Kirsty sat on her bed waiting for Kane to come home. He was late again. She heard the bedroom door and turned towards him.

‘Where have you been Kane?’ She asked.

‘Out’ he replied.

‘Kane!’ She asked again ‘Where have you been?’

‘Just out okay!’ He replied again.

‘Kane, it’s the forth time this week that you’ve been late. What is going on?’ She asked sternly.

‘Nothing okay Kirst, I just wanted sometime alone, alright.’ Kane replied a little too harshly.

‘Kane’ Kirsty said cautiously sitting down next to him, ‘please tell me what’s going on!’

‘Baby it’s nothing, it just I wanted sometime to think.’

‘Think about what?’ Kirsty asked wanting to get further into his thoughts.

‘Family.’ Kane replied simply.

‘What about family?’

‘You, me, the baby.’ He shrugged.

‘It’s Louisa isn’t it?’

Kane nodded. He had only really spoken to the girl once yet she had had such a big affect on his life.

Kirsty sat on his lap and kissed his lips gently. ‘Don’t worry about anything, she’ll turn up sooner or later.’

Kane half smiled. ‘Why are you always so optimistic?’ He asked her.

‘Why are you always so pessimistic?’ She asked in response.

He laughed.

‘Why do you look at me like that?’ Kirsty asked quietly.

‘I was just wondering how one woman could make me feel so happy?’ He replied.

‘I was just wondering how one woman could make you so sad!’

‘You don’t make me sad, Kirsty!’

‘Not me Kane, Louisa!’

‘Oh, that’s what family does I guess.’

She had watched them all enter the diner. It was the first day back at school after the holidays. She had waited before she was sure that the diner was almost empty before entering. The Greek looking lady was working in the Kitchen again, but this time there was an older looking man behind the counter.

‘What can I get for you?’ He asked in an upbeat voice.

‘Can I grab an O.J. please?’ She asked.

‘Sure! Sit down and I’ll bring it straight over!’

She sat in the bay that she had sat in before. She did not recognise any of the faces that were sitting around her. She sat with her back to the door so to hide her face.

‘Here you go love!’ The man said placing the drink down in front of her.

‘Thanks.’ She said simply in reply.

She sat for hours just watching people come and go. She eventually heard a voice behind her that she recognised.

‘Late again Irene!’

‘Sorry Alf, Kirsty wasn’t feeling well.’

‘No worries. It’s been quiet anyway!’

‘Thanks Alf!’

‘You know I haven’t seen much of young Tasha around recently!’

‘Yeah, she’s just had to work something’s through, that’s all.’

‘I hope her and young Robbie aren’t on the rocks.’

‘No, no nothing like that!’ came the reply. ‘You get off on your fishing trip, I’m sure we can manage here!’

‘Thanks Irene!’

‘See ya Alf.’ She said waving him out of the door.

She started to clean off the tables when she heard someone say her name. She looked around but couldn’t see where it had come from.

‘Irene!’ She heard again.

Irene headed over to the table that she believed the noise was coming from.

‘Can I help you?’ She asked.

The person looked up and pulled back their hood.

‘God, Girrly!’ Irene said with surprise, ‘You almost gave me a heart attack!’

‘Sorry!’ she said apologetically.

‘What are you doing here?’ Irene asked sliding herself into the bay opposite her.

‘I just wanted to see how everyone was doing!’

‘Louisa!’ She said sternly. ‘You can’t keep coming and going like this! Tasha’s been so mixed up since she last saw you. So has Kane for that matter, not that he would like to admit it!’

Louisa looked away ashamed.

‘So, how long are you going to be with us?’ Irene asked, trying to sound a little more upbeat.

Louisa shrugged. ‘I don’t want to go home!’ she said as tear fell down her cheek.

‘Come on lovie, it can’t be that bad!’

‘How would you know?’

‘I’ve seen a lot of kids in my time, and a lot of the time life isn’t as hard as they like to make out!’

