Logies at last for John and Kate

Daily Telegraph

8 May 2006

SENTIMENT ruled the 2006 TV Week Logie Awards last night as Blue Heelers star John Wood and Home and Away's Kate Ritchie won the Silver Logies for Most Popular Actors.

Both wins were well received by TV's brightest stars at a chilly Melbourne ceremony over which Richard Carleton's sudden death cast a pall.

For Ritchie, it was not only her first Logie win but her first nomination. Wood's win was bittersweet for an actor who feels Blue Heelers has been mistreated by Seven as the series approaches its end and holds an Australian TV record for a weekly drama of 510 episodes.

Home and Away was the night's most successful program, winning four audience-voted categories, including Most Popular Australian Drama.

Foxtel's drama Love My Way continued its run of acclaim, winning the industry-judged awards for Drama Series (for the second consecutive year), Outstanding Actor (Dan Wyllie) and Outstanding Actress (Claudia Karvan).

Foxtel last night announced it had commissioned a third series of the adult drama.

Sydney comedian Chris Lilley won two peer-judged awards for his ABC series We Can Be Heroes, including the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Outstanding New Talent.

Before the Gold Logie announcement, Seven led the night with six wins, from the ABC's five.

Ritchie picked up her first ever TV Week Logie Award tonight, from her first nomination, after almost 20 years on the popular Seven Network soap Home And Away.

She won Silver for most popular actress, and Home And Away also secured the Silver Logie for most popular Australian drama, beating Blue Heelers, McLeod's Daughters and Neighbours.

Ritchie's castmates Jodi Gordon and Paul O'Brien also picked up awards, for most popular new female and male talent.
