Charlie took a step backwards when she saw who it was.

“What the hell do you want?” She asked

“I just want to talk” Dan replied. Not moving from the doorstep.

Charlie looked at him. “Talk”

“I wanted to say sorry”

Charlie looked at Dan. His eyes showed her that he was sorry. “Why are you sorry?”

Dan looked at Zach and Maddie. “The reason they were born on the side of the road. It was me”

Charlie looked confused. She moved position, blocking Dan’s view of her babies.

“I don’t want to hurt them. I just came here to say that I am sorry for everything that my family has put you through”

Charlie thought. Remembering how Dan was the only one who’d talk to her as a person. Warren beat her, Peter threw sexual innuendos at her, but Dan, he was different.

“Come in” Charlie said.

A small smile appeared over Dan’s face.

Angelo walked into his office. Sitting down he sighed as he looked at the papers on his desk.

Georgina knocked on the door.

“Hey” Angelo said as he looked up

“Hey yourself. How’s everyone”

“They’re good thank you. You’ll have to come round sometime” Angelo smiled

“Yea, I think I will. Anyway, reason why I’m here. Warren and Peter Tendril have been transferred to a different prison, and will re-start their sentences”

“Why’s that?”

“Warren hospitalized two inmates, and Peter assaulted a female worker. And a couple of weeks ago, they we heard by an officer who was off duty, that they’d get the family that put them away”

Angelo’s face filled with anger “Why wasn’t I told about this sooner?” “Charlie has only just had the babies. We thought you had enough to deal with”

“I can’t get my head around any of this” Ruby said as she threw her pen at the table.

“Want some ice cream?” Xavier asked as he stood up

“Yea, go on” Ruby smiled.

“Do you think you’d get one of those forms where you can have what’s gone on taken in to account?”

“What? You mean use what’s happened to mum to get a good result on the test?” Xavier nodded “No. I mean, even if I did, mum wouldn’t let me live it down”

Xavier sat down with the ice cream.

“Another dud” Miles said as he sat on the edge of the bath

“Miles, it takes time” Leah replied as she threw the pregnancy test in the bin.

“I know, I’m just excited” Miles said as he took Leah’s hand.

“Come one, I’ll make us some tea” Leah said as she stood up.

“We will keep trying, wont we?” Miles asked, looking like a little child as he gazed into Leah’s eyes.

“Yea, we will” Leah replied as she kissed Miles on the cheek.

“How’s Jack doing?” Rachel asked Tony as she saw Jack looking miserable.

“He’s ok, I guess. Well, he’s miserable, but I think that has more to do with the fact that Alex too his ticket too”

“What a bitch” Rachel replied.

“He’s going out to meet Lucas in England on Friday. That should cheer him up”

“Yea, it should. Speaking of Lucas. Is he ever going to come back?” Rachel asked

“I dunno. His writing has kicked off in England, they love everything he’s written”

“Aww, good. That’s all he ever wanted”

Tony smiled.

Jack finished off his bottle of beer. “I’ll see you later dad” Jack said as he walked up to Tony and gave him a hug.

“You going already?” Tony asked

“Yea, well, I’m going to go see Charlie, then I’m going”

“Take care of yourself son” Tony said

“I will” Jack replied

“See you soon” Rachel said as she gave Jack a hug.

Tony watched as Jack walked out of the house.

A tear rolled down his cheek.

Charlie sat beside Zach and Maddie, Dan sat at the other side of the room.

An uneasy silence fell between the two.

“How old?” Dan asked as he looked at the twins.

“Four months” Charlie repeated with a smile on her face

“I’m so happy for you Charlie, that’s all you ever wanted” Dan said

Charlie nodded her head in agreement.

“He f***ed his chances up with having this with you”

“Don’t mention his name” Charlie demanded

“I’m sorry. Look, I don’t have much time. After here I’m going to hand myself over to the police”

Charlie looked at him “Why?”

“I have a few convictions against me. And know I have one more”

“Like what?” Charlie asked

“About four months ago, I came here, with the intention of killing you. My brothers told me to do it. But you weren’t home. When I turned around they was a police car, and two people got out of the car. And that’s when I saw it. My chance to get away. So I ran to the car, and drove it away”

Charlie placed her hand over her chest

“I turned a corner but lost control, and hit a bus head-on”

Charlie breathed deeply as pain took over.

“When are we going to tell VJ?” Miles asked

“We should tell him before I get pregnant. That way he doesn’t have to rush his feelings” Leah replied.

“Yea, you’re right. Are we going to tell anyone else?”

“No, not until we’ve told VJ. I want him involved from the beginning”

Miles walked over to the couch. “You’re amazing, you know that?”

“I know” Leah smiled.

“Got an empty nest” Tony said as he looked at a photo of Jack, Lucas and himself.