‘Maybe it’s not. Every girl I’ve met seems to have this dream of living in a huge house with maids and butlers, and being sent to the poshest schools and riding around on horse back and meet princes and knights, but fairy tales don’t really exist do they!’

‘They do exist, darl, you just got to find them. You know there’s always a bed at my place if you need it.’

‘Thanks Irene but I think I’ve caused enough trouble don’t you.’

Louisa pulled her hood up once more and walked out.

Irene had not told anyone that she had seen Louisa again.

It had gone 2. The house was dark and still as the inhabitants slept. The door began to creek open.

‘Kane?’ Kirsty asked worriedly.

‘Stay here, babe, I’ll go and have a look.’ Kane said, wanting to protect his young wife and his unborn baby.

He grabbed the first thing he found off the dresser and crept into the lounge. He suddenly switched the light on and came face to face with the intruder.

‘What were you planning to do, attack me with the hair dryer?’ The intruder asked.

Kane looked at his hand still poised in the air. He dropped his hand.

‘Sorry. Kirsty just heard something…what are you doing back here?’

‘Why aren’t you glad to see me?’ Louisa asked.

‘Course I am.’ Kane replied, ‘Shame it had to be 2 o’clock in the morning though.’ He mumbled.

‘What’s going on down there!’ Irene called from upstairs. It was not, however, Irene that managed to make it down the stairs first but Tasha.

‘You came back!’ She scream excitedly.

‘Not so loud!’ Irene hissed, ‘You’ll wake Kirsty.’

‘I’m already wake.’ Kirsty mumbled making her way from the bedroom door towards Kane.

‘Irene, can she stay?’ Tasha asked hopefully.

‘Course she can! What do you think I’m going to do, chuck her out?!’

‘Thanks Irene!’ Tasha glowed.

‘No get to bed, all of you!’ Irene commanded.

‘Thanks for letting me stay, Irene.’ Louisa said addressing Irene for the first time.

‘My pleasure love. Fancy some cocoa you must be frozen!’

‘Yes please.’ Louisa replied eagerly.

Louisa and Irene sat down at the table.

‘You planning on staying long?’ Irene asked.

‘Don’t know, maybe forever, I haven’t decided. It looks a nice place round here. I might by my own flat, I don’t know.’

‘You can’t by your own flat, you’re what, 14?’

‘15’ Louisa replied slightly offended. ‘Look, I have my own money, so why shouldn’t I buy my own place?’

‘Look Lovey, it may seem easy running a house, but think you’ll have school and stuff and you don’t want to have to stay home to clean the house when you could be going out.’

‘I guess not’ Louisa shrugged.

Look if you’re planning on staying, then you can decorate the your room or whatever!’

‘Thanks!’

‘On one condition!’ Irene said sternly.

‘Yeah, what is it?’ Louisa asked in a carefree way.

‘You enrol at Summer Bay High!’

‘What! I get here and people already want to send me off to school!’

‘You have to learn, darl. Anyway Tasha and Robbie go there, and the twins, Matilda and Henry, Robbie’s brother and sister, go there, the’ll be in your year I expect. They all love it there.’

‘Do I have a choice?’

‘Not really!’ Irene said, shaking her head.

‘Okay then!’

‘No get to bed kiddo, first one on the right!’

Louisa smiled as she climbed the stairs.

*Knock**Knock*

‘Louisa love, you better get up if you want a shower!’

‘Do I have to?’ She ask rolling over and pulling the covers further over her head.

‘Come on! Get up! That is, if you don’t want to go to school dirty!’

Louisa rolled out of bed, pulled a comb through her hair and open the door.

‘Ah good you’re up. You might want to jump in the shower before Kirsty gets up, you never know how long she’s goin’ to spend in there.’ Irene said a little too cheerful for that time in the morning.

