attacking a man who’s unwell. She and John leave.
Irene collects Luc from Ash and Patrick. Patrick introduces himself as an old friend from back home. After Irene’s gone, Ash asks why he didn’t say he was his brother. Patrick avoids the question, thanking him for letting him see Luc, but Ash says he needs to decide whether he’s family or not. That evening, VJ asks Alf and Leah when Irene’s bringing Luc back. Leah says it’s soon and suggests having Luc in her room overnight. VJ agrees without argument, saying even though he feels guilty about it, he’s enjoyed having time to himself. He goes upstairs and Alf also exits, hoping the good mood lasts. Irene arrives back with Luc and mentions she had a long nap. Leah isn’t happy, since it means Luc won’t sleep at night, but Irene is dismissive, saying babies sleep a lot.
John and Marilyn are back home. Marilyn continues to be supportive but John says she shouldn’t have to stick up for him. He says she should be able to walk around safely in her home town, so he’s leaving her.
