Opening doors to set the scene

Daily Telegraph

NIDA

Kensington

Open Day

Nicholas Bishop isn't here to sugarcoat the truth. It's tough out there as an actor. What with TV's reliance on reality shows and a dearth of film work, being a budding thesp in Australia is nice work, if you can get it.

"You have to remain optimistic, even when you look at the number of unemployed actors," says Bishop, who has had a semi-regular gig on Home And Away.

"You have to be passionate about [acting] to have some sense of longevity."

Bishop is a product of NIDA. And tomorrow, the famed school is throwing its doors open to the public. He says: "It's essential to train somewhere. With the industry the way it is, you have to be versatile, be able to do film, TV, radio, theatre, musical theatre."

At the open day, prospective students, their families and anyone interested can see what goes on at the alma mater of Gibson, Blanchett et al.

* Opposite UNSW, 215 Anzac Pde, tomorrow, from 10am. www.nida.edu.au