Louisa pulled herself into the bathroom. She took a shower and made herself look reasonably respectable. She took out the last of the clean clothes that she had in her bag and put them on.

She came downstairs to find the whole of the household around the table.

‘Nice for you to join us!’ Irene said slightly sarcastically.

Louisa sat in the only free chair between Tasha and Kane. She sat politely with her hand folded in her lap.

‘You can eat, you know!’ Tasha said.

‘I know but I don’t eat breakfast.’ Louisa replied.

‘How did you sleep last night?’ Kane asked

‘Not bad. Pity I was only allowed 4 hours sleep!’

‘Pity you woke us up 2 in the morning!’

‘That wasn’t my fault, I really didn’t want to sleep on the door step in this weather! Do you know what it does to your hair?’

‘Guys that’s enough!’ Irene said butting in. ‘Tasha, I can drop you and Robbie off at school, I’ve got to go down there anyway.’

‘Okay, thanks Irene!’ Tasha replied.

‘So what made you decide to come back?’ Kirsty asked

‘Well this is the only place I have family now so I may as well!’

‘What about your dad love?’ Irene asked cautiously

‘What about him?’ Louisa asked, obviously not wanting to talk about him.

‘He’s family!’

‘No he’s not, not really!’

‘Well I better be going!’ Kane said standing up

‘Can I come with you?’ Louisa asked hopefully.

‘I guess!’ Kane said, looking for confirmation from Irene.

‘Alright’ Irene said giving in. ‘But I want her at the school by 10, that when we have our meeting with Mr Hyde!’

‘Thanks Irene.’ Louisa called, following Kane out the door.

Kane and Louisa talked the whole way down to the wharf, having missed 15 years they had a lot to catch up on.

Louisa sat on the wharf and watch Kane work.

‘I hope you not corrupting another young mind, Kane Phillips!’ The little plump lady from the diner shouted.

‘And what do you mean by that?’ Kane asked obviously annoyed.

‘Oh nothing, nothing.’ She said waddling on.

‘So you just met Colleen.’ Kane said jokingly to Louisa.

‘Stay here.’ Louisa said to Kane as she got up.

‘Colleen!’ She called to the little old lady.

‘Yes!’ She said turning round.

‘What did you mean about Kane back there!’

‘Who want to know?’

‘His sister!’ Louisa said getting impatient.

‘Well, I’m not one to gossip, but you do know what he did to young Dani Sutherland don’t you!’

‘Who?’

‘Young Dani Sutherland, oh you must know young Kirsty?’

‘What’s she got to do with it?’

‘She’s her sister. She was such a nice girl, you know. Tore the family apart her marrying that scum.’

‘Colleen, you seem like a nice lady,’ Louisa started ‘but would you mind not talking about my brother like that!’

‘Er, yes sorry! He wouldn’t have told you though would he!’

‘Told me what Colleen. You may not know this but I’m on a tight schedule so if you would like to hurry up, that would be gratefully appreciated.’

‘Yes, well, he did the worst crime imaginable. He was luck Rhys didn’t kill him. He raped her you know!’

‘Thank you for informing me, Colleen.’ Louisa said turning back, believe that she was just a batty old lady.

‘You are never going to believe what she just told me!’ Louisa laughed when she got back to Kane.

‘No?’

‘She told me you raped Kirsty’s sister. I mean, how ridiculous!’

Kane looked at his feet.

‘Kane, please tell me she’s just a batty old lady!’

Kane didn’t speak.

‘Kane?’ Louisa perused

‘What do you want me to tell you Louisa? That I’m perfect, because I’m not! I’ve done some bad things, some things that can never be forgiven.’

‘You…disgust me!’ Louisa screamed at him running off.

It had come back to haunt him. However hard he tried to be forgiven, however sorry he was, it always came back to haunt him.

Louisa ran until she reached the school. By the time she reached Head’s office, she had composed herself. Irene was there waiting for her, when she arrived.

