Birdcage aflutter

Daily Telegraph

October 29, 2005

THE nation is pinning its hopes on champion mare Makybe Diva to win a third Melbourne Cup on Tuesday and today also promises to be all about the girls at Flemington.

A bevy of international stars are in Melbourne for Derby Day and with names like Eva Longoria, Kelly Clarkson and Chloe Sevigny on the guest list, there promises to be plenty of heads turning in the Birdcage and marquee area.

That's not to mention the who's who of high-profile Aussie women that will be on hand as the corporate giants show off their celebrity pulling power.

The likes of Erica Baxter, Kristy Hinze, Natalie Bassingthwaite and Holly Brisley are just a few who will be glamming it up trackside.

And as for what they and the thousands of other women at Flemington and Randwick will be wearing, it is set to be – as always – all about the frock, the hat and the heels, reports fashion writer Alicia Pyke.

Hatwise, big floppy straw numbers and chic feathered headpieces are likely to figure at Flemington and Randwick though many girls will be reluctant to give up their fascinators.

When choosing a frock, and inevitably it is a frock, those swayed by trends of the season will be wearing white, black, blue – especially navy – or vivid prints.

Those who insist on doing their own thing, could be wearing just about anything – tutus, ball gowns and hot pants included.

Racewear rarely pays much heed to fashion dictates and that's exactly what makes the spring carnival such a spectacle.

Just spare a thought for guests in the Moet and Chandon marquee where the waiters are guaranteed to be better dressed than most of the guests.

Those deemed slim enough will have been shoe-horned into nothing less than Dior Couture to perform their vital task of keeping flutes filled.