Rachel hugged Tony from behind. “Not for much longer though” Rachel replied

“Yea. We really going to do this?” Tony smiled

“If you want to. You’ve got the kids, I’m happy with it just been us two” Rachel replied

“Yes” Tony smiled

“Yes” Rachel repeated

“Rach, I want a baby with you”

“Charlie? Oh my god, what’s wrong?” Dan asked as he saw Charlie clutch her chest.

Charlie pointed at the car.

“What? I don’t get what you mean!” Dan panicked

“Hospital” Charlie spoke. The action causing pain in her chest.

Right” Dan looked worried.

He saw the seats for the twins in the back of the car. Lifting them, e walked over to the car and put them in. Maddie murmured and Zach smiled at Dan.

Don’t smile at me, I don’t deserve it Dan thought to himself.

Dan walked back into the house. Charlie collapsed to the floor.

“S***!” Dan said.

Running over to Charlie he picked her up. And the mobile that was on the side.

Driving off, Dan tried desperately to get to the hospital.

Ruby got home.

“Mum” she shouted.

No answer.

Ruby made her way up the stairs. Again, no sign of anyone.

Ruby walked back down the stairs.

Seeing that the car had gone, Ruby panicked.

She took her mobile out of her pocket. Pressing the green button, she rang Charlie.

It went straight to answer phone.

“S***”

Ruby pressed green again, this time ringing Angelo.

“Angelo? Have you seen Mum?….She’s not here and the car has gone….ok, I’ll start looking” Ruby hung up. Walking out of the house, she headed to Noah’s.

Rachel walked along the corridor.

“Dr. Holden!” A nurse shouted

Rachel looked up to the nurse “Yes?”

“We need you”

Rachel followed the nurse.

Dan had Charlie in his arms.

“Who are you?” Rachel asked as Dan put Charlie down on the bed

“It doesn’t matter, look, get her sorted, one minute she was talking to me, and the next, she went down, clutching her chest” Dan said

“Right, you did the right thing brining her here. Where are Maddie and Zach?”

“In the car” Dan replied.

“Bring them in here, then ring Charlie’s fiancé and her daughter”

Rachel wheeled Charlie off.

“She has another daughter?” Dan thought to himself as he walked to the car.

“Have you seen mum?” Ruby asked Leah and Miles as she saw them

“No, we haven’t. what’s wrong?” Leah asked

“She’s not at home and neither are Zach and Maddie”

“Have you called Angelo?” Miles asked

“Yea, he’s looking as well” Ruby replied.

“Right, come on, well help look” Leah said as she stood up

Dan put the mobile to his ear.

Ruby took her phone out of her pocket. She saw ‘Charlie ringing’

“Hello? Mum”

“ITs not Charlie, its dan. Charlie is at the hospital”

“What? What have you done to her?” Ruby screamed

“I haven’t done anything”

“Whatever” Ruby hung up.

“What?” Leah asked

“Mum, she’s at the hospital” Ruby replied.

Angelo received a text.

Angelo, mum is at the hospital, some guy called Dan rung me.

I don’t know who he is.

Miles and Leah are taking me to the hospital.

Can you meet us there.

Ruby

Angelo ran to his car.

Driving as fast as he could, he headed for the hospital.

Three hours later…..

Ruby and Leah were cradling the twins.

Angelo was pacing and Miles looked at Leah as she cared for Maddie.

Rachel came out of the room.

“Is she ok?” Angelo asked.

Ruby looked at Rachel with teary eyes.

“Charlie has suffered a major heart attack.”

Ruby cried out. Angelo fought his tears.

“What caused it?” Angelo asked

“A small fragment from the bullet. It was able to block some blood flow, which caused a small amount of stress on Charlie’s heart, causing it to stop beating”

“Is she going to be ok?” Angelo asked.

“She’s still in surgery. We’ve had to deflate her left lung, and we’re having to repair some of the scar tissue. At this moment in time its touch and go”

“What are her chances?” Angelo asked.

Hearing those words caused Ruby to turn her back.

“If we came remove the fragment, and repair some of the damage, then she will be ok, however if we can’t get the fragment out, then I’m afraid it will kill her”

A tear fell down Rachel cheek as she spoke the last words.

Silence fell over the small group.

Angelo and Ruby’s cries filled the corridors.

Miles offered support for Angelo. Angelo walked away from Miles.

He stood outside the door of the operating theatre.

Dan stood at the corner, hearing the cries of the Angelo and Ruby.

Hatred filled his body. He hated his brothers for what they had done.

Trying to do the right thing. Dan walked out of the hospital, and made his way to the police station.

Chapter 84

“I’d like to speak to the person in charge please” Dan said as he walked up to the desk.

“And you are?” Georgina asked

“Daniel Tendril. I’m the man who caused the accident on November 21st”

Georgina looked slowly up at him. “You’re handing yourself in?”

“Yes, I don’t care what I’m charged with”

“What the sudden change?” Georgina asked as she cuffed Dan

“I talked with Charlie and realised she was the only good thing in my life, and seeing what my brothers put her through, made me re-evaluate my life. I don’t deserve to walk free” Dan held his head low.