‘What time do you call this, Missy?’ Irene enquired

Louisa looked at her watch. ‘9.58 am’

‘Stop being a smarty, come on, get in Mr Hydes waitin’’

The office was small, not in a bad way it just made everything feel as though it was closing in on Louisa.

‘Hello Louisa, I’m Mr Hyde and I’d like to welcome you to Summer Bay High!’

‘Thank you!’ Louisa replied politely.

‘Now if you would like to tell me you details. Full name?’

‘Louisa Marie Willgrass.’

‘Date of birth’

‘24th April 1990’

‘Parents names’

‘Biological or otherwise?’ Louisa asked as a genuine question.

‘Who ever you grew up with?’ Mr Hyde replied unsure.

‘Lord and Lady Ivor of Elvedon’

‘So do you want to tell me a bit about yourself?’

‘I’m a proper English Lady so expect to be treated like one!’ Louisa started. ‘I speak six languages, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian and Latin. I’m living at Irene’s’ Louisa stopped for breath.

‘Thank you for that..er…informing information!’ Mr Hyde said not wanting to here anymore. ‘Now, I have discussed this with Irene and we think it would be best if you started as soon as possible, today in fact!’

‘Today! You think I have nothing else to do with my life apart from come to school.’

‘Love, you’ve already missed 2 weeks,’ Irene reminded her.

‘So that’s settled then!’ Mr Hyde informed them. ‘I’ll get someone to show you around for the first few days and then I think you’ll be away!’

‘I want Tasha to show me around!’ Louisa said speaking up suddenly.

‘Love, she’s not in your year!’ Irene said, not wanting to get Louisa angry.

‘I don’t care, I want to be with Tasha!’

Irene looked at Me Hyde for help.

‘I’ll tell you what, I will allow Tasha Andrews out of lessons a few minutes early to come and pick you up and escort you around the school.â€

Louisa shrugged.

Irene, Louisa and Mr Hyde walked down the corridor in silence. The door that they were led to was door M04. Mr Hyde pushed open the door. A young female teacher, with long dark hair, was writing on the board.

‘Ah, Ms Fletcher, this is Louisa Willgrass she is starting with us today, she doesn’t have a timetable yet so if you could select someone to look after her for today, I would be grateful.’

Irene and Mr Hyde left her standing there with 27 pairs of eyes fixated on her.

‘Hi I’m Ms Fletcher. Do you want to tell the class something about yourself?’

‘Ok then. Well my name is Louisa Willgrass. I just moved here from England. I don’t really know what to say! Any questions?’ She asked hoping that there wasn’t.

Half a dozen hands shot up. Ms. Fletcher started picking people.

‘Um Matilda!’

‘Is England just full of rich, posh people?’

‘No. I lived in Norfolk which has a great range of people, put in my social class I guess we would be class as rich and posh as you put it, given that I am a lady and I mix with other ladies, lords, dukes, duchesses, princes, princesses, well you get the idea.’

‘Henry!’

‘Did you play a gig in Sydney recently or was that some other England chick?’

‘No, that was me! How did you know about that?’

‘My older brother Robbie went.’

‘Ah so you must be Master Hunter then?’

‘I’m his sister too!’ Matilda said, wanting some attention.

‘Indeed! What did he think of the show?’ She said turning her attention back to Henry.

‘Yer, he thought it was good.’ Henry Shrugged

‘Perhaps you would like to sit in the spare seat between Henry and Matilda?’ Ms Fletcher said, wanting to get back to her lesson

‘Alright.’ Louisa said making her way to the chair.

Ms Fletcher was going on about Weimar Germany and Hitler’s over taking of power.

Henry nudge Louisa and passed her a piece of paper.

‘Hey I’m Brooke, I’m top dog around here, perhaps you’d like to hang out sometime.’

Louisa looked over in the direction of where the piece of paper had come from. The girl to the left and slightly in front of her turns around and smiled at her. She nodded in recognition.

