Wimbledon mixed doubles heat up

By Fiona Connolly

YOU could almost fry an egg on the courts of Wimbledon yesterday, but the hottest competition was courtside with the battle of the tennis babes.

A sweltering day by British standards at 34C, Australia's best Wimbledon hopes Lleyton Hewitt and Mark Philippoussis prepared for day one of the Grand Slam tournament with their head cheerleaders close by their sides.

Hewitt, ranked No.2 in the world, had the full attention of his wife-to-be Bec Cartwright with the TV starlet now officially finished her Summer Bay duties.

Cartwright, who is four months pregnant, was dressed down in cargo pants and a singlet after rushing to be with Hewitt following shooting her final scenes for Home And Away on Friday night.

If there was any indication a courtside beauty battle was being played out, it was the Scud's fiancee, Alexis Barbara, 19, who appeared to be making the most effort.

Barbara, sporting a huge diamond ring to rival even Cartwright's whopping $200,000 rock, dressed up for the cameras in a lace-trimmed, micro-mini teamed with every tennis court essential, a pair of jewelled wedge heels.

Ranked at 101 and plagued by a year of injuries, Philippoussis could do with all the support he can get.

Cartwright was still sporting a bruised cheek after falling down a set of stairs while filming on Friday. She was rushed to a hospital in Wahroonga with a bloodied face and was said to be fearful for the baby, before being cleared to fly to London just hours later.

There is also a vote running to see who the public think is the best babe. The results so far have Alexis on 61% and Bec only on 39%.