“Dan Tendril, I am arresting you for the manslaughter of Kenneth Jones, possession of a fire arm without a licence, resisting arrest, theft”

Dan nodded his head. But a warm feeling went through his body when he realised, Charlie was safe. Nothing else bad would happen to her. She didn’t have to worry about any of the Tendril brothers ever again.

After what seemed eleven hours, a doctor finally came to see Angelo and the group.

“What’s the news?” Angelo asked, trying not to wake Ruby, Zach and Maddie

“The operation was a success. We have removed the fragment, and repaired the damage. At this stage she still needs close watch, but I am confident that she will make a full recovery” the doctor smiled.

Angelo hugged the doctor out of sheer delight. “Thank you” He joyfully spoke.

“Can we see her?” Angelo asked

“Yes” The doctor replied.

Angelo walked over to Ruby, gently tapping her shoulder to wake her up.

Ruby groaned and hit Angelo over the head as she turned the other way.

Miles laughed as he saw Angelo’s reaction.

“Shut up” Angelo said

Miles continued to laugh. His belly causing Leah to bob up and down as he laughed.

The following day.

Charlie sat up in bed.

Looking out of the window in her room, she remember what her relationship with Daniel Tendril was like.

“Hey” Dan said as he walked in the room

Charlie looked up at him, sheer relief swept over her face. “Hey”

“What you doing on the floor?” Dan asked

Charlie looked at herself. She had a mark on her wrist, and a cut along her fore arm. “I dropped a $10 note, so I’m looking for it” Charlie rose to her feet, hiding her arm out of Dan’s sight.

“Where’s Warren?” Dan asked as he sat down

Charlie’ shook with fear as she heard his name mentioned. “He’s out, at the pub” Charlie replied. Repulsed by what she had said.

“I was thinking. I need a woman’s perspective on painting my flat, I’m hoping when Jen sees the flat, she’ll realise I’m not a pig, and maybe she’ll move in with me. So I kind of need your help. Would you help me?”

Charlie looked at Dan. His bottom lip came out.

“Yes, I’ll help” Charlie said. It was a way for her to get out of the house.

“He was a friend” Charlie said to herself.

Angelo knocked on the door. “Hey”

Charlie looked and smiled “Hey”

“These are for you” Angelo handed Charlie a bouquet of flowers.

“Angelo, they’re gorgeous” Charlie said as she smelled them.

“Just like you” Angelo said.

Charlie smiled.

“How’s Charlie?” Leah asked as she served Ruby her chocolate milkshake

“She’s doing good, she can come home tomorrow” Ruby smiled.

“Good. I don’t think she can go through anymore”

“Mum is strong. She can get through anything” Ruby smiled.

“Yea, she can. Anyway, tell her I’ll see her soon” Leah said

“Will do. Bye” Ruby replied as she walked out of the diner.

Three years later…..

“You may now, kiss the bride” The vicar said.

The groom smiled. Lifting the veil off his wife’s face, he smiled as he looked into her eyes. Leaning in, he kissed her.

The guests all smiled as they saw the couple.

Ross sobbed as he stood watching his daughter pull away from Angelo.

Charlie and Angelo walked back down the aisle with everyone following, confetti and rice fell over them as people threw it.

“Can I have your attention please” Miles said as he tapped his glass.

“Mummy” Maddie said as she tapped Charlie

Ruby took Maddie “Shhh” she whispered softly in Maddie’s ear.

The guests laughed

“Firstly, I’d just like to say, it’s a good job I’m married mate otherwise Charlie would be over here” Miles said, causing the guests to laugh.

“No, on a serious note. Angelo, Charlie, you two have always meant to be together, that goes without saying. You’ve been to hell and back, but you’ve come back with more love for each other, then anyone ever thought was possible. And I think both Tony and I can say, that us three men are the luckiest three on the planet. Charlie, you look gorgeous, glowing, in fact. Angelo, I’m so happy for you mate” Miles held up his glass. “To Angelo and Charlie, a fire that will always burn strong”

“Charlie and Angelo” The guests said.

“Now I think I’ll go see where I left my testosterone” Miles said as he sat down.

As the guests danced, the children fell asleep, and Miles, Tony and Angelo had a drinking game. Leah, Rachel and Charlie sat talking.

“I can’t believe it took you four years” Leah said as she looked at Charlie wedding ring.

“I know, god, four years” Charlie said.

“We’re so lucky aren’t we? I mean, after, Paul, Ian and Warren look where we are now. We’re all married, and one of us has kids” Leah said

“I know, we’ve come so far. I never thought any of this could happen” Rachel added.

“The one thing we have all gained? The ability to trust again” Charlie added

“To trust again” Leah repeated

“To trust again” Rachel repeated

“Champagne?” Asked a waiter

“No thanks”

“None for me”

“I’m good thank you”

The women all looked at each other.

“Leah?”

“Rachel?”

“Charlie?”

Silence fell between the three of them. Smiles crept over their faces.

“I’m pregnant!” They all said at once.