A few seconds later Tasha knocked on the door and entered to room.

‘Um Hey Ms. Fletcher I’m supposed to take Louisa now!’

‘Alright Louisa?’

Louisa stood up and followed Tasha out.

‘I am so bored! And I’ve only had half a lesson!’

‘You should get used to it!’ Tasha said laughing.

‘Robbie’s brothers rather cute, isn’t he!’

‘Who Henry?’

‘Yer, shame about his sister though!’

‘Matilda. What’s wrong with her?’

‘She’s so stuck up, she was all like are English people snobby!’

‘Oh’

‘Look I can’t be bothered with school, you fancy bunkin’ off?’

‘Louisa you can’t do that, Irene’ll kill you!’

‘She doesn’t have to know!’

‘I don’t know?’

‘Ah come on Tasha where’s your sense of adventure?’

‘Alright but this is your fault.’ She said as they ducked past Mr Hydes office.

Louisa and Tasha walked down the beach kicking the sand with their feet.

‘Why didn’t you tell me about Kane?’ Louisa asked.

‘What about him?’ Tasha asked happily.

‘You know did, that he did what he did to Kirsty’s sister.’

‘Oh that was years ago! He’s different now.’

‘Whatever’ Louisa muttered spotting Kane coming towards them.

‘You alright, my favourite sister!’

‘What do you want?’ Louisa asked

‘Am I not allowed to say hi to my sisters?’

‘Firstly Tasha isn’t your sister and secondly, I don’t really want to be! I’m going to the diner!’

Louisa marched away towards the diner. As she walk in she saw Irene at the counter and tried to remain inconspicuous, but it didn’t work.

‘Oi, Missy!’ Irene called before Louisa could get away. ‘What are you doing bunkin’ school?’

‘Um it’s a free period.’

‘No it’s not, you don’t have you timetable yet so I spoke to Mr Hyde and he said that he’d give you a full day of lessons!’

‘Ok so I bunked, big deal!’

‘What’s goin’ on! You can’t bunk school yet, you only started 3 hours ago!’ Irene asked crossing her arms.

‘I was just bored!’

‘What else?’

‘It’s Kane.’ Louisa said sitting down. ‘How could you let him sleep under your roof. He’s disgusting, and your basically saying it was alright by letting him sleep in your house.’

‘He’s reformed.’ Irene told her as Colleen walked pasted with a huff. ‘Look, he’s really trying hard to be a loving husband to Kirsty, and so wants to be a good father to their baby, why can’t you just give them a change?’

‘Because he’s a rapist that’s why!’ Louisa said walking out.

***

Henry and Matilda were walking home when Robbie ran up behind them.

‘Hey guys, you seen Tasha around?’

‘No’ Matilda answered ‘She came to pick up Louisa from our lesson and since then, we haven’t seen her.’

‘She bunked off the last two lessons, Irene would kill her if she knew! I’m going to see if she’s at Irenes! Tell mum not to hold dinner for me!’ He said calling to the, running off.

‘So what did you think of her?’ Henry asked Matilda

‘She was so stuck up! Did you here her! She was all like I socialise with Princesses and Princes!’

Henry raised his eye brows.

***

Robbie arrived at Irene’s he found Tasha sitting with Louisa and Kirsty at the table.

‘So you still haven’t told me how far gone you are?’ Louisa asked

‘7 ½ months.’ Kirsty told her. ‘I’m so excited I cant wait!’

‘Tasha I’ve been looking for you every where!’

‘Oh me and Louisa bunked!’

‘You bunked’ Kirsty exclaimed. ‘Irene is going to kill you!’

‘She already knows!’ Louisa told her.

‘She knows! Was she angry? I’m I going to be grounded?’ Tasha started worrying, but Kane cut her off as he walked through the door.

‘Hey guys!’ He called out to them.

Louisa said nothing but left her seat and went to her bedroom.
